Rune Factory Developers Making A New Game For Nintendo 3DS

By Ishaan . February 7, 2014 . 4:13am

Marvelous AQL are teasing a new game for the Nintendo 3DS, which they say is from the developers of Rune Factory. Marvelous, as you know, publish the Rune Factory games.

A teaser website for the game states: “What have the developers of Rune Factory been up to lately? Making a new Rune Factory game? Or… something else, perhaps? The answer is coming soon…”

As of now, we’re unsure whether the message refers to staff within Marvelous AQL who have worked on the Rune Factory franchise, or whether it refers to members of the now-closed Neverland Co., which was the studio that Marvelous contracted to develop the Rune Factory series.

Neverland, as you may recall, filed for bankruptcy in December 2013, citing sluggish performance and deteriorating financial status.

Following news of Neverland’s bankruptcy, Rune Factory series producer Yoshifumi Hashimoto—an employee of Marvelous—stated: “As of now, it’ll still remain a secret as to what kind of title we’ll be releasing next, but I can say that the staff members are still doing great.”

Whatever it is, it’s gonna be some sort of kinky taboo.

  • Taedirk

“Neverland, as you may recall, filed for bankruptcy in December 2013, citing sluggish performance and deteriorating financial status.”

Meanwhile, XSEED announced yesterday that they were working hard to get more physical copies made due to RF4 selling beyond expectations.

  • RF5 I hope,oh and with no random events pls

  • Thatguy

So… it will be released in Japan and US, confirmed, that it will be in Europe and then canceled?

    • Thatguy

It seems, that even downvoter bot was sad, when RF4 was canceled in EU

    • mockturtle

I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many downvotes on one post…

      • Thatguy

Bah, you need to see article about Nintendo. 300 downvotes in 2 sec.
Well, it’s just a some glitch in disqus, when you can write a script, that will downvote people.

  • cloudcaelum

Whatever it is, don’t be hopeful EU…

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Dragons marked by Death something like that?

    • That game was announced a while back (2 years now ?), so I don’t think it’s this one.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

        T_T Another Vaporware i guess.

  • Lemski07

    Rune factory online? lol

  • Pegasusu Fantaji (Umar)

Another sad EU gamer over here

  • Nam

I really wonder what made them give up on releasing RF4 in Europe, even though they had announced that they were releasing it. Especially if they still have the original developers working with them.

The news of RF4 coming to Europe was the thing that finally had me decide to get an EU 3DS instead of importing an NA 3DS.

That really didn’t turn out alright. Not worth the money at all, what with none of the games coming to Europe and the machine being region locked. As things stand, I honestly kind of wonder why Nintendo are even selling 3DSs in Europe.

    • But but but… Bravely Default! We already have Bravely Default!

    • Herok♞

You know its a bit extreme to say that since one niche game got canceled, that Nintendo has no reason to bring the system out in Europe. After all its not like there aren’t games coming out in Europe first.

      • Nam

It’s not just this game though.

  • I hope some Neverland Staff is under a new developer at Marvelous. Either way Rune Factory is a great series and anyone who helped make that series has got my attention.

  • Zer0faith

Glad to see that those guys are alive and kicking, all while preparing a new game since I feared that we wouldn’t be seeing any more games from them for a while if ever.

  • I really hope this means Marvelous managed to rescue at least some part of Neverland, and that this is a new Harvest Moon spin-off. I love Rune Factory and I wouldn’t want it to end, but it would be nice to see another series in a different kind of setting.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Harvest Moon with more steampunk series or futuristic one? Like Steamboat Chronicles? Sign me uppppp.T_T

      • I don’t know if futuristic would work, but something that isn’t as fantasy-esque as RF would be interesting. Or maybe even a slightly different take on the fantasy setting. I just hope Marvelous don’t toss Rune Factory into the fanservice bin.

        • mockturtle

They tried futuristic once, with Innocent Life: A Futuristic Harvest Moon for PSP and PS2? Ostensibly, it didn’t work; reception was tepid at best.

          • Landale

I tried that one. The setting seemed decent enough, but the game seemed buggy as hell.

          • mockturtle

Did you play on PSP or PS2? Because I know the PSP game *was* buggy as hell, but I read that the PS2 version was exponentially more stable.

          • Landale

I assume the PS2 version. Whichever is up for download on the PS3.

          • mockturtle

I wasn’t aware it was on PS3. Anyway, I guess that’d be the PS2 version. Oh well.

          • Well, part of the reason for that was that the game was on PSP. That’s not where Harvest Moon’s audience is. But it could be the game itself, too. I don’t know… I never played Innocent Life. Somehow, it looked very boring on the surface.

          • mockturtle

Ironically, I thought Innocent Life looked more interesting than your standard Harvest Moon. Never did buy it, though.

      • chibidw

Defeats the purpose if you have it take place in a heavily technological era but otherwise never use it because the narrative is “nature = good, science = bad”. Innocent Life was just awful with that.

      • mockturtle

        “Like Steamboat Chronicles?”
        “Steamboat Chronicles?”

    • Warboss Aohd

would Generation of Chaos be among those?

      cause i like that franchise.

      • Generation of Chaos is handled by Idea Factory, I believe.

      • Landale

No. That’s an Idea Factory thing. Basically it’s a label they have for any of their games in their Neverland setting which is primarily, but not exclusively, the Spectral series.
Makes sifting through either companies games kind of annoying on a site like Gamefaqs, it makes no distinction between Neverland the company and Neverland the Idea Factory labeling.

    • I was thinking about the same thing after the message Hashimoto left on the game’s blog.

Still, it’s great to see that they’re still active.

    • Raul Indries

What i would like, is a Rune Factory only with a world more like Xenoblade Chronicles, fantasy/sci-fi, or Rogue Galaxy, go on other planets, but keep the Rune Factory feel.

  • Blur Will

Hope it’s RPG or Action RPG game

and hope they are making RF5 too

  • Kornelious

I really REALLY liked Rune factory story it had all my favorite things an anime-esque story, JRPG elements, cool combat, DUAL FREAKING SWORDS, a slew of interesting characters, a nice story, lots of freedom and stuff to do, and most importantely…the ability to marry my choice of waifu! :D

So, yeah I look forward to what they have in store next :)

    • kaotron

the only thing I didnt like about it was the lack of post game content, the skills/weapon types are very limited and all the waifu’s are loli’s…

      • Anewme…Again

I don’t know which Rune factory you are talking about, but RF4 had lot of post games content.

        • Landale

If the RNG ever let you see it. It still hasn’t let me move on to the last portion of the game, nevermind any post game content. >_>

          • Anewme…Again

Second arc is the end of the game, the third arc is post games content.
So you’re already playing the end games content, also there’s the sharence maze you can buy with prince point.
You need sharence maze to get materials for all the strongest weapon, armors and accessories, you also can only learn some recipe from getting bread from the final floor of the sharence maze.

          • Landale

Ok, well, the point still stands that the RNG can just keep blocking you off from quite a bit of the content.
The fact that people refer to it as an arc rather than simply being post game content had me thinking it’s not even letting me finish the main game rather than just blocking me off from the post game.

          • Anewme…Again

Needing to see an event that appear only randomly to start the last arc was an extremely stupid idea imo.
Still you can help make it happen a bit faster by cancelling all festivals.

  • CDM

    I’m calling a Rune Factory spin-off, which would make it a spin-off of a spin-off!

Or maybe a remake. At the very least I feel certain it isn’t going to be the next main series Rune Factory.

    • Strain42

Hey, Persona is a spin-off of a spin-off and look how that turned out. Anything can happen! :D

  • JMaster3000

W/e comes from them to 3DS i’m sure that it won’t come to Europe.
    And i won’t ever forget about RF4 Europe cancellation… never….

    • JMaster3000

If only Xseed released it digital on eShop…. should we bombard them?

EDIT:With bombarding i mean with emails to release it in Europe somehow :P

      • Yuuki

it would be enough to make it region free, which is something nintendo allows.

        • JMaster3000

Yeah but Nintendo won’t do that.
Anyways, i’m contacting Xseed about it.
Its weird how they are restocking the physical copies of the game in USA and we can’t even get the game.
Couldn’t they release the game on eShop/Physical like Atlus did with Persona 4 Golden and Conception II?

Will post here if they answer me.

          • Yuuki

they could take out the region code out of the game so that all regions can play it.
This is something nintendo basicly allows.

          • JMaster3000

            They do allow?
I thought only Sony allowed that.

          • Yuuki

dont know if its still true or not, but before the 3ds was launched they said that the devs could decide if there is an region lock or not.
But seeing that all games are region locked as of now it seems that nintendo scrapped it or wont support it.

          • mockturtle

The only time Nintendo allowed that was for physical copies of 3DS Guide: Louvre. And they only did that because A) they made it, B) it’s not technically a game, C) it’s not rated, and most importantly D) you can only buy it at the goddamn Louvre.

          • Taedirk

Different publishers. XSEED has rights for NA distribution while Marvelous AQL Europe has (had?) the EU rights. The general assumption is that shit hit the fan with Neverland going out of business before they were able to get the game out the door for EU.

          • JMaster3000

Idk how that works, but look at Atlus.
They released both Persona 4 Golden and now Conception II in Europe even thou they are a USA company.
Why didn’t they released Conception II through NIS America? They and NIS America made a contract about releasing Atlus games in Europe.
its kinda weird that Atlus releases their games in Europe.

So i guess if the company has the license for the game then they can release it w/e they want, or something like that. It can be arranged to release the game on eShop here.

And about Marvelous AQL Europe, i think they were late to get the licensce, Neverland filled the bankcruptcy and most likely they haven’t bought it by that time.

          • Taedirk

Atlus is also an international developer. XSEED isn’t, they’re just localization and publishing. Apples and oranges problem again; they’re both fruit, but definitely not the same thing.

  • Tom_Phoenix

I wonder if this means that the European release of RF4 could still somehow be salvaged. After all, the bakruptcy of Neverland was most likely the reason why it got canned, so now that the developers are settled in again, they could work on a European build for the game.

Of course, that could just be wishful thinking on my part.

  • Yan Zhao

Im glad these guys are ok and making more great games :D

  • So, for those wondering; the kanji on the website seem to be 禁忌 (kinki, the same as in the URL), which mean “Taboo”.

Can’t make out anything out of マ alone though.

EDIT: Looks like it’s pointing toward 禁忌のマグナ (Kinki no Magna)

    • AkiraScare

      A Kinky Game???? (0_0)

      • ronin4life

Lol. 3DS already has plenty of those…
        ^ ,^;

        • AkiraScare

          Sadly not overseas (TT_TT)

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            Senran Kagura

    • Kaetsu

      What does magna mean?

      • I’m not sure, but it might be the plural of the latin word magnum (Great).

  • AlphaSixNine

    Please be Rune Factory 5…

  • Liamv2

I’m guessing Europe won’t be getting this either. Yes I am still butthurt over RF4.

  • I really, really hope it’s Neverland. Even if their awesome name is gone, those developers are my favorite developers ever simply for making Lufia I and II. I’d like to especially find out some time about what exactly happened to the director of those games, Masahide Miyata and also the music director Yasunori Shino… I don’t think either of them had anything to do with any of the games in the Rune Factory series, though.

  • Slickyslacker

I wouldn’t expect a new RF title so soon, especially since 4 performed so well. Nor would I expect them to be working on the next Harvest Moon, even. I suppose the former Neverland members are developing something original…

  • I though they were going bankrupt, good news to see them going on.

  • Kaetsu

The teaser image looks kind of sci fi-ish. Maybe Rune Factory in space lol?
