Well, That’s A Pretty Jolly Demon In Toukiden

By Eugene . February 11, 2014 . 9:01am

The Jollux in Toukiden seem like a bunch of pretty jolly oni. You can imagine them chortling to themselves after setting traps against Slayers, using their high levels of intelligence. Once you’re trapped, beware, as they’ll then leap straight on top of you, crushing every bone into dust as they laugh joyously.

Yeah… Don’t get caught in those traps. In other news, Toukiden’s website has been updated with a whole host of the demons you’ll have to face down and kill on your travels. You can check them out below. The Jollux is just the tip of the iceberg.

A large Oni with the body of a spider and the head of a lion, they are highly feared by the villagers. With their sickle-shaped claws, they can cut through just about anything, leading to their bloodstained appearance.

Chthonian Fiend

A large Oni that is enshrouded in hellfire, they possess an overwhelming presence and untold strength. It is thought that they are a higher level Oni, but the exact details are unclear.

A large Oni resembling a four-legged beast, they earned their name due to the way they slice through the wind as they effortlessly move about. They fly nimbly across the battlefield and attack with a sense of purpose, which has led to the deaths of many Slayers.

A large Oni, they use their four wings to easily soar through the skies and can incinerate their foes with their scorching hot breath. They have appeared in various Ages, and there are records of them suddenly appearing and laying waste to entire villages.

A large Oni with massive fin-like arms that they use to burrow through the ground and perform powerful attacks. They also utilize a sliding charge attack while on their stomachs, during which they use their fins to control their bodies.

A large Oni that resembles a ferocious warrior, their four arms possess the power of fire and ice. Since they do not have any type of legs, they move slowly, but their long range and wide-reaching attacks are not to be underestimated.

A small Oni with sharp claws and a prominent belly, they can be found throughout the Otherworld. They always move in packs, and will attack any human they see.

A small Oni that resembles a spider, they often appear in large numbers. They are capable of spitting forth a powerful poison, so newer Slayers should keep a close eye on them at all times.

A giant Oni that for some reason displays no interest in humans, they simply lurch about the Otherworld at their leisure. On occasion, they have been seen spewing forth an unknown substance, leading to speculation that their purpose is to promote the conversion of the human world into the Otherworld.

Blazing Soul

A small Oni that is engulfed in flames and floats in the air. They do not move about much, simply investigating their immediate surroundings, so it is believed that they are some sort of scouts. They are capable of spewing forth powerful flames, making it deadly to get too close to them without taking proper precautions.

A small Oni that is capable of flight by flapping its large ears, they attack with balls of lightning when at a distance, and use their whip-like tails when up close. Slayers need to approach carefully when they see these enemies moving in groups.

An Oni that burrows through the earth, they utilize sound and vibrations to know when their prey approaches and rise up suddenly from the ground to strike. Normally, they devour the souls of organisms within the ground, but recently, they have aggressively pursued prey above ground in Ages where the conversion to the Otherworld has progressed.

Rockshell (Because every game deserves an armored turtle)

An Oni that resembles a turtle, they are at home near water. The shell on their backs is as hard as stone, and they are capable of multiple varying attacks. The bottom part of their shell is relatively soft, making them vulnerable when they are flipped over on their backs.

An Oni with the head of a monkey, the body of a tiger, and a snake for a tail, they are one of the stronger smaller sized Oni. In addition to their speed, they utilize their sharp fangs and claws for powerful attacks. They are a definite threat to novice Slayers.

An Oni with massive sharp claws that are covered in a red shell, they slide across the ground and can breathe fire. Highly aggressive, they attack humans on sight. They are among the stronger smaller sized Oni, and are commonly referred to as “Recruit Hunters” due to the sheer number of Slayers that have died in battle with them.

Toukiden: Age of Demons will be published for the PlayStation Vita February 11th (today) in North America and February 14th in Europe.

Getting this today as soon as the PlayStation Store updates.

  • DanijoEX ♬ the Cosmic Owl

I’ll be getting mine’s in March since there isn’t any big release that I want. I spent alot money several days ago on Bravely Default…so I’m broke temporary.

  • SerendipityX

Is it weird that I find the Drumble kinda cute? Especially when it hops towards you trying to eat your face~

  • icecoffemix

I wonder what their Japanese name are? Is it mythological based or funky like these english’s?

    • Aesma

Some seemed to be… ‘funky’ like the English counterpart.
Kazekiri (Wind Shredder). …well, it’s not like they can name it Kamaitachi, with how Kamaitachi is commonly depicted (weasels)…

      • icecoffemix

Kazekiri sounds awesome, not sure why it’d not be acceptable for english. Especially when they think it’s fine not to dub it anyway. o_O

        • Aesma

Agreed, hmm… it’s Japanese dub, right? Does that mean the characters will still call the demons by their Japanese names?

          • icecoffemix

Should be yep, but I’ve only played the demo and I forgot if they have voice during Manhunter scene or not.

I do remember Yorimoto said something about Shuten Douji though, a famous Oni in JP myth.

          • Aesma

Worry not, I am familiar with most Japanese myth.
If Shuten-Douji is in this story, and this story is focused on (Demons = Oni), then we can expect him to be an important plot monster or the final boss.

He IS the King of Oni after all…

          • icecoffemix

I hope so, though in this game every monster is called Oni (both in english text and Japanese voice) even when they look like giant slug with jaw. :P

          • Aesma

…and to think, one of Oni’s lesser known definition is ‘Japanese Vampire’… Between ‘Giant Ogre’ and ‘Japanese Vampire’, where did the slug came from?

          • icecoffemix

They use the term for all monster invading the world of Toukiden, so yeah it’s a bit more liberal than traditional JP use.

  • Great designs. I’ll probably be waiting a good couple of months before getting this, though.

    • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Why? SS and RO have shown that these games’ online activity only declines with the passing of time~.

      • TheExile285

That’s true for most online games. And SS didn’t really decline quickly.

      • Time. Working adults like myself who are giving hope to the future don’t have all the time in the world to play every new release. Also, I normally don’t give a fling fig about online activity.

        • MaximDualBlade

You seem to have time to write that you don’t have enough time.

          • Of course I do. And you have enough time to read about it. It’s a win-win!

  • TheExile285

I’m interested in fighting Chthonian Fiend the most. I love fighting humanoid monsters in hunting games.

    • z_merquise

Haven’t really played any hunting games but the design Chtonian Fiend (Red Oni?) looked really good.

    • icecoffemix

I recently replayed the demo (since I’m getting reg 3 and was playing reg 1 demo, good bye hours of grinding :'( ) and got to fight him again in the beginning with perspective of someone’s familiar with the game, he is actually really hard compared to sluggish telephonic Manhunter!

      Won’t be long now!

  • ArmoredBoar

What’s with those weird english names?
Might as well rename Toukiden into The Demon Chase or something, jeez.

    • icecoffemix

Yeah, it’s rather bad too. I mean even though MH does rename some of their monster it’s at least not as err, funky, like these one.

It’s probably too late to change it too.

(unless they also named them like these originally)

      • J_Joestar

        • icecoffemix

          Yes harrowhalf?

It’s better than the original Hapurubokka or something and it’s what? one out of how many monster?

(not to mention at least it’s cooler sounding than most of monster here)

Note that I like Toukiden much better than MH, and the monster name probably doesn’t even get any mention in the game beside archive, but it’s still cringeworthy.

          • ArmoredBoar

I dunno, I would’ve been fine with Happlebocker.
            But then Nibelsnarf happened.

    • Skeptika Crediblus

      Hey YEAH!

  • 弾いと死で!

  • z_merquise

I find it odd to see English names for the monsters. Maybe I already got used with the Japanese names for the fantasy creatures in Muramasa.

Maybe they just made it that way in the localization to easily remember the names of the monsters.

  • pixxxelz

My copy of this and danganrompa should arrive tomorrow I can’t wait!!

  • Aesma

    Is Howler… Nue?

    • Dan Blanco Vivo

yep, their actually called Nue in the japanese version.

  • Altin

Jollux: “Am I kawaii, uguu ~”

  • Love the design of Chthonian Fiend. But they should have called him The demon scorpion or something more easy to pronounce lol.

  • Dave

Played the japanese version, both PSP and VITA. Not impressed, in fact i’d dare venture to say that it sucks.

  • Croix Zapp

Hoho, i shall play toukiden while pretending i am Guts slaying apostle~~
