The Year of Luigi Ends On March 18th, Says Miyamoto

By Ishaan . February 18, 2014 . 9:29am

The Year of Luigi, Nintendo’s year-long celebration involving the green Mario brother, will come to an end on March 18th, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto has announced via Miiverse.

“Almost a year has passed since I announced the Year of Luigi, marking the 30th anniversary of Luigi’s debut,” Miyamoto writes. “Thanks to everyone’s kind support, we were able to release many Luigi games over the course of the year. I hope everyone continues to cheer for the green brother!”

“However, all good things must come to an end, and the Year of Luigi will conclude on March 18,” Miyamoto continues. “From this date on, the Year of Luigi Community and its Developers’ Room will sadly no longer accept new posts or comments.”

With exactly a month to go before the Year of Luigi officially comes to an end, it should be interesting to see if Nintendo have any last-minute announcements in store before the deadline arrives, or whether Miyamoto’s message was simply meant to serve as a heads-up for Miiverse users that use the Luigi community.

I’m betting they’ll announce another downloadable title in March’s Nintendo direct that will come out on March 18th.

  • ronin4life

    I knew it… ^_^;;

  • Nanaki

Next is Year of Wario! I would like that.

I wish for an improved version of Wario Ware DIY .w.

    • d19xx

I agree. But with all the lbgt talk lately, Birdo should be given some spotlight…

      • John Diamond

where r my black mushroom princesses huh???? HUH???

  • Grape Monet

That’s an oddly-specific date. I know that it’s a Tuesday, and Nintendo updates their online stores in Japan on Wednesday and North America the day after, but why the 18th?

    • Guest

For you, the 18th was the end of the Year of Luigi. For Nintendo, it was Tuesday.

  • It’sa day after my birthday! Was a neat-o year-a!

  • Anthony Hadow

How could there be year of Luigi if there was only 1 Luigi title available? Luigi’s Dark Moon was literally the only Luigi title available everything else Luigi was either the sidekick or DLC. Don’t get me wrong some of them were good games but none of them were Luigi games.

      Luigi’s Mansion.
      Dr. Luigi
      New Super Luigi U
      Mario & Luigi Dream Team
      Luigi Bros.
      Super Luigi Bros.
      A Luigi themed 3DS XL
      Luigi Swapnote Stationary
      A Luigi short-movie
The Luigi themed Wii U Summer Tour
Tons of Luigi cameos in all of the Nintendo games released this year
      And much more…

I say they did a lot with Luigi.

        Luigi short-movie?

      • Anthony Hadow

Dr. Luigi is Basicay DR. mario wih few minor details.
New super Luigi U is DLC
Mario and Luigi Dream Team still stars mario only Luigi is now not just a partner he is also a gimick
Super Luigi Bros is another game with minor new details
Luigi themed 3ds is not a game whatsoever
Swapnote has been stopped as far as I know and a stationary is not a game
        Movie is not a game
Summer tour is DLC and not really a game
        Cameos are not GAMES

The only actual LUIGI title is Dark Moon so while they did put Luigi in a lot they are not stand alone Luigi titles and if they are gunna claim Year of Luigi the cameos are fine but 1 Luigi game does not make a yea of luigi

        • Engi3Piece

Sounds like tour nitpicking to me

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Luigi got his own game in Super Mario 3D World]

Dr Luigi is much more expansive than dr mario

          • Anthony Hadow

How did he get his own game in 3d world Mario is in the title sounds like a non luigi game to me. Dr luigi is dr mario with more content its basically the same. you cant say that these titles are unique Luigi titles. They could have made more actual Luigi games. What about a Paper Luigi game after PMTYD they already have a basic plot to follow for the story. Would have paid plenty for that especially since the sticker star failure

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Its a secret game unlock able that you can play from the title screen

          • Anthony Hadow

Doesnt count then thats like saying just because you get to play luigi in part of any game its automatically a Luigi based game I guess SUper mario 3d world is also a luigi game? its not a mario game, or a peach game, or a toad game nope just luigi. Nevermind the fact the default is mario, and the title has mario in it

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

No I mean nintendo put an entire game called Super Luigi brothers inside a seperate game mode in Super Mario 3D World

      • Engi3Piece

        Don’t forget The Luigi Nendorid

  • J_Joestar

any Nintendo characters celebrating an anniversary milestone this year?

    • Grape Monet

Little Mac is 30, Diddy Kong is 20. This isn’t really a character, but Smash Bros. is now 15.

      • J_Joestar

it would be cool if they had a Year of Little Mac, but then they probably would have saved his Smash reveal for it.

  • Highasthesky

Thank god, YOL SUCKED! Year of Rosalina seems possible with all the appearances she’s been having.

    • God

      No problem.

  • Personally I’m hoping for Year of Mouser next…

  • AlteisenX

It will always be the Year of Luigi for me… x[

  • Kristoffer Brandberg

I hope there will be a year of the Koopalings. They have made a comeback a years back and they could use a lot more attention.

  • Solomon_Kano

Which reminds me that I need to pick up Dark Moon. Too bad we never got the white Luigi XL here, but dah well. Twas a good year for Weegee.

    • Kaetsu

Dark Moon is really good. I highly recommend it if you have a 3DS.

  • KoRLumen

    It’s a bit late, but…. Year of Samus, pls? ;_;

  • “Back in your box Luigi!” /Mario

  • Jettythesunfish

    Go Weegee!

  • Göran Isacson

    The year may end in time… but it will go on in my heart. ;_;

  • Leonard Norwood Jr.

Besides all the bull with a few commenters, this was at least an interesting time for Luigi to have his year. I still remember Luigi back then in the beginning when I first saw him, Of course Super Mario Bros, Luigi had a palette swap, but as the games go on, he’s been a bit more different than his brother, although I liked it better when Luigi also had a bit braver personality, at least from what I’ve seen in games and TV shows. I remember I played the heck out of Luigi on Super Mario Bros 2 (Doki Doki panic version imo), he had a higher jump than mario, that made things a bit helpful, I beat the game once with him too. When it gets down to it, I felt that Luigi did leave his brother’s shadow, I don’t know when he’s been there, but it is good to see him at least have his year. I’m pretty sure that I’ll be looking forward to see what they will do with Luigi someday.
