Next Gears of War Has To “Reignite Franchise,” Says Microsoft’s Phil Spencer

The next Gears of War game, currently in development for the Xbox One at Black Tusk studios, will take a while before it’s ready for release, says Microsoft’s Phil Spencer, who made the following tweet (thanks, OXM) in response to a fan:

In response to Spencer’s tweet, another fan voiced his agreement, stating that the felt Gears of War 4 “needs to be huge”. Spencer replied: “And I believe we’ve built the right team to achieve that goal, I just want to give them the time.”

Microsoft recently purchased the Gears of War license from Epic Games, and assigned Black Tusk to develop further games in the series. At the time, Spencer revealed that the series has sold 22 million copies thus far.

That’s a no-brainer. That is, having to reignite the series. Doing it correctly is the hard part but if it’s anywhere near as good as the first two games, I’m all for it.

I feel bad for Black Tusk. Last I heard, they were working on a new IP. I can’t help but feel that they were forced to put their project on the back burner just so someone could work on GoW.

As one who supports all consoles for healthy competition (shocking right?) I wish them the best since the the FPS is in long need of some reinventing though Titanfall seems like a step in the right direction.

It sounded good at first, but when more info was revealed, it looks like a huge as hell letdown.

Titanfall is a great game, loving the Beta but I don’t think its reinventing the genre. It’s essentially playing it safe, their making an entire game based only on multiplayer.

It’s hard to bring back Gears and make it good again.
The first game was fun and 2 was a blast with multiplayer, the campaign for both were really enjoyable as well. Then 3 happened and then I was worried, then after Judgement I just said fuck this. I really don’t know how they can recover after Judgement.
Also I find it funny how two GoW titles were released around the same time for PS3 and 360 and they were both the 4 main entry in their series and they were sort of origin based as well, yet both were letdown games.

Since they managed to wrap up the story within the trilogy. I can’t help but think that “reignite” is pretty much “reboot”…

There’s not much else to do or tell within the Gears world… it’ll take a lot to “reignite” interest in it. MS should’ve let Black Tusk create a new IP instead.
