By Ishaan . February 21, 2014 . 12:03am

Who knew this character will be revealed due to the NA and EU release date of Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze? Called it!

    • J_Joestar

i think a lot were expecting it last week during the direct to be closer to the Japanese release date.

    • Otto Cerqueira

Never noticed the stars on his shirt right above the nipples. Is this supposed to feel… sexual?

      • AuraGuyChris

I can attest none of the kongs have….uh, nipples, so your argument is invalid.

        • ronin4life

But some of them wish they did.

          Enter Star-Nipple shirts.

For everyone who is asking for Yoshi back wait for March 14…

    • BalmungX

Yeah i’m waiting for yoshi and Captain Falcon, why are they taking so long?*sigh*

      • 하세요

Suspense. If they wanted, they could’ve just slapped the entire roster up months ago, then we’d just be sitting around twiddling our thumbs until release.

This way, the hype never dies down.

        • ronin4life

          It never builds up
          It never dies down
          The Goldy Locks Hype.

        • BalmungX

Yeah,It’s true,i just want to see Cap again already, but i understand the need to calculate the reveals to maintain the hype level constant

  • Chanka

    Captain Falcon… Please come back.

    • God

Wait! Wait! WAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIT, YOU MOTHERFUCKER!!! You tellin’ me Captain Falcon still hasn’t been comfirmed?! Well, that does it, i don’t care who they put in, if Falcon is not in, I’m not in.

      • Twilleppac

They’re probably waiting for something special or getting other characters out of the way, there’s NO WAY they would ditch an iconic character like Captain Falcon.

        • God

Probably, or at least i hope so… BTW, seems like someone didn’t get the Tenacious D reference…

          • Twilleppac

lol nope never watched Tenacious D :p. They’ll probably Reveal Captain Falcon when like F-Zero X or Maximum Velocity comes to the WiiU’s Virtual console or something like that

          • God

Let’s hope so… And go listen to some Tenacious D right now! It’s like stand up comedy but with 1000% more guitar awesomness.

      • hazelnut1112

He will be announced alongside the announcement of the new F-Zero game.

        • British_Otaku

You say “new F-Zero game” as if F-Zero has actually had a game on portables, arcades or consoles in the last ten years (the last installment being a Japan-exclusive GBA title released on October 21, 2004)… >_> Sure, it got cameos through Smash Bros, Tekken (costumes) and Nintendo Land among other things, but I don’t expect a game even if I do expect him to return.

        • God

The devs have stated in multiple occasions their lack of interest on a new F-Zero, sadly.

          • hazelnut1112

Nintendo never specifically said they weren’t interested in F-Zero. They said that they don’t know how to make a new F-Zero that exceeds GX’s expectations. They would want to make a new one, but one that would be better than the GC version.

          • God

No, actually the creator of F-Zero said, “Why would you want a new F-Zero?” during an interview, given the context, it’s implicit that he meant he had no plans for making one.

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

he in the game just not revealed

  • Twilleppac

Huh, what’s with Samus in the one pic with her, Diddy and Lucario? It looks like she’s running in mid air.

    • KoRLumen

I want to think it’s her b-air, but that flash of green… *shrug* . If it’s a new move, I’m all for it lol.

      • Twilleppac

I’m hoping for maybe the speed booster in some form.
        Edit: Or the Shinespark.

    • NintendoPSXTheSecond

It’s her backwards midair attack, where she basically turns to roundhouse kick behind her.

  • hazelnut1112

This officially debunks that supposed leaked roster. Who do you think will be announced next?

    • 6souls

      But it does follow this leaked roster;

      • ronin4life

Not exactly: It says he comes paired with Trixie. And he doesn’t.

      • hazelnut1112

This was the roster I was talking about. This is now blown out of the water since it said when Diddy was announced, it was supposed to be him and Dixie as a tag team. Officially debunked.

        • DragKudo

I think it meant as a palette swap like female and male fit trainer.

          • hazelnut1112

Nope, read carefully. It says that they would have been a tag team where you switch between the two characters like Shiek and Zelda.
Never said anything about them being a palette swap, only characters they said were going to have that were palette swaps were Villager and Wii Fit Trainer.

          • DragKudo

i didn’t say that’s what the list said. I’m saying that’s what it can mean. Wii fit trainer seems to have a different fighting move according to the list. The male trainer wasn’t revealed until later after the female. So until they release more info on diddy kong you can’t say the list has been debunked. I mean look this guy has been right so far.

          • hazelnut1112

Not gonna start an argumen but you seriously need to learn to read between the lines. It was supposed to be a tag team duo, not a palette swap. It doesn’t get any clearer than this because it doesn’t read as anything but that. Only Villager and WFT have palette swaps.
Don’t get your hopes up, the list has been officially debunked because of Diddy’s reveal. It will most likely mean Dixie will be a standalone character or will not be in the roster period.

          • DragKudo

if you actually read the list you would see it says a tag-team, similar to Zelda and Sheik.

Is shiek and zelda a tag duo? kind of they are two characters with different play styles in one. They can switch back and forth. So no this does not debunk the list. Until we get more info it does not debunk the list.

          • hazelnut1112

Now it’s making sense and I see what you mean. Like Diddy, Zelda is announced but no Shiek…yet. This could very well go with Dixie as well. I get you now.

      • DragKudo

ah man this kind of sucks. Why pacman though he was already in a fighting game with megaman. Out of all the characters from namco they go with pacman?!

Wish Bayonetta and or Jack frost would have been in this. q_q

FINALLY, Lanky Kong can return in some obscure fashion

    • Crevox

Yeah I don’t know what’s up with creepy DK… the DK in smash brothers has always been much different than the DK in country.

    • KoRLumen

      Look at dem pearly pearls.

    • Altumn

Reminds me of Reggie from Nintendo.

  • Hagaren

That first screenshot…. is he going Gear Third?!
Also, the one where his gun explodes made me laugh more than it should have.

  • Göran Isacson

Oh my God, Diddy, Lucario and Samus in that one picture. We thought Zelda going Jojo-pose was a one-off occurence, but maybe they’re ALL coming down with the pose-itis.

  • Chaos_Knight

    Dhalsim, is that you?

    • Time Sage

You mean Lanky Kong don’t you?

  • Just Tim

C’mon now, with Street Fighter references piling up in SSB, when will SSB FINALLY have a proper Arcade Edition? Even Mario Kart AND F-Zero got arcade versions.

Having an Arcade version actually recognizes SSB as a *legitimate* fighting game; just look at Tatsunoko VS Capcom, Marvel vs Capcom, X-Men vs Street Fighter, Street Fighter, BlazBlue, Guilty Gear, Cyberbots, Tech Romancer, Warzard, Last Blade, King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, Capcom vs SNK, SVC Chaos, SNK vs Capcom, Street Fighter x Tekken, Tekken, Sengoku Basara X, Melty Blood, Fate/unlimited codes, to name a few.

    • Having an Arcade version actually recognizes SSB as a *legitimate* fighting game

That’s kind of the thing, though. They don’t want it to be viewed as a fighting game. I’ve lost count of how many times Sakurai has insisted he isn’t out to make a fighting game.

      • Just Tim

Unfortunately, that intention backfired at least once, during Melee’s heyday, to the point even Shoryuken.com praises Melee and we have the meme,

Long before even this news thread alone, I still remember running into SSB fanboys in real life that insisted, “SMASH IS A FIGHTING GAME!!!” even to the point I used the arcade game status card, just to prove them otherwise. I even invited a lot of them to play Tatsunoko VS Capcom, but just the very prospect of losing to Roll is more embarrassing than losing to Pichu or any other SSB joke character.

Thankfully, you DID just back me up on that one.

        • Exactly, I bought the 64 version because I wanted to play a fun ‘brawler’ type with the buds. Every game in the franchise satisfies this need. But every once in a while you meet a “NI/FO/FD” type your picture describes perfectly and you just wanna put the controller down and say “Go for it, I’ll just watch.”

        • Kaihedgie

Sorry, but the crowd you’re wanting Nintendo to appeal to is of a minority, not the majority.

          • Just Tim

I purposely played Devil’s Advocate, especially when I had to deal with “SMASH IS A FIGHTING GAME!!!” argument for six years when I already know otherwise.

            Glad to know what’s up.

        • Yeah, Sakurai tends to say that Melee was a mistake a lot.

    • British_Otaku

It doesn’t need one. Mario Kart and F-Zero are in completely different universes as far as competitive skill for racing, so that isn’t really a point in favour of being seen as a fighter as much as this:

Having arcade releases is usually more of a sign of iterative design and development (though the MK and F-Zero examples are their own beasts) than being a “legit” fighting game. Were the last 13 years of Dead or Alive games not fighting games, or less competitive or legit simply for not being on the arcade platform till now?

      • Just Tim

I’m talking about a game franchise, having arcade appearances.

As for Dead or Alive itself, they are indeed fighting games, but the fact that Tomonobu Itagaki went graphics whore during the 2000s gaming decade set back the franchise, even with having arcade roots.

        • British_Otaku

I’m talking about how a game franchise/installment, having arcade appearances or not has no relevance to how much of a fighting game it is.

Fine if you want to dismiss 13 years of no direct arcade influence on console and portable DOA. >_> As for another example, the Eighting developed Naruto Clash of Ninja/Gekitou Ninja Taisen series could go head to head with most of those games for quality and “fighting gameness” and despite being a pure licensed game and never touching an arcade. Likewise, the recent Skullgirls and Yatagarasu have no arcade releases at all.

          Two questions…

          1) What is exactly the bonus that having an arcade release (from the beginning AND just having one of them on the side like you suggest) provides for fighting game perception?
          2) What do you really think are the barriers to Smash Bros or others being seen as a fighting game?

… Having an arcade installment seems one of the poorest thought out benchmarks around.

          • Just Tim

Both Skullgirls and Yatagarasu are actually getting Japan-only arcade releases via Taito’s NESiCAxLive, while the Naruto games you namedropped are typical cash-ins on a big-name license.

            To answer your questions:

            1. It’s an old-school bias; believe me, this is still alive in the American fighting game community and still the de facto standard in Japan.

            2. As for Smash Bros specifically, an arcade appearance with a traditional arcade control command set.

          • British_Otaku

So it is poorly thought out benchmarks all around… >_>

Would you say that Skullgirls and Yatagarasu will finally become “legitimate” fighting games thanks to a few arcades in Japan having them? When the games started elsewhere, the scene for competitive play is mostly on PC and consoles…

Didn’t you namedrop Tatsunoko vs Capcom, X-Men vs Street Fighter and Marvel vs Capcom? The examples I gave were quality technical fighting games by Eighting (Bloody Roar, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Marvel vs Capcom 3 among others), not that quality is the question here as much denying something is a fighting game based on empty requirements. Even if they were terrible, between the worst Batman action adventure game and Arkham Asylum both would be action adventure.

Perhaps you would consider Gundam vs Gundam (which is pretty dope) or Dragon Ball Zenkai Battle Royale (which looks okay at worst) seriously simply because of arcade installments …

            1) Unfortunate that this bias is pretty common and long standing then… >_> Rational thought about things tends to take a back seat in numbers… Oh and you didn’t say a reason aside from “people in the community think it makes a game legit”… Is that it? Dead or Alive 3, 4, Dimensions, 5, 5+ aren’t legit, but 5U/A is okay?

            2) Maybe I need to regather my thoughts so I can relate to this mindset again… I can see the traditional arcade control thing a bit, even if it may be a bit of trouble to work with the analog movement but not why anyone would think not having a mostly forgotten arcade installment legitimises a fighting game or series… >_>

  • The Watcher

    Rocket Punch

  • MrJechgo

    o…k… That’s just creepy XP

  • Peanut gun!

  • fairysun

Finally!! Someone who can compete with female Wii trainer on equal level. That agility and flexibility, go Diddy!!

  • EtroAnime

    This is just bananas.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Oh snap his Peanut gun is back to bust a nut all in your face yo! Foe Sho!….*little to fur?* yeah not Punny I know

  • MrRobbyM

Yay. He was one of my favorites in Brawl. Now I only hope this means he has a better chance of appearing in Kart..

  • Spirit Macardi

They seem to be revealing characters around the time that new games with them come out. I have a feeling we’ll see Yoshi next around the time that the new Yoshi’s Island for 3DS hits shelves.

Granted though I’m hoping to see some more new faces show up amidst the returning roster.

    • Eric Harris

Does that mean they’ll have to release a new Mother game? YESSSSSSSSS!!!

      • Kaetsu

Well considering Wii U VC is getting GBA games, there might be an English translation of Mother 3.

    • BalmungX

      Well,i’m waiting F-Zero then

  • Eric Harris

How many playable characters is this game gonna have? 150? That’s awesome.

    • J_Joestar

If they did have that many, then they would have to have a 151 for Mew.

      • Eric Harris

Aw heck why not just add all the pokemon at this point. I want 750 characters!

    • Guest

39 playable characters and 13 supports

      • Eric Harris

didn’t brawl have about 38? I visited gfaqs to see what fans there were saying some speculate/hope ssb will have about 50.

    • Hagaren

Ignore that 39/13 comment below, I’m an idiot and thought I was posting on the J stars video article… ;)
As for this? Hopefully more than Brawl!

    • subsamuel01

He said the same amount as Brawl, no more. So around 38.

      • AuraGuyChris

        Alas, he never SAID this.

But because of the 3DS limitations, the roster may take a hit in numbers since both versions contain the same characters.

        • Kaetsu

It really sucks that the 3DS version is pulling back the Wii U version.

          • subsamuel01

It makes sense for them though, its obvious that the 3DS version will outsell the Wii U. Some of the major Smash fans will probably buy a Wii U just to play the game, but most of the money will come in from the 3DS version.

          • AuraGuyChris

I don’t really think this has anything to do with the roster in the first place. The truth of the matter is that only the roster’s and stage’s size will be limited by the 3DS’s existence in the mix. It doesn’t matter which console is more popular than the other.

If we didn’t have the 3DS, I bet you we’d have around 70 characters at best. I can only expect at least 50 in both games.

  • Hinataharem

Dhalsim? You’re gibbon him too much credit

    • s07195

Diddy Kong ain’t monkeying around this time around. XD
