Sonic Boom Developers Talk About How Sonic And Friends Have Changed

By Ishaan . February 25, 2014 . 11:32am

Sega have shared a behind-the-scenes developer video for Sonic Boom, their upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog multimedia project. As previously reported, the project consists of a Wii U game, a Nintendo 3DS game, an animated cartoon, and merchandise.

Sonic Boom is independent of other Sonic titles, and in the video, embedded above, the game’s developers discuss changes to the Sonic characters, including Knuckles, Amy and Tails, all of whom will be given an increased importance in the Sonic Boom game.

Sonic Boom is slated for release on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, but a release date for the game hasn’t been announced yet. You can read more about the project here.

      AH HA!

  • J_Joestar

I am skeptical that Eggman is really throwing a party on thursday…

  • Warren

I know some people are ok with the new designes, but this will take me some years to get used to. Especially since my parents got me into Sonic when he was “normal”.

    • Jesse

The designs are only for the Sonic Boom stuff, not the main series.

    • J_Joestar

outside of looking a bit stretched with some wardrobe changes, most of them don’t seem that drastic to me, Muscles the Echidna though is still a bit jarring to look at.

    • Arcana Drill

Like jesse said, this game is being developed with the intent for mutual advisement with the tv series, so they wont continue using the designs on the main games of the franchise. (So i guess SB is a kinda spin off?)

  • roboticpainter .

    who is “tales”? :)

  • Kaetsu

That clip of Travis Willingham was amazing!

    • Spirit Macardi

When is Travis Willingham NOT amazing? x3

Looks like the original series will still continue. I wonder how the Sonic Boom series will go?

Cindy Robinson plays ANOTHER rodent? First, Makoto and now Amy XD

She sounds so frakkin weird man

At first I thought this was an absolutely terrible idea, but after watching this video it doesn’t look too bad. Admittedly it’d be a terrible idea if this was the future of the entire franchise as a whole (then again, I wouldn’t be surprised since imo it hasn’t been very good since the first Sonic Adventure came out) but I like the idea of giving the characters more personality and a point. It’s a good direction, since a lot of people, myself included; really don’t like modern Sonic. It feels very “This is only cool until you graduate middle school.” something that didn’t happen to a franchise like Mario. If Sonic stayed the way he was, he could have easily been an all ages old and young franchise becoming as iconic as Felix The Cat or Mickey Mouse. But he was brought into the whole X-Treme early 00’s/late 90’s phase and hasn’t returned.

I like this because it seems they’re fleshing out that idea, instead of just dropping it halfway and settling for what Sonic currently is. There’s no way they can go back to classic Sonic, which is fine at this point; but it’s great that they’re at least going somewhere with the franchise that isn’t where they’ve been for the last 15 years. (You can talk about Sonic Colors, Sonic Lost World or whatever, it’s still the same Sonic that’s been around since Sonic Adventure came out, only from a different gaming perspective.) Even though I doubt I’ll be watching or playing the game/tv series, as someone who was once a huge fan of Sonic growing up, I think this is pretty good.

    • Kaihedgie

“. It feels very “This is only cool until you graduate middle school.”” That’s how Sega marketed Sonic since day 1

      • Theob Vious Choice

I wouldn’t quite say that, the original games were just fun to play; they were different, at times challenging and a nice change of pace as far as platformers go. It was about as all ages as most iconic characters. Sure, their target demographic was teenage kids; but unlike most other video game series; they managed to completely narrow down their demographic to pretty much only teenage kids.
I guess most people’s problem is that Sonic was not a franchise that grew up with them, they grew up; Sonic did not, nor did Sonic age well. That’s fine with me personally, my main thing is at least Sega is finally owning it; they are taking the main things that make Modern Sonic what it is; and emphasizing them. Classic was just speed and fun gameplay, Modern is more-so action/adventure, story and characters. I can dig that; as far as the franchise is concerned, I think this is a good direction.

  • I’m not sure if I’ll enjoy any of the Boom related stuff, but I think it’s a cool idea and hope it does well for them. I think having the main series and side stuff to fill out other niches and reach more audiences can work in their favor if done well. I just now wish that they’d continue the storybook stuff and play around more with it too.

    • Sentsuizan_93

So Little Mac’s uppercuts made Sonic have longer legs somehow? lol! XD

      • Scissors

        reason for the bandages

    • Seraph

      In the near future…

  • Abysswalker90

I literally bursted out laughing when I saw Knuckles.
Why do they have to give Amy those stupid long eyelashes, that’s kindergarten stuff.

    Other than that, looks good.

  • Ethan_Twain

Honestly? I’m kind of a fan. Unlike Mario, the Sonic universe is and always has been full of characters with dialogue and a certain amount of, well, character. So given that Sonic hasn’t been doing great at the whole straight up platformer thing lately (that Wii U game was so bad) why not take advantage of the distinct cast to make a game that leverages them?

I just hope that this works out better than the last time Sega tried to take advantage of Sonic’s world and characters. That turned into Sonic Dark Chronicles.

    • Happy Gamer

Yeah I was always torn many times because the Sonic universe has so much personality, but I felt the games didn’t follow as well. I felt that the game did justice when Sonic Adventure dropped for the Dreamcast, but felt the subsequent games were pretty meh.

I didn’t mind Sonic Adventure’s “open world”-ness because Sonic has so much lore behind it.

  • Serge

This look like Sonic Adventure, and that is good for me.

  • Hm.. can’t say I’m not excited for this after seeing that video! But the supposed “gameplay” in it seems more for the Wii U. Wonder how its gonna look on the 3DS, hope it still looks good.

  • Senka

In my opinion, this shouldn’t be viewed as some kind of evolution or progression from current Sonic. It’s obviously Sega’s attempt at starting over and building a new generation of Sonic fans so they can try to repeat the fandom they created from the 90s to mid 2000s. The current generation never seems satisfied for any given reason, so it makes sense to give up on them.
If it looks too childish and cartoony, then yeah… it’s supposed to be. That’s not to say that you CAN’T enjoy this if you’re older than 11 years old, but just keep in mind the intended audience when something looks weird.

…And if the video says all this, then sorry for just restating it. I didn’t watch it because I already know about this project.

Personally, I think the whole idea is doomed to failure, or mediocrity at best, but I think it’s interesting. In any case I respect Sega for trying to do something with Sonic while Capcom does absolutely nothing with Mega Man.

    • Kaihedgie

Why must everything come back to Mega Man? Let it go

      • Ixbran

because its the best way to compare too a company destroying its mascot, while others actually continue using their own.

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

          You should be using bomberman.

Because Megaman was just like sonic.

          Too many fucking games.

          • Kaihedgie

And just like Sonic, so many people whining about the game not going back to its rots

      • Senka

Sorry, I know that gets annoying, but the point is that Sonic is Sega’s mascot, right? And Mega Man is supposed to be Capcom’s mascot. I am a little biased, but I like both. I don’t think it’s that much of a stretch to make a comparison between the two considering their age and popularity.

That said, I wonder how long a company should lean on something just because it’s a “mascot”. I’m not sure what it means to have a video game mascot anymore. You could argue it’s a bad thing to just keep rehashing even if the games end up enjoyable.

Anyway, being a 90 kid I think it’s just neat and a little funny to see video games lasting long enough that it makes sense to try to grab a brand new generation of kids and turn them into fans. This is also something existing fans could enjoy. I know that’s just normal corporate practice, but this just feels weird. :P

Though now that I think about it, Nintendo already did this years ago with Mario way back then with the first “New Super Mario Bros.” game, huh… It just wasn’t as much of a change as this.

        • Kaihedgie

Mega Man isn’t Capcom’s mascot. The only character who was suppose to have had that role was Captain Commando, and everyone forgot about his game

          • Senka

Well… then forget it all. :P I should have known better or looked it up beforehand. Mega Man might as well be/have been their mascot, but I went and found out that he isn’t officially while Sonic is officially Sega’s mascot.
But anyway, it’ll be interesting to see if this can really grow a new crop of childhood fans like… some creepy consumer farm.

  • Seta Soujiro

“so yeah…we got stoned and thought, ‘bandages, why not? everybody loves bandages, they are rad!’ and so that’s what you are getting.”

    • Jake Joe

It should be left alone to Naruto. It’s bad enough to mock the people that are hurt to be confused as a style wardrobe .

  • Happy Gamer

I keep trying to think the classic style is better being a long time sonic fan, but I can’t help but really like these new designs.

  • Happy Gamer

I remember when I first saw this game on Siliconera, I commented something like how this game reminds me of Jak and Daxter Precursor Legacy, and would be so awesome if it were similar to it. I did some quick research into the developer, and Big Red Button Entertainment was founded by Ex-Naughty Dog art director in 2009. I just hope this turns out to be a great IP :)

  • Aqua King

I don’t like this Knuckles at all.

    • Daigure

Yeah, I was keeping my hopes up that they wouldn’t turn him into a complete joke, but judging from the (admittedly few) lines we heard, I feel like I’m going to be disappointed. .

  • NimbusStev

I’ll be honest, I actually liked everything they said in this video. I don’t care for the new character designs, but in reality they’re not bad. We’re just too attached to the ones we grew up with. Sonic lends itself well to a kids show, and we need to just embrace that. It’s time to move on and pass our old friend along to the next generation.

  • Blaz

I love seeing the VA’s work together. They kill the voices, anyone who says otherwise just wants to be a dick.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      The girls are funky

      • Daigure

I think the context of the scene they were voicing had them acting like the characters are acting; ie, their performances were janky on purpose.

  • Spirit Macardi

    “Colleen Villard Voice of Tails”

Wait… Why did they replace Kate Higgins?! She was fantastic in the role! For once Tails had a voice that wasn’t cringe-inducing! Damn, I’m really going to miss her…

Well, at least Sonic, Knuckles, and Eggman remain the same. I’m rather surprised at that recording footage though, since I had figured Mike Pollock acted via long distance, seeing as he’s a New York resident and the rest of the cast is in LA. I guess it speaks volumes about the quality of his performance when they’re willing to actually bring him in physically to play his role.

  • Pandakids09 .

Honestly they should have just made this Sonic Hero’s 2
