Tomb Raider Is Free On PlayStation Plus Next Month

By Ishaan . February 27, 2014 . 8:30am

March’s PlayStation Plus line-up is exciting. In both North America and Europe, Sony are offering Tomb Raider for free to PS Plus subscribers. Also available in both territories is Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition for PlayStation 4.

Additionally, North America will also get Thomas Was Alone and Lone Survivor: The Director’s Cut on PS3 and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on PS Vita, while Europe will get Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and Smart As.

You can find the full list of titles for North America here and Europe here.

I like the PS+ service, but I really do hate how they label PSP games as PS Vita just be honest there’s nothing wrong with giving away a PSP title

    • mojack411

Lol, yeah. I was like “There’s a MH game for the Vita?! Why did I not know about this?!” And then I realized why I didn’t know about it :P

  • DemonShadowX

Aside from Unit 13 and Dead Nation (for PS4 anyways), I already own or have played all these games. Kind of a meh month for me at least but I still have Lords of Shadow 2 to work on, and FFX&X2 are coming out soon, so they’ll keep me busy.

  • Duo Maxwell

Finally, a MH game for Vita!

    • Histirea

To be honest, I’m fine with this. You can map the second analog stick so it can control the camera (meaning no Claw, but I recommend only mapping the left/right controls instead of up/down), and even for a last-gen handheld, Freedom Unite looks noticeably better than 3 Ultimate.

However, I do wish Capcom would move Monster Hunter back to the PlayStation. They’re missing out on the power and graphics of Sony’s systems, and I feel they’ve had to make compromises because of that in the 3DS games.

      • Duo Maxwell

I don’t think Capcom is willing to improve their graphic. They could just stay at the 3DS graphic and sell a crapton of copies. Do you think they will bother upgrading MH graphic on the level of Toukiden? I don’t see it, honestly.

  • HA HA HA!
My friend did not wanted to buy PS PLUS, and bought TombRaider last week.
And now guess wht, I will get it for FREE! XDDDDDDDDD

  • mojack411

Even though I already own Tomb Raider on the PC I’ll still end up downloading it for PS3 because I love it so much and I don’t think my computer was running it properly.

  • MaskedHero99

Holly shit sony….and this is 151 reasons im team sony

  • Oh man, that’s cool.

Also Monster Hunter Freedom Unite? Cool, I’ve kept looking into getting that sometime, now’s my chance.

  • Chow

Almost everything I bought during last year’s Black Friday sales is becoming free on PS Plus like clockwork.

…I should buy a lottery ticket or something.

  • neo_firenze

Tomb Raider is a little less exciting now that the next gen “Definitive Edition” is out and is an improved version. But still, nice game.

Seems like almost all of Square Enix’s big name western developed games end up on Plus these days (see also: Deus Ex HR, Just Cause 2, Sleeping Dogs, Hitman: Absolution, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light). Maybe I should have held off on buying Thief for PS4…

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      the definitive editions a ripoff

      • neo_firenze

Well, the Definitive Edition is the same game with objectively better visuals than the PS3/360 version, so if that’s a ripoff…

Is it worth replaying if you’ve already played on PS3/360? Eh, probably not. But if it’s your first time through and you want the best version it’s the one I’d suggest.

Is it worth full price? To me, probably not. But I grabbed it for $39.99 off Amazon a couple weeks ago and felt that was fair.

Is it worth paying money for if you have Plus and can get the somewhat lesser (but still good) PS3 version for nothing? That’s up to you, but certainly sounds reasonable to go for the one that doesn’t cost more money…

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Improved graphics arent worth it. They dont make a difference. I think Lara’s new face is worse anyway. Only reason to buy the newer version is for better framerate

  • Vitor Duarte

This is great, PSPlus has been kicking lately!
After Bioshock Infinite now we get Tomb Raider? Nice!

  • Yan Zhao

Looks like I’ll be helping in SquareEnix’s “terrible” Tomb Raider sales by playing this for free :3

    • neo_firenze

Square Enix is still getting paid for this, it’s just that their money is coming from Sony (and indirectly from you through your PS Plus membership). Not a bad deal for SE either, since they get a jolt of additional revenue for a PS3 game where the sales have likely tapered off to a very low level.

I’d guess that between the additional money from the fairly inexpensive to develop PS4/XBO version, and some extra funds from Sony for PS Plus, Tomb Raider has ended up performing fine even with the (ridiculous) initial “under-performing” 3.5million or whatever amount of sales that was shortly after the game initially launched.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

tombraider was in the black two months ago before the ports came out

        • neo_firenze

Thanks for the clarification. Even so, it sure seemed like Square Enix wanted it to perform better than just going over the break-even point. And the new gen ports and PS Plus money can only make it more profitable.

  • AlaskanKactus

Next month is looking pretty good.
    -Tomb Raider
    -Blazblue Chronophantasma

  • SMT

Just yesterday I subscribed to PS Plus, after wondering why I haven’t done so earlier… This is just icing on the delicious, delicious cake that is PS Plus.

  • Learii

    I can’t wait

  • Kaihedgie

Nice but…I must save my space for Gundam Reborn >:

  • pixxxelz

Are you freaking kidding me!! This is awesome I already have it but still Tomb Raider was my second favorite game from last year!

  • artemisthemp

Great titles they give away for free.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      Tis getting a sequel/dlc

      • artemisthemp

        I know that

  • malek86

MHFU is kinda meh on the Vita. The camera steps weren’t adjusted for the analog stick, with the result that just touching the stick will usually result in the camera moving suddenly up or down when you don’t want it to.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      its a psp game.

      • malek86

I know, but considering they fixed MHP3 for the japanese release, they could have put a hand on this too.

Ah well, I know it’s a old game and it probably didn’t sell enough for them to care outside of Japan. But still. I actually liked it better on PSP because of that camera problem.

  • ishyg

…more vita backlogs. Not that I’m mad, I’m actually happy about it.

  • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

    moar dlc coming

  • Awesome stuff! I already have Thomas Was Alone on Steam BUT…. since it’s cross-buy… hehehe, I’ll be playing more on the Vita. Damn, more backlogs to add! And yes, yes… Tomb Raider! I waited so long and now, I can finally play it! Lone Survivor… sweet! And MHFU… well, I’ll just reserve it and download in case I get bored. Dead Nation.. doing the usual reserve so when I get a PS4, I’ll download it.

Still playing inFamous 2 from the PS+ backlog from last year XD Yes, that’s HOW awesome PS+ is: it gives you games that just drag you back for more. Man, I haven’t even got to download Remember Me, Vanquish or even Binary Domain yet! XDDDDDD

  • The Watcher

i just beat Tales of Graces f and got my feet wet in the god of war Saga. my backlog will never be finished.

  • LustEnvy

I have TR for PC AND PS4. Those who have never experienced this wonderful, now is the time. Good job with PS Plus, Sony.

  • psfam

I already own all of the games except MH, but is a good month for anyone that doesn’t have them. Thomas Was Alone was a simple, yet really good, fun puzzle game.

  • Aushe

its all fun and everything unless you already have the game -_-
