By Ishaan . March 14, 2014 . 11:31am

Patch 2.2 for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will be released later this month, and will be titled “Through the Maelstrom,” Square Enix announced this morning. The patch will include additions to the game’s main scenario, as well as new side story quests, dungeons and other features, which are outlined here.

Among the additions is a new raid event, titled “Second Binding Coil of Bahamut,” which Square Enix say is the highest level of difficulty available in the game.

A trailer for the patch can be viewed above. Patch 2.2 for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will be available on March 27th.

  • Aaahh, gotta get a PS4 for April’s release!!

  • This chapter of the game is looking to be epic. I can’t wait to experience the Leviathan fight head on. Also, all the new features are looking sweet. =^_^=

  • Tiael

Hell yeah, been playing since launch back in August, got a PS4 recently (inFAMOUS: Second Son), and will be doing the free upgrade to the PS4 version of this. Played the beta of it and definitely can’t wait for the enhanced visuals and better performance. It’ll be a bit later than patch 2.2, but hey.

  • Orpheus

They really are going all out with these updates. Can’t wait!

  • ZeroV3

That Diablos… Animation style all from FF8.. Weeeweeweee

  • Slickyslacker

That Gilgamesh sighting at the end, and “Battle on the Big Bridge”…

    …but where’s Enkidu?

  • Spirit Macardi

So is this also bumping up the maximum job level? Since this is adding more story quests, and the current story ends at level 50.

    • ♚ dr. brawler ♞

no, the item level will be increased. the overall level tho will happen whenever they decide to add more egis for the summoner… iirc.

      • Alestaos

Which has been stated that this will occur in the expansion. Though were already at like 95 item wise with Titan HM vs Relics so i guess this will even it out. Kinda hoping they dont make all my myth gear useless.

        • Naryl

It won’t be useless, you will need to be as close to possible to full ilevel 90 to get the new content done. Ofc this depends a lot on the fight but if the mechanics of twintania continue in the rest of the fights you will probably need more than 4,2-4,5k hp to survive some of the AOE you are forced to take.

  • ♚ dr. brawler ♞

really hype for those new coil turns, GARDENING for my FC home and FABULOUS ADVENTURES with hildibrand!
also retainers get to go out and fetch stuff for you!

  • The Moogmare Before Christmas.

  • Ardus

Heh it seems like leviathan is gonna have a theme with lyrics kinda like titans.
    should be interesting.

  • Why does Gilgamesh’s Armor/Clothes look like if they were made with Papier Mâché?

  • Prinnydoom

Damn. This is looking better each and every day. Now if you’ll excuse me the music for the leviathan battle needs to be listened to again.

I want this game to stay and hope that Square-Enix doesn’t add classes for the sake of being in there cause it’s in Final Fantasy, they have to take cue from WOW and make sure the classes do have some use otherwise it will end up on the MMO scrap heap cause half the classes are complete useless and no one will care.

Examples: Everquest has about a billion classes with only 7 that are useful

    • Naryl

While I do agree with you, in this game you aren’t forced to create a new character just to level up a new class (requiring a new character slot as well), so it not THAT big of a problem if a job is not 100% viable at the begining (can be fixed later), many people would level it anyway just to have it at 50.

Also there are quite a few roles still not covered with the actual roster. For example in melee DPS there’s a serious lack of THF, with probably some sort sneak attack, steal, and DEX based DPS armor (it could share armor with BRD). In ranged roles we have SMN as a DoT dps but there’s still room for a pure debuff/buffer class like RDM for example (I’d love to see Corsair tho).

After the needed ones there are the ones that fill similar roles but are cool to have just to get this game something the competition rarelly has: Samurai, Ninja, Blue mage, Dark Knight just to name a few.

      • Lucky Dan

I can easily think of roles for the classes you just put.

Samurai, Dark Knight => tank/dps classes
Ninja, Thief => melee dps classes
Blue Mage, Mimic => Secondary Classes (since they would be quite useless as primary)
Red Mage => debuffer, dual pistol weilding/rifle class (I don’t see why the Red Mage should have the sword there is 0 point after you have lancer, warr, monk, paladin, etc) + they would look cooler with a gun.

It’s nice to do fan like speculation and stuff but theres a few matters to consider. The first is new classes will only be coming in expansions, however new JOB stones will be applied to existing classes in patches (if possible.)

An example is the arcanist class. It has TWO different job stones, healing and dps, but they all use the same type of weapon (books). The other classes currently only have 1 job stone each and i would expect to see more of them with 2 stones each before a new class rolls around. This means they can keep the classes limited and useful, whilst expanding on the various schools of sword play, black magic, white magic etc. Adding a new weapon type, guild, base class is a lot of work. A job is just 5-8 new skills and some stat adjusting, plus they can start the quest line anywhere they want and dont require a guild.

Yoshida has (casually) said a few things already about this. Dark Knight will be added when a 2 handed sword class is added. Samurai/Ninja may come from a new eastern class whilst Red mage may be a combined job from Gladiator class and a mage. Yoshida’s current priority for classes is something rogue like and something ranged with guns. This is a long way off though. Red Mage and Blue Mage are Yoshidas fave jobs though and he’s told us he would like to add those job stones first. We have no idea how BLU would work in this new system and it may be utterly unexpected, but it certainly won’t be useless. They know what they’re doing. ^^

          • Lucky Dan

Of course, this is only game besides Lightning Returns and maybe even Bravely Default they have done some beta testing.

I believe they’ll get everything right and make sure every class is playable/useful in some way or another.

  • Neophoton

Just give me 2.2 already! :D

  • Ferrick
Dragoon’s new Artifact armor (concept art) looks kickass

    • 27sanderrm .

Do want will get when it is available.!! Also, holy crap!! Diablo!.

      • Ferrick

do note that this is just a concept art and may not be in game, but it’s going to be released at 27 March

        • Alestaos

          So alk AF2s will be?

    • Neophoton

As a Dragoon main, I approve of this.

  • Vash bane

i might have to try to get friendly in this game… I mean i’m going to force myself to do duty finder or what ever.

i’m too used to soloing in MMO’s ;'(

    • Naryl

Aside from Titan most fights are quite easy to get done using the duty finder. Most people has been doing them for quite a bit of time so everyone knows what to do. Also people tend to be friendly in the instanced dungeons to try to get a commendation :p.

  • Not sure if my eyes are playing tricks on me… but that suit of armor at the end of the hallway @6:31 looks a lot like van Darnus. o.O
