Iron Galaxy To Take Over Development Of Killer Instinct

By Ishaan . March 27, 2014 . 9:30am

Iron Galaxy Studios, the developer behind Divekick and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition, is the new team that will be working on Killer Instinct on Xbox One, going forward.

Iron Galaxy CEO Dave Lang shared the news with Polygon, describing the project as “probably the biggest thing we’ve ever done”.

Killer Instinct on Xbox One was originally developed by Double Helix, a studio which was recently acquired by Amazon. At present, Double Helix is completing work on Fulgore, the final character that will be available as part of the season 1 DLC for the game.

Alongside Fulgore’s development, Double Helix have also been bringing Iron Galaxy up-to-speed on Killer Instinct, which runs on the Hex engine, proprietary technology developed by Double Helix itself.

This is a brand-new engine, this is a brand-new process, and we’re just coming to terms with what’s possible," said Lang. In order to facilitate the learning process, around 10 Iron Galaxy staff members flew out to Double Helix earlier in March and spent a week at the studio.

Lang also shared that Microsoft had first gotten in touch with him about four months ago, about transitioning Killer Instinct’s development to a new studio, in light of the Double Helix acquisition, which hadn’t been made public at the time.

A good and well trusted choice by the fighting game community. People will have high expectations! and Dat FULGORE!

    • Shane Guidaboni

Ehh. Actually, a lot of people complained about 3rd Strike: OE. We had to get two patches before everything was fixed, and even then it’s still not as perfect as it could be.

The best choice Microsoft could have made. Nice.

  • Sperium3000

Oh wow… Not a bad pick.

  • Jungo

Obviously the first reaction is that Microsoft chose well, but I’d also like to point out how nice this is for Iron Galaxy as well, being their first non-port fighting game they’re working on that isn’t an original property. Shows that they’re gaining success on the business side as well.

    Diiivvee KICK!!!

  • neo_firenze

I’m skeptical that any developer could just step in and continue development on a completed game and have it turn out really well and feel like a natural fit. Iron Galaxy has some fighting game connections, but this is clearly not the same thing as working on ports of Capcom’s games.

Then again, prior to KI Double Helix also had no real experience with original fighting games and they did a nice job with KI. So I guess we’ll see…

Weird cause last night i had a odd dream where it was announced that Bethesda was going to take over…….Fulgore looks awesome though.

  • JMaster3000

The game looks so last gen for me.

    • NimbusStev

I was actually thinking the same thing while watching the video. It doesn’t look bad per se, but it just didn’t have the wow factor that next-gen games generally do. If I didn’t know better, I would have thought it was running on the Vita.

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

While I’m into Xbox, I hope things work out for the best regarding Killer Instinct. I wonder if the game will get a final boss? I hope we don’t see another KoFXII.

  • hazelnut1112

At least they worked on Third Strike Online.
Would have been a huge eyesore if they only worked on Divekick, ew…

    • doubleO7

They also did MvC: Origins and Darkstalkers Ressurection, so they’ve got a pretty decent track record for fighting games overall.

  • Kayriss Wins

Shout outs to Maximilian for the the video, thnx dood now I’m ever MORE hyped for Fulgore!

    • MrJechgo

Better stay on the look-out for his WEEK OF videos featuring Fulgore. He did for every character in the cast, including DLC Spinal, so…

      • Kayriss Wins

I know, I’ve been following Max’s work since he was a youngin’ starting off with crappy low quality 3rd strike vids lol.

  • NimbusStev

Ha, I watched some of the Dive Kick podcasts not too long ago, and this seems like a really cool bunch of guys. I’m glad for them! I know they’ll do a good job continuing the series.

  • MaskedHero99

    Fuck double helix fuck em

    • MrJechgo

      Blame Amazon for buying them…
