Emotions Are Your Weapons In This Cel-Shaded MMORPG

By Eugene . April 2, 2014 . 3:01pm

It isn’t just Japan that specializes in great-looking anime-style graphics. Korea has some, too, such as the cel-shaded third-person action title Soul Worker. Korean developer Lion Games have been working on the title for a good while now, and released a new trailer of their revamped game along with an expected release date for their open beta later this year.

I say revamped because doing a little research, we last looked at the title back in 2011. Some changes have gone in as can be seen from the above gameplay trailer—most notably the camera sticking to an over-the-shoulder perspective. Three characters are also unveiled, and if the general gist of the story is still the same, each weapon is powered by a specific kind of emotion.

First off, we get to see the claymore-ish Revenge-linked wielder of the Soulum Sword that looks like any other standard slashy-slashy sword.

There’s also a man wielding the Pleasure-linked dual-pistol/rifle/machine gun called the Gun Jazz.

Finally, there’s Madness-tinged Mist Scythe and her twin-tails.

There’s a lot of pretty fast action going on, and what appear to be skills set into hotbars on the bottom of the screen as well.

According to Lion Game’s main site the open beta on PC for Soul Worker is expected in the second quarter of 2014.

As much as I want to get hyped for this game I just can’t. It has a lot of things I want in an MMO but it probably won’t get localized and I don’t think they’ll do the F2P model well since the majority of MMOs don’t.

  • Zer0faith

Shame on you, that article pic made me think it was a Siliconera MMORPG where you use you Disqus account as your avatar…
    A gamer can dream.

    • GameTaco

      Open Thread Online?

  • Milewide

While the guy can sit comfortably on the rubble the girl is forced to slide down/fall so that she can conveniently show off her panties.

    Social commentary.

    • tubers

Clearly, the male has a suggestive pose with his gun between his legs and pointing at the girl’s navel.

    • Kari

why does the guy look so angry and bad ass like ?

  • Unlimax

Thankfully you guys notice that , I’m glad you notice that Eugene :3

  • Masa

Not a fan of these set characters and locked genders where you don’t get to create your own.

    • Kaetsu

I hated when Dragon Nest did it and I hate it now.

      • harmonyworld

I was about to say! I really hated that too.

    • Kumiko Akimoto

I like them a lot better because they have an overall story that includes the characters.

    • Seizui

….Yeah, I always consider this: If you have set characters and locked genders, it may as well be an offline game. MMOs should generally be about allowing you to be the character itself.

    • komiko12

But some of those games are popular like Elsword. These games’ characters usually have backstories of their own. It’s like playing JRPGs but online.

  • Hau To

What a coincidence. I just saw this trailer on a different site.

  • Kornelious

    ….Now THAT’S my type of MMORPG :)
But if only it had character creation…and was for something other than PC…..And was in english :(

  • tubers

Saw this yesterday.. reminiscent of vita games with those shots.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Goddamn this looks pretty good. Gonna check it out.
Too bad about no character creation like others have said but oh well.

  • MiyuEinzbern

Give us some Hammerstol and Chainblade love no?

  • Genjo

OMG! YOU guys CAN create YOUR own characters the Screenshots of both those girls and guy gameplay one screenshot of two girls are showing off how deep the custom is on creating your own characters one of the girls is to be a like anime girl character from anime show which i can’t remember right now lol

  • Genjo

    find it!
“Lion Games just released a new batch gameplay images of Soul Worker
Online that can be viewed below. As of the moment, the game has a very
simple and clean looking UI which is nice. Anime fans will actually
enjoy this game because they “might” be able to customize their
characters to look similar to the ones in the show. At least that what
it shows in the image below showing off Mirai Kuriyama from Kyokai No Kanata.”

  • Let the madness consume you. Mist Scythe for the win =^_^=

  • Captain Levi

Remove the “gender-lock” and add some more customization, thanks.
We’re in 2014, not 2003. I want to play as a male character while swinging a damn scythe, screw the gender lock.
(Overall the “general” style looks cool enough from my point of view.)

    • pekikuubik

2014 means higher expectations for graphics quality and character animation. Gender locking characters allows them to keep the budget in check. When the game’s out and making money, nothing’s stopping them from making opposite gender characters with similar concepts, assuming players are interested in them. Which is what Elsword is doing right now with Elesis, Add and future characters.

      • Captain Levi

I hope so, because I think the “gender lock” in a MMORPG is kinda lame. Or totally lame.
(Also for the slight customization, I mean… f%&#! it.)
I want my own character, not some kind of a preset.

        That’s just my thought anyway.

  • Varnes

Pretty sure i am not the only one thinking Rusty Hearts

  • Ferrick

gun jazz? sounds like it’s a good idea to play Cowboy bebop OST while playing as that class

    • Ni ~Algidus~

  • Ni ~Algidus~

I remember joking with a friend after we saw the first trailer back in 2012 saying that Lion Games are going to get sued if they don’t changer the font style of the logo; I also got a Summon Night+Persona+Ghost X vibe from the trailer.I got tired of Guild Wars 2. This one and Closers got my attention because they’re looking the type of MMO the can make me fall into that abyss again.
But I hope we get the option of selecting our own sex and emotion

  • Rogerrmark

  • Impressionnant

Why is every Korean game an MMO?

    • skittles

Good question actually. I can’t think of a single western release for a Korean game apart from MMOs. I assume they must make other games, but we certainly don’t see them.

    • darke

Would you prefer a RTS? Isn’t that the only two game types popular over there? :)

    • Godmars

Better question is how long do Korean MMO last. have to figure these rotate in and out of fan base interest.

  • Magus KilIer

That looked pretty good, there was some pretty decent comboing in some parts of the video
I hope you can play it with a controller, and in english

  • Mind0105A

pants-o-metre. My emotion is strong now.

  • Rudy Soto

Aww Man, what? What happened to that sweet HammerCannon and that Chainsaw weapons? And am I seriously forced to choose a female character if I want to wield a sword?

And what the hell happened to that sweet ass music from the original trailer?

  • Shady Shariest

I can all ready see it… Emo people forcing knives to wrists…
…What would feeling funny result in?

    • ronin4life

      Lots and lots of Bananas.

      • Shady Shariest

“You think Banana’s are your ally?”
        …Everyone turns into Copyright-claim-stickers.

  • natchu96

Yes, give the insane Madness girl the scythe! Totally safe.

. . . which is actually true, because only someone that’s mad would try to use a scythe as a practical weapon in real life, but since this is just rule of cool it’s probably pretty dangerous to our health.

  • That looks really damn cool

  • Finally some new’s about this… been waiting this game for over 3 years or more!

  • Vash bane

hm indeed looks better than it did before. but (I don’t remember much) what are the other two ladies weapons called from the first trailer?
