Tekken Won’t Be Left Out Of EVO 2014 After All

By Ishaan . April 4, 2014 . 4:01pm

For a while, it looked like the 2014 Evo Championships weren’t going to host any 3D fighting game tournaments. EVO’s line-up this year consisted entirely of 2D fighters, with no trace of Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive… or even Tekken.

Instead, EVO 2014′s line-up consisted of Ultra Street Fighter IV, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Killer Instinct, King of Fighters XIII and BlazBlue. A short while after the first six, Super Smash Bros. Melee was added to the list as well.

Luckily, Namco Bandai and controller manufacturer MadCatz appear to have stepped in to do something about the situation. Shoryuken reports that during a special presentation of iPlayWiner’s “The Fray!”, EVO co-founder Joey Cuellar came onto the program to make a special announcement—that Tekken Tag Tournament 2 was being added to the list of games.

Additionally, Namco Bandai themselves are going to be joining EVO as one of the event’s main sponsors this year. MadCatz founder Mark Julio is said to have played a role in this change of plans. Prior to Tekken Tag Tournament 2 being added to the official EVO line-up, Julio had also expressed interest in hosting an unofficial Tekken tournament at the MadCatz booth at EVO this year.

EVO 2014 will be held from July 11th – 13th at the Las Vegas Hotel and Casino.

I wonder if there is a chance for DOA5U to be in this event….

  • Guest

Sigh, DoA5U didn’t get through again. Are they still mad about that bikini stunt 5 (?) years ago?

    • JuiceKun

      What happened?

    • mikanko

It’s based primarily on how active the community is for these games, as they want games that will bring in more entrants. DOA5U doesn’t have an active tournament scene compared to the games that did get in, and it’s not more complicated than that.

  • kyrt

so wait Injustice is a 2D fighter?

    • EinMugenTenshin

The characters may be 3D, but the fighting stages are 2D without sidestepping, etc.

That said it is questionable that we don’t see more 3D fighters included here though, as it kinda works against innovation and diversity. 2D fighters can only do so much, where most of the ideas was done 10~15 years ago.

    • CptPokerface

3D models on a 2D plane, so yeah. People call it 2.5D normally.

      • Kaitsu

2.5D is usually 2D models on a 3D plane, actually. And mostly anything done in top view perspective as well.

        I.E Ragnarok Online.

        • Combo

“2.5D” is kind of a weird term which means different things to different people, and also sort of means nothing at the same time. Stuff like SFIV, Injustice and Smash Bros are just 2D fighters with 3D graphics.

        • Death Metal

2.5D would mean 3D graphics in a 2D plane in the fighting game genre, no exceptions. It’s a bit stupid to use this term because it mixes in graphics with gameplay, when these are actually distinct elements in a game. So when Siliconera says 2D, it means gameplay-wise.

  • AkuLord3

Not surprised that Tekken Tag 2 would make it in (sadly not Virtua Fighter…DAMN IT :L). So i got that, Melee, KOF and Blazblue to long forward to…with random side stuff

  • Time Sage

Now we just need some Soul Calibur in there too..

    • MaskedHero99

They need a good soul caliber game 5 sucked kinda

      • Death Metal

I never see people stating a reason why when they say that Soulcalibur V sucked. Why did it suck? It didn’t to me. It’s a very beautiful game with great characters and gameplay. I don’t get it.

        • Brandonmkii

It didn’t. People were just mad about no super crazy long story mode and no old characters.

          • DuskSharkEX

I would’ve liked to see team battle return…

          • Time Sage

….that’s exactly why many fans say it sucked. If you were a competivie player yeah, it was fine, but for the rest of us, who liked it for the deep and interesting world it had created and all the fun unlockables and interesting modes… It felt bland and boring.

          • Death Metal

It just did not have an awesome story mode, but still, saying it sucked, feels dismissive of all the other qualities that the game possesses. I think a lot of people make it easier to say it sucked for 1 or 2 flaws than to recognize the other 10 things it got right…

          • Time Sage

Like I said. The competitive side was great. But that wasn’t why I bought the game. For what I bought it for, I felt cheated and ripped off.

        • Abysswalker90

It was rushed beyond belief because Bamco pressured the developers to get the game out within a year.
SC used to have high standards, unlike every other modern fighting game out there. Elaborate story mode, many side missions and unlockables, all sorts of innovative single player and multiplayer modes that expand on the main story. It used to be much more than just a typical “Arcade/VS/Online” fighting game.

        • MaskedHero99

I dont like it (my reason is because )
Im a Yoshimtisu & mitusrugi (fuck his name) player and they took away half of his move list.and the moves I used to….gameplay for that game is fine no complaints

SC scene is getting less and less interesting over the years. alot of people didn’t even knew that it was in EVO 2k13

  • Hines Green III

Man I just got into DOA5U thanks to Core Fighters. My 9 month journey with this game has open my eyes to how deep it is. Shame others can’t see it too.

Oh well. KoF XIII, I don’t see how you are still at EVO but I’m not gonna complain lol

    • Kaitsu

KoF has always had a great competitive player base. Mostly Brazil though. KoF is also one my top fighters that I enjoy.

      • Hines Green III

My friend just told me it brings in a lot of international player and EVO likes that. I do like KoF XIII but living where I live and online being dead I never get to play it.

    • KingGunblader

KoF XIII was the most hype game at EVO last year, so I’m not too shocked it’s back.

      • Richard N

Everyone says that about every game. Not to pick on KOF, but talk to the right person and any game could’ve been the most hype.

        • Ryomou

Except that KOF XIII really was insanely hype, last year. I’m not even that big of a fan, but I have to admit…top 8 for that game was a blast to watch.

    • Amir

Totally. In my opinion, DOA5U is the best 3D fighter available right now. In any other fighting games, moves are executed one by one; like there are pauses between each move and that makes you vulnerable to your opponent attacks. in DOA5U, not only the mechanics are deep, but they’re also easy to learn.

It’s like your in total control of your character, and that makes the fights really smooth. You’re not giving commands to a character like in other games, but you’re completely controlling that character. The triangle system of the game along with its other mechanics bring so many variations to the fights. In the end, what you see on the screen is two intelligent persons fighting, not two sets of movelists being executed.

It’s not because of boobs that the game is not at EVO. MK is worse at that and it’s a regular. It’s because the fans are not supportive enough.

      • Death Metal

You mean MK is great at that* :P

No, but seriously, I’m with you on DOA5U. I really love the game and I’m sad with the lack of support from the community.

      • Demeanor

Also, I love how the various fighting styles are represented. Seeing Ba Ji Quan, Xing Yi Quan, Tai Chi Quan etc is really a joy for the eyes.

        • Death Metal

This also. The ninja styles are very well represented too.

  • MaskedHero99

    A 1000 likes

  • Daniel Bui

Hell yeah! Tekken is the best 3D fighter to be included! Although I still think they need more variety like Virtua Fighter.

  • Ni ~Algidus~

Now that Namco washed Wizard’s hands of course it will be at EVO

  • KingGunblader

I’m kind of surprised UMvC3 is still on the lineup. I figured licensing issues with the newly Disney-owned Marvel would cause issues there.

    • Ninjagoon

Its ok for them to play the game and stuff, its just that Capcom can’t do anything with it until they get the license back.

  • The Watcher

i don’t see why not, i mean if BB can make it. surely anything can.

  • RichyGaming

“Instead, EVO 2014′s line-up consisted of Ultra Street Fighter IV, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Killer Instinct, King of Fighters XIII and BlazBlue.”

lol, I guess BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma is a mouthful. Its good enough to have it on EVO though :)

  • SDDMN

I’m just hoping there won’t be a big problem with Melee this year. Then again if there was, we’d hear about it by now, wouldn’t we? Anyways, I’m looking forward to Tekken Tag 2 this year along with Melee.
