By Spencer . April 10, 2014 . 11:30pm

Konami shared a new video that shows how different components come together to create Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. Snake’s opening greeting has motion capture recording, a wireframe, specular lightning, facial capture for the voice over and finally the scene. Even the guard dog that barks at Snake has motion capture work done for it.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is out nor for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

    Anyway thats pretty darned impressive

Dang this video is impressive. I haven’t played the game yet, but hell, Kiefer Sutherland voiceovers freakin’ suck.

I think Kiefer Sutherland did a pretty good job, it’s a different interpretation, maybe more realistic performance instead of dramatic? I do miss David Hayter and it would take a while getting used to the new voice. Jpn still using Ootsuka Akio though so it’s more consistent..

I always love to see these behind the scene videos like voice session or mo-cap.. even the pooch has mo-cap lol.. collected all the 9 XOF patches, need to finish the Raiden mission later.. short but great game.

I actually like Sutherland’s performance much more than Hayter’s, mainly because he has a wide range of intonations; Hayter’s dub, while it could be argued as being “distinct”, has only a limited range in comparison. While that’s not a problem in casual conversations, the lack of emotion is quite noticeable in, say, lines that are obviously supposed to express surprise or anger. The delivery of how either of them reads the line “Kept you waiting, huh?” is pretty much a good showcase of the difference.

yeah, I do like Sutherlnad too, but it just felt weird after all these years to have a change of VA.. Regardless of who gives a better or more appropriate performance, David Hayter was the official Eng Snake up until now for countless MGS games, just like Ootsuka Akio. and when Sutherland said “kept you waiting huh?”, it felt a bit ironic and I was like, I wasn’t waiting for “you”, was waiting for Hayter to be back :) I just think Hayter’s is more dramatic while Sutherland has a more subdued and naturally deep voice, perhaps not unlike Ootsuka Akio, could be Kojima’s reason for this change, not sure. I mean, sure, many movie chars have been played by diff actors like Batman live action by Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, etc, even voices for animated series and games, but Kevin Conroy still felt like “Batman” (same for Mark Hamill for the Joker), and so far we have not heard any other person voicing Snake except David Hayter, so it was iconic and memorable (same for Nozawa Masako voicing Goku all these years, and now even in Kai Buu).

It’s probably subjective to say who’s better, but I miss Hayter’s Snake, especially now I go back to play Peacewalker HD. and when everyone else like Raiden, Otacon, Miller, etc still have the same VAs. In general, I don’t like established chars changing VAs unless the original actor cannot come back for the role like passing away (like Netero for Hunter x Hunter, RIP)

Oh, don’t get me wrong: I’m not saying whose performance is superior/inferior. Hayter’s voice has always been nice; it’s just that a wider variety of intonations is what I’ve always wanted to hear in his performance for a long time, and now Sutherland pops up filling that wish of mine.

        • AzureRyuujin

Sorry if this causes problems, but I feel Hayter’s voice fits Solid Snake more, whereas Sutherland’s fits Big Boss. My reasoning is they shouldn’t have had the same voice to begin with due to how cloning works in this universe.

          • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

Perhaps, but personally, I don’t particularly care about which voice actor takes over from which point; I’d be satisfied with a well-intoned and -expressed performance. And it’s not like the prospect of Big Boss’ voice changing as he grew old hasn’t ever been there to begin with.

          • AzureRyuujin

Exactly what I’m getting at here actually. Thanks for your feedback you two.

          • Aoshi00

Yeah, but if that were the reason, they shouldn’t have cast Hayter as the Big Boss in MGS3 and PW to begin with.. Now it feels like Kojima doesn’t think David Hayter is fit for the job anymore while the Jpn cast still has Ootsuka Akio as both Solid Snake and the Big Boss, in GZ and PR. If the Jpn actor was changed too, then it would mean they don’t want both Snake and Big Boss sounding the same, but that’s not the case. Kojima most likely thinks Sutherland sounds more “realistic”, since everything is aiming to be more realistic. But it’s a pity because everyone else retains the same cast. Huey and Otacon also right? Also the Jpn cast actually voices multiple characters throughout the series, Inoue Kikuko being Rosemary, the Boss, Sunny, and Chico, as an example.

I don’t know, Hayter may have the campier war hero voice, but he is Snake. Whenever I hear Sutherland in GZ it offends me. Especially when he talks to Kaz and Huey, who still have their normal voices. But anyway, lets talk about how awful Skull Face’s voice is.

        • Aoshi00

Yeah I’m just so attached to both the Eng and Jpn cast, it felt like a different person conversing w/ Kaz & Huey after Peacewalker, just inconsistent. Like Batman, Bruce Greenwood was ok in Red Hood and another guy again for Arkham Origins, but I still want Kevin Conroy if possible and he’s coming back for the latest game. It’s espeically weird when Sutherland said “kept you waiting” which was supposed to bring back nostalgia after MGS4 & PW, my immediate reaction was you’re new and just got on board, the old guy we’re accustomed to and grown to love for over a decade didn’t get to come back lol. anyway, not thrilled about changing the main char’s voice, but can’t be helped and we just need to get used to it.. Paz and Chico have the same VAs too.. hm.. not sure about Skull Face, he sounded pretty menacing in the tapes :) I just don’t want a change in long time cast unless the VAs really can’t reprise for the role due to retirment or passes away, should respect the actors and fans.

I don’t know if it sucks, and i will probably grow to like it, but as of now, i really hate it. mostly beacuse i was used to David Hayter, but i also simply don’t like this one, i mean, it was no Hayter but i liked the one they gave Big Boss on MGS4, this one just felt off from the moment i first heard it.
