Super Smash Bros. Director Explains Greninja’s Crazy Teleport Move

By Ishaan . April 14, 2014 . 11:00am

At the end of last week’s Super Smash Bros. Nintendo Direct, director Masahiro Sakurai revealed Greninja from Pokémon X/Y as a playable character in the game. Today, Sakurai provided the first tidbit of information on Greninja’s move set.

“Greninja’s sophisticated moves are extremely fun to use once you get used to how it controls,” Sakurai wrote on Miiverse, alongside the screenshot above.

In a follow-up comment, he explained, “The side special attack Shadow Sneak is a move that makes Greninja suddenly disappear and ambush opponents. If you press and hold the button, Greninja will move a greater distance. Another unique feature is you can move Greninja around freely while charging up.”

In case you haven’t already, you can see Greninja in action in the video below.

Can’t say I’m thrilled about YET ANOTHER pokemon. Have they really run out of characters?

    • Timovisch

A pretty popular Generation 6 pokemon among the fans. It think it sort of resembles a ninja / frog creature.

    • Chris Yuen

It’s freaking Greninja! Best Gen 6 starter IMO. My Smash Bros 3DS purchase is pretty much settled once I saw him. Hopefully there’s a shiny palette for him to swap to.

      Here’s mine: https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/t1.0-9/1461379_10151762868859632_124679378_n.jpg

      • Evil-Antho

I hate you so much for having a shiny Greninja! -O_O- not really. ^^ seriously though taht’s super lucky! I’ve completed my national dex for about 2 months now and my intense unluckyness with shiny pokemon keeps going. the only 2 shinies I got in X were a Lampent in the friend safari and more recently an oddish while hunting for a shiny honedge. the thing is that I already had a shiny vileplume and a shiny chandelure in white ._.

      • andref

I’m surprised you never nicknamed that thing, its so cool I couldn’t help calling mine hanzo hattori or something similar. I just have a preference for nicknaming shiny pokemon (hard work needs a special name)

        • MVRK HNTR

I would love a shiny Greninja myself. Reminds me of Hotsuma from the PS2 Shinobi games (what with the black “skin” on Greninja with the red tongue scarf).

I nicknamed my Greninja “Hayabusa” in honor of my favorite video game ninja.

      • Narrator 1

That thing is Shiny AND has its Hidden Ability that absolutely blows the other Starter abilities out of the water (no pun intended). Either you’re an awesome breeder, you’ve got connections to one, or you’re insanely lucky. Which one is it? Inquiring minds want to know.

Because you know, there weren’t many Pokemon in the other Smash games.
I count 2 in the original Smash. 4 in both Melee and Brawl. So far for Smash 4, we are at 4 without mentioning that Jigglypuff will more than likely return. How is that a lot from a roster of over 30?

The Mario series is by far the most represented in Smash, 6 so far announced for Smash 4 and Wario hasn’t even been confirmed if he’ll be returning nor have they announced someone entirely new (I’m also not including Donkey or Diddy Kong in the 6 confirmed).

Far too many people have complained about the Pokemon representation in Smash 4 and yet it’s not any different from how the Zelda or Mario series is treated, imo.

      • leingod

Wasn’t there a Pokemon trainer also? It had 3 Pokemon of its own at least.

        • KHSoraKeyBlade

I counted Pokemon Trainer as one character because that’s what he was on the character select.

      • Namuro

Exactly! There are loads of characters from the Mario series in there, and no one says anything. But adding in one more new Pokemon, and people start to have a fit.

        • leingod

Actually, I wasn’t thrilled about the inclusion of Rosalina either. Maybe they haven’t ran out of characters, but they definetely ran out of franchises :P

          • Namuro

They still have loads of other series to draw the characters from, but then again, they have to bring out the popular characters to please the fans. Other than that, I have no idea what is their filtering process, as to decide which characters make it in or not.

Also, I think Rosalina is one of the best new characters from the Mario series lately. I used her all the time in Mario Kart. So I’m super thrilled that she’s in the game! Her play-style is pretty interesting, too!

          • Aisha Lee

Little Mac, Wii Fit Trainer, and the Villager would like to have a word with you.

          • leingod

I wonder why? I think those were great inclusions, I’m not complaining about those :P

      • http://danierc-polloconpapas.tumblr.com/ Eduardo Rocha

Well, Wario has his own series now and Yoshi too. So the only characters I count from the Mario series are Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser. Am I missing someone else? Maybe Rosalina could count too but the Galaxy series were really different from other games so I don’t know :/

        • Kayriss Wins

Rosalina is considered a member of the Mario Series cuz she has the Mushroom symbol next to her on the official site.

        • Herok♞

Remember Yoshi’s Island is Super Mario World 2 and in all his games he has a baby mario with him so he isn’t his own thing.

        • KHSoraKeyBlade

I counted Yoshi and Wario because that’s where they spawned from. They may have their own games now but they are still from the Mario franchise.

Rosalina totally counts as the Galaxy series is still a Mario series.

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

      Pikachu, Lucario, Charizard and Greninja.
No they haven’t run out characters. They just used some of them in Assist Trophy such as Saki and Starfy for new IP representation in Smash.

      • Kayriss Wins

Wow so there’s gonna be atleast 5 playable Pokemon characters, because Jiggly Puff is without a doubt gonna be in the roster too since she’s a veteran.

I will use and master him. Hope he has a white color :D

  • Izzeltrioum

Keroro, you used to be green D:

At least you got thy Hae ohgee back.

    • PotatoPower

the battle system looks just like destiny r o.o

      • Namuro

Guess who made the game? ;)

    • Hau To

I remember playing this game. Good times.

  • Jettythesunfish

    So as it stands….

    Standard B- Water Shiruken
    Side B- Shadow Sneak
    Down B- Substitute (presumably)
    Up B- ???

Can anyone fathom a guess? I’m pretty sure it was that zig-zagging move he did in the trailer. Might be Aqua Jet, but it doesn’t seem to learn that.

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

Up B is Hydro Pump and Final Smash is Night Slash. Aqua Jet covers the Pokemon Body and Hydro Pump inXY comes from Greninja hands.

  • colorblindnightmare

At least they are making great poke picks. Greninja looks like he’ll be fun to pick up.

  • subsamuel01

Glad Greninja made the cut, hes in my top 30: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kqd_z3QU0pM

  • Ricardo C

I thought he was gonna say something like “This move was inspired by Hayabusa from DOA” I would have bought that. Greninja would be Hayabusa’s Pokemon. I have a friend who nicknamed him Hayabusa.

    • 하세요

I see him as Strider more than Hayabusa.

  • Symbol de Au

After the first couple hundred or so of these little guys, shit gets crazy. XD
