In our last report on Unity-Chan, we got a look at how Unity Japan came up with the idea of their new mascot. Now that we know the story behind the character, 4Gamer shows us exactly how she’s used by developers using the Unity engine.

First, you’d have to download Unity-Chan’s 3D data from the official website, which can then be used for various games with the Unity engine and applications.

Once you have her up, you’ll be able to try out various parts and demo scenes with Unity-Chan. Here’s a look at some examples of shadows and their quality levels:

Fast and Simple.

004 005

Good and Beautiful.

006 007

Fantastic and Brilliant.

If you’re wondering what’s going on with Unity-Chan’s sleepy-looking eyes on the left image, it seems to be something that happens after doing a package import, which can be fixed through the UnityEditor. This is a bug that will be fixed in a future update.

Using the ARPoseTest, you can check out various poses with Unity-Chan, and simple movements such as running demos with the Locomotion.

Next is a series of images using the Nav Mesh Example, where you basically click at a location, and you’ll have Unity-Chan move towards it while avoiding obstacles, just to get an idea of what it’s like seeing Unity-Chan in a game that’s currently being tested out.

You can also make her show up in the Car Tutorial, used for making racing games, stunt games, or just to have a vehicle in any game you’re working on:

According to 4Gamer, Unity’s animation system, known as Mechanim, continues to grow, and they expect indie game developers to have a lot of fun with that in the near future. They also hope to see other developers give Unity-Chan a try, whether it’s for looking at sample, animation patterns, or just for the fun of it.

Current and future game developers using the Unity game engine, can download Unity-Chan, here.

Cool, its looks pretty interesting (in one way it reminds me of MMD but way better).

    • http://www.unit03.net blackraen

The analogy is actually pretty good, only in the other direction. MMD is actually much like one of these game development suites only with very large limitations in terms of models, scripting, pathing, etc.

Unity does seem interesting and it will be fun to see how it plays out for devs. The innate path mapping (Nav Mesh) sounds really interesting but prone to buggy AI behavior.

The biggest concern would be about how adjustable and tunable the built in modules will be, since most game developers will need something that isn’t provided base and will have to implement new or tweak existing to fit to need.

      • Taylor Davis

I agree, I have used MMD (for a while) and I learned quite a bit about how to move the model and so(and deal with weird Deviantart rules, when it came to models 0.o). After a little while using it, you felt like your doing the same thing, moving it,making dance and/or other things, download models, etc.

Where unity looks like those type programs(maybe not the greatest example; gmod, etc) where you have a little bit more freedom but you still get that, “buggy AI behavior”. That’s not a bad thing its kinda the same (in some factors).

  • notentirelythere

Bubsy 3D remade with Unity-chan. Let’s make it happen, people.

  • Suicunesol

Looking at articles like this makes me want to become a game developer.

    • darke

Unity is free to download, play around with, and even publish (though it does show a ‘unity3d’ splash screen at the start of the game if you haven’t got a purchased copy the ‘pro’ version); so other then lack of time (or I guess lack of a computer?) there’s no reason you can’t download it and try to make a game. :)

  • WyattEpp

Can we give her…you know, pants?

    • M’iau M’iaut

She’s auditioning for the next season of Vividread.

      • WyattEpp

That show felt like a major failed ambition. It had sparks of… inspiration? But every time it tried to go anywhere, it went all Vividass.

why? they world would have been a better place without pants

Obviously you have never been to a nudist beach before.
After I am positive that thought you have will change.
Most people look better in clothes rather than out of them.

I would post a picture from a real life nudist beach but I think it would get me banned……………………
But I did smile a bit at your post.

        • CirnoLakes

While I don’t neccessarily think that less clothes is better.

I don’t necessarily think that the nake body of any sort is ever a bother to look at. It doesn’t matter if they’re attractive to me or not, it’s not particularly bothersome.

I’ve never understood how some people become upset by people they don’t find attractive showing off their bodies. And it’s often used as an excuse for body shaming.

Like, someone who is pro-nudity or body showing, and then someone says something like “but you haven’t seen this really fat person wearing/not-wearing this.” And I think, “huh?”. Because I don’t understand why it’s a big deal. I understand if people are attracted to what they are, but that just seems like extreme fat shaming.

That’s not what you said, but that just seems like an example. It’s not like seeing the human body should ever be horrible to look at. It’s just the human body. And there’s nothing natural about being upset by seeing it. It’s cultural, and for much of human history, many people have been naked, and many still are very naked.

We started making clothes for utility and social reasons. To stay warm, to hold objects, to show off social status and so forth. But they aren’t always necessary. And we really don’t need them in many situations, but we’ve learned to treat the human body as taboo and inherently sexual. It doesn’t have to be, though. And there shouldn’t be anything really bothersome about seeing someone naked.

          • revenent hell

I’m an artist and have drawn more naked bodies of people than one could possibly see in a year but that doesn’t mean I want to walk around going about my day seeing phalluses, vagina’s and breasts.

I don’t care how attractive or not a person is. There are things in this world that should remain private and I think those things are it. There’s a time and place for everything and complete nudity is one of those things the reasons for wearing clothes at all, humans are no longer cavemen and in this day and age those reasons are moot because its no longer acceptable for a great deal of reasons and can get a person arrested or in some countries killed off or imprisoned for life.

Maybe its because I did grow up with a majority of nudists that I feel this way but who knows honestly its just one of those things that hit me in a really weird moral level.
Its called modesty and people should learn more about it because now a days it seems few people actually have it.

Don’t get me wrong I have “flashed” people and streaked and lord knows as a child my mother couldn’t keep me in clothes but over time I have come to the conclusion I would just rather not be forced to see someone’s privits (I did the privits word deliberately) against my will.

          • CirnoLakes

It’s not a good thing that people can go to jail and that many people suffer severe consequences for being naked.

I think that your feelings as socially influenced. And personally, I think they’re a rather unfortunate aspect of society and culture. There’s no good reason why, as far as I am concerned at least, why the naked human body should be a taboo and needs to be a private matter.

And your definition of “modesty” seems to me quite overrated. I’ve never understood this definition of “modesty” and why being naked would mean a lack of it. It isn’t as if being naked or showing your body means that you’re boasting about it.

And is seeing genitals really that awful? I’ve never understood the taboo and why it could or should bother someone.

I think that there are a lot of terrible and horrible things to see that I would never want to see. But nudity is not one of them. Again, it’s just the human body. There’s nothing that should be offensive or upsetting about it. There’s nothing offensive or inherently sexual about the naked human body.

And where draw the line anyway? Why draw the line at things like breasts? I don’t think that breasts are inherently more sexual than any other body part. This also seems cultural. At one point in time, the naked back or ankles were seen as very sexy and taboo. But in most of the Western world we’ve moved past that. And what about people who cover almost their entire bodies?

I think that people should be free to cover as much of their bodies as they want. Whether it is all of their body, or none of it. And I don’t think there’s anything modest or immodest about how much of your body you cover. And if anything, I think that more people should be comfortable and confident in their bodies, no matter what kind of shape they are.

          • revenent hell

Yes, peoples genitals are bad I don’t want to see some 80 year old grandma’s labia’s flapping in the wind when she bends over.

I would like to keep up this discussion since I find it fun but I am terribly sorry as it has been a long day at work and I just don’t have the typing ability to continue any more unless its a snarky remark.

Though think of this if I might add before I take a well earned nap. There are pedophiles in the world. Would you really want someone you loved or your own child exposed to them in this naked world? Where it makes it so much easier to do inappropriate acts without consequence since being naked wouldn’t violate any law? I’m not saying those “acts” wouldn’t be law breaking but it would make them easier to do.

Edit: I shall attempt to make a better argument later if you are willing ?.. I just cant think coherently yet.

          • CirnoLakes

“Yes, peoples genitals are bad I don’t want to see some 80 year old grandma’s labia’s flapping in the wind when she bends over.”
I don’t understand why it should bother you or anyone that much. There’s nothing offensive about it.

And people are going to be attracted to people who cannot consent, whether or not they’re naked. I don’t think that a decrease in nudity taboo would increase sexual hurtfulness on any group.

I also don’t think it would make things particularly easier. People definitely can and do sexually violate and harm others with the presence of clothing.

          • revenent hell

“I don’t understand why it should bother you or anyone that much. There’s nothing offensive about it”

Its offensive simply because I don’t wish to see it. Im not willing to see it so it being done against my will is what does make it offensive. If people could legally get away with walking around the world naked its forcing those whom don’t wish to see or participate in such a thing to do so. Its damaging to my psyche to have to see something of someone I do not wish to without having a way to defend myself against it.
And please don’t say I wouldn’t have to look because even if one tried not to that only works if someone is close to you, at a distance you would still see all unless one excelled at the art of watching the sky while being perfectly capable of driving and walking ect .

Its damaging to see things and be forced to experience them that a person is not willing to. Not all people would willingly want this type of thing.
Granted that could be said for a lot of things in life that people don’t “wish” to see but I find viewing a person naked whom I have no desire or want to see naked just as violating as someone car jacking me.
If people are fine with exposing themselves fine so be it but most people would rather not have to see anyone not of their choosing naked.

      Pants are overrated.

        But pantsu are not.

But at this rate, Witches will go on Strike!

Im shocked. I did not see one picture of her labia outlines……. What is the anime girl world coming to when you don’t get underwear camel toe? Sorry I mean “swimsuit bottoms”.

Good, good. It is vitally important to keep on-message there. :P

sooo <.< this will be something like the next vocaloids or something? she already has a gang coming as well right?

    • darke

Very geeky vocaloids? Everyone and their dog ‘knows music’ even if they can’t carry a tune without strangling it. Programming is a little more specialised. :/

  • Callonia

Hands down, best article of Siliconera for 2014.
I spent one hour running around playing unitychan just now. And I had FUN!
Feel like a little kid again.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

Until you write shaders and script……..

      • darke

This is one of the benefits of unity (even though I can’t say I like the toolset much myself), is that it’s easy to just get in and play around at the beginning, so people then have some incentive to learn to write shaders and script…

At which point they start tearing their hair out. :P But they remember how much fun they had just fooling around with it at the beginning so they persist until they get good enough to use the more complex things effectively. :)

      • Callonia

        Oh well that’s life.

  • CirnoLakes

I would like certain parts of her design if they were.. different.

But I’m happy that many people in Japan, including Japanese otaku and hobbyists are embracing Unity.

  • dnekolot

anyone here having problems with importing her? I get a fatal error everytime, and I have to manually delete her from the directory to make my project work again :/

    • Guest

Make sure Unity is open first. Then double click on the package file.

      • dnekolot

I just realized that it is not compatible with older versions. I tried it with 4.3.4 and it’s working fine.

  • Kornelious

Still a bit confused about Unity even after an explanation…But Unity-Chan is still so adorable <3

    • darke

Unity is a set of tools and programming languages, more-or-less orientated around the philosophy if making it easier to make games and making it easier to port games to different platforms.

One major feature is that it’s free, or relatively cheap for smaller development team licences where other engines such as Unreal are too expensive (though that’s changing recently too), so it’s most interesting to indie devs and Japanese developers who work in small teams to produce a game, rather then hundreds of developers like most ‘big publisher’ western titles do.

      • Kornelious

So basically it makes porting, localizing and making games easier?

        • darke

Yes. Porting and making games easier definitely. The localising part though should be ‘easy’ provided they use the tools the right way; unfortunately there seems to be a pattern of Japanese developers not properly writing the code so the tools can be used effectively (at least with traditional coding).

Granted it’s more of a problem with any developers who make a game in a single language; they need to go back and rewrite a lot of the string/message handling code so that translations are easy to do.

  • Kai2591

I need a real game with graphics like Unity-chan’s…
