Dark Souls II 25% Off Still Available, Pre-Order Bonus Unlock Trick

Update: 5/29: Dark Souls II released about a month ago on PC, the original 25% pre-order discount is over, but deals are only getting better. Check here for the latest Dark Souls II deals

Its about 2.5 days since Dark Souls II has been unlocked on Steam for PC gamers and for a solid day there was only ONE person that have finished the game (I actually had assumed the speedrun community would be bigger for Dark Souls II). As of today’s count, about 55 players have cleared the game and total death counts in-game clocks in at around 6.5 million. I’m not sure what to take from those numbers beyond another reinforcement that the game is hard – which ya’ll know already.

While the nicer graphics is all fine and dandy, this isn’t to say that Dark Souls II launched without problems on the PC. Quite a number of players have experienced crash on launch, and there are a number of unofficial fixes circulating on the Steam community forum.  You can probably already hear the jokes: “The game is so difficult you can’t even launch to play it.”

From the fixable crash scenarios, it looks like most have to deal with higher-resolution and refresh rate (ironically enough). If you set resolution to too high of a setting you may experience a crash, and for certain hardware configs with monitors above 60 Hz,you’ll need to scale down the refresh rate. So much for not limited to 1080p and all the glorious benefit of playing on PC?

Anyways, if you want to buy the game, it’s still available for 22% off at GMG only $39. Use coupon code QUK706-XWFKI6-8UK3NL

Wait, what do you mean this is the worst sales pitch ever? Come back! I also have non-remastered editions of Resident Evil 4 for sale! Only $39.99!

On a serious note, the original Dark Souls PC port savior has a few nice mods already available for Dark Souls II that you should check out. For those that have “missed out” on the pre-order bonuses for Dark Souls II (aka “sales gimmick” as a From Software developer notes in the DLC license file) — apparently all you have to do to unlock the pre-order weapon bonuses is to simply create a file name “license05.bin” and place it in your “Dark Souls II\DLC\License” folder. Some more details about this unlock trick can be found in this reddit thread.

While you can always unlock the pre-order weapons eventually, the Homunculus Mace is apparently a solid choice if you want to give a go at a speedrun. You can claim the title of being one of the first 100 people to clear Dark Souls II on the PC! Yay?
