Super Smash Bros. Screenshots Highlight Minor Changes And Polish

By Ishaan . April 28, 2014 . 9:00am

Last week’s screenshots of Super Smash Bros. highlighted a couple of minor changes being made to the game. Director Masahiro Sakurai pointed a few of these out over Miiverse.

Alongside the above screen, Sakurai wrote: “For the first time in the Smash series, Beam Swords will feature graduated colors. The attack item on the left is the Fire Bar. This is a peculiar weapon that becomes shorter after each swing.”

Sakurai: “Yoshi’s Egg Throw now leaves a rainbow trail, and we’ve improved the pose Samus strikes when she fires the Paralyzer. Every staff member is working hard as we brush up whatever we can.”

is charizard trying to eat waddle dee?

    • Tg

      Yep. Looks like it. :(

  • Tg

Taste the rainbow, Yoshi! <3 Huuuu!

  • Kroz

still the screenshot of megaman’s final smash gives me chills.

  • andref

    Hungry? grab a waddle dee

  • D. Collins

Waddle Dee is such a funny name

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I love the sword item simply for throwing

  • DoctorButler

Too bad Snake was cut. He’d also eat Waddle-Dee.

    • CozyAndWarm

Kojima/Konami could stop snubbing Nintendo systems for MGS games, it’d be easy to get him back in.

    • idrawrobots

      “That’s a Waddle-Dee, Snake.”
Snake: “Hmmm, what’s it taste like?”

    • God

I really wanted Snake, and if Snake doesn’t come back it means the chances of other awesome characters like Gray Fox or Ocelot are now below zero…

    • ronin4life

He isn’t really cut. I had heard He wouldn’t have even been in Brawl if Kojima hadn’t asked personally.

And IIRC, Sakurai said he hasn’t been asked this time.

  • Sabin1936

WTF is going on with Samus’s waist there… does she have no ribs or internal organs??

    • cklambo

She can turn into a ball, are u really surprised?

    • Kumiko Akimoto

It’s already been said that exaggerated poses are needed for fast animation especially since this game is so cartoony in nature every character gets broken like this.

      • http://themulti-classinggamer.blogspot.com/ Supergamesniper9

        Wide hips = very fertile.

        All I gotta say.

        • Kumiko Akimoto

What does that have to do with anything

          • zaidandzhadow

Mm you know cause she’s many fans sexy dream?

          • Göran Isacson

That fans care more about Samus looking “sexy” than anatomically correct, I would say.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

I’m pretty sure that no one who just wants to play the game cares about that, the people complaining about her being too sexy obviously care about what she’s dressing more then how the game will be.

          • Göran Isacson

I would argue one can only look at these comments, with fans saying “she’s their sexy dream” and how wide hips means very fertile. Granted, perhaps I should have been specific: a group of quite vocal fans seem to care more about Samus looking sexy than anything else, and get very upset when people call out how Samus is getting progressively more dolled up with skin-tight outfits and high heels by the designers. They are complaining because a character they like is being treated in a somewhat skeevy way by the designers, so I would say they complain precisely BECAUSE they care.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Or a specific group of people don’t wanna hear useless whining that strips away samus’s character because she’s wearing heels and cat suit. Something that has been apart of her design before. That and it’s not even her only design in this game.
Maybe if you get your eyes off her ass things will be fine.

          • Göran Isacson

Ha ha, oh wow. I mean, I have mentioned nothing of ogling her ass, there’s a mileswide difference between outfits she briefly wears in ending images and outfits worn throughout a whole game, in combat and being portrayed as one of her “main” outfits AND the comments from Supergamesniper and zaidandzhadow are key examples of everything I’ve stated so far.

BUT I can guess you can only lead a horse to water, not get it to drink. Stay classy.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Dude she’s had this out for 5 games, and it’s canon out of the suit wear. It’s not any different from what she usually wears. The only change is the big rocket fuel heels. Random shit two people say in one comment does not prove anything.
It doesn’t change the fact that the people who complain about the outfit are the ones who also make it seem more sexual then it is nor does it change the fact that they erase everything she is to make her look like she’s being portrayed as a life blow up doll.

          • http://themulti-classinggamer.blogspot.com/ Supergamesniper9

Just making an anatomy point while everyone else flips shit on sex appeal.

            Dance puppets dance.

  • David García Abril

So, the beam sword was a Sith lightsaber in the first two games, a Jedi one in “Brawl” and now it’s… both?

  • MrJechgo

    A left-handed Link? Wow, been a while since I saw that :P
(Link got changed from left to right-handed in Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword due to the motion controls)

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

Link with a lightsaber is a happy Link :) Also, I don’t understand the complaints I have heard about Samus and her boots. She is looking badass in this game.

    • http://www.ihasnowebsitez.com Satonaka CP-Four

Half of them being somewhat legit claims with somewhat of an actual argument… and the other half are just bored tumblr posters with nothing better to do that to cause problems via their “gender equality” and whatever schtick they got going on now in their circle type of arguments that hold close to no water.

Either way, the complaints can be ignored because it’s Nintendo; they don’t mean anything bad by it, it’s just an aesthetic change to Samus and the complaints are simply trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.

The fact that the argument was never even presented when Peach showed up in melee nullifies it. Yeah yeah Peach is a princess so it’s justified and Samus is a bounty hunter so it aint, yadda yadda… anyways back to real news: this game is gonna rock so when is the release date :P

“So if Zero Suit Samus is fanbait for guys, where is the fanbait for girls? Why isn’t Captain Falcon wearing a thong or sporting a chest twice the size of his last model? Why doesn’t Mario have an absurd crotch buldge holding in his 10 inch slice of manhood? Why doesn’t Yoshi look like a Fist of the North Starcharacter.

That, my friends, is why the design is sexist.”~Angelo M. D’Argenio

          4/17/2014

Dude. YES! I have to put that in a sig quote somewhere thanks for linking me.

          • Cazar

I bet the ladies wouldn’t ever be able to get enough of crotch bulge Mario.

          • Arrei

But, wait. Why is that level of exposure necessary to be equal? Samus is in a skintight suit showing off her curves. Captain Falcon is in a tight racing outfit showing off his muscles. Maybe if Samus pranced around in a sling bikini Captain Thong might be warranted, but…

To say nothing of Snake’s ass in Brawl.

      • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

So very true. Nintendo does not ever intentionally try to offend. It is all about the fun and trying to figure out something else to do. I think it is going to be a welcomed edition to this combat…can’t wait for this game.

        • Vash bane

I might just do the idiotic thing and waste money on both versions >.< lol

      • Göran Isacson

Someone can do something bad without meaning to do so, and they should still face consequences for it. Intent isn’t some magical cure-all, after all. Also, what does Peach have to do with anything? Her heels are far more sensible to begin with and a part of her already established character design. You might wanna check how well your own arguments hold water before you complain that other people’s complaints have no legitimacy.

        • http://www.ihasnowebsitez.com Satonaka CP-Four

There’s also no such thing as bad publicity, so either way whether there’s something bad as you point out from this then Nintendo is still winning out in the end. Seriously tho, there is no argument here; it was explained that her boots are to give emphasis to her kicks damage and if we’re talking story/gameplay segregation here then she needed something to run faster without the use of her suit. These boots fit the lack of speed and damage she lacks without the suit (somewhat, cant confirm until we actually play it.)

Now is that a good or even a decent explanation for it from Nintendo’s side? Probably not, but we were given one nonetheless, probably not the one you wanted i’m afraid from the sounds of it and others that share your oipinion. But it was a reason they never needed to give in the first place outside of a simple ‘Nintendo Directs’ video.

If we really wanna go off base then we can start up arguments on how Peach, a princess, doesn’t belong in a ‘fighting’ game (She was one of my faves back in melee for the record.) But the argument was never really brought up or emphasized since melee so we just need to get to that point of non-importance about Samus and her heels which we WILL get there the sooner we get to an actual release date and people have other things to worry about and occupy themselves with.

Trust me, my argument seems to be holding water just fine considering it’s not getting the amount of flak an argument like this would be getting on Tumblr… those people would’ve crucified me with a simple comment in favor of Samus’s heels like mine O_o

          • Göran Isacson

I think that one Donald Sterling would disagree with your assessment that there is no such thing as “bad publicity”. And while I can see how giving her footwear to emphasize kicking damage is a sound design choice, arguing that high heels are the way to go because they let you kick harder and run faster is so divorced from logic that whoever states it should owe logic alimony. Even back when the Zero Suit was designed, the designer sheet explicitly stated that she should not have high heels, because that wouldn’t be practical.

Also I still don’t really get how Peach relates to this argument. The complaints about Samus is how, ever since the Zero Suit got introduced, she has been progressively been made more and more “dolled up”, with first a skintight bodysuit, then a set of high heels and a fighting style that’s more Bayonetta than what we’ve previously seen from Samus. I don’t see how that would relate to some troglodytes arguing Peach has no place in a fighting game because she’s a princess. To accept that Peach had a place in the Smash Bros games is miles apart from being okay with Zero Suit Samus being more and more designed for fanservice.

Also, that your argument isn’t getting as much flak as it is on tumblr doesn’t really mean anything- the people here who would defend sexualized fanservice to the bitter end because THEY like it, and damn anyone who might take offense at a character being treated more like a dress-up doll than a saviour of the galaxy, are FAR more open and vocal about it. You are essentially preaching to the choir, but that says nothing of the quality of your argument.

          • http://www.ihasnowebsitez.com Satonaka CP-Four

Nah Sterling sadly is “the exception that proves the rule”, and sadly, there’s always at least one of those. Also if heels weren’t practical back then based on her design well then as we can clearly see with the technology they implemented into her boots this go around, what was once impractical back then is no longer an issue now.

Problem is most people are associating those heels with “well there’s no way you can fight in that” and comments along those lines, but assumptions like those are grounded in real life, which this game isn’t. Otherwise we wouldn’t have dinosaurs that can fight and plumbers who don’t do any actual plumbing O_o

Samus is still Samus to me, but if it bothers you that much well then there’s always the option of not picking her when the game comes out and although I usually avoid the old lame come-back of “if you dont like, don’t buy” but well… there it is I guess @_@, and you’re free to call me out on it if you like because it is one of the lamest cop-out argument rebuttals I think personally in the history of internet message boards. But either way come release date I’ll be smashing it up regardless of how I feel about those heels and if you want to join us for some fun and want to put aside this whole business that Nintendo isn’t gonna change this late in the game then you’re more than welcome to. Always great to have another competitor who just wants to smash it up and have some fun.

          • Göran Isacson

Alas, the “if you don’t like, don’t buy” is far from the only cop-out argument I’ma have to call out here. For instance- at the beginning, people were complaining because a lot of Samus poses made it seem like she had a wasp-sized waist and the anatomy of the model was hella off from what it used to be. They’re changing THAT so as to make Samus anatomy more realistic, and if they can do that… well, the whole “assumptions like that is grounded in real life” doesn’t hold that much water. If it did, why didn’t they simply turn Samus anatomy into that freaky Pikachu-abomination from Melee and called it over and done with? Why didn’t they just get everyone straight up clay fighter? Wouldn’t THAT make it all stretchy and cartoony and “dynamic” and “unreal”?

Because while Mario may get away with his fist inflating to giant size, Metroid is supposed to be more realistic. Peach fights by hovering and throwing around magic peaches. Arguing about her comparatively sensible heels is a non-issue that I have never seen anyone raise a fuss over. Samus Aran is based in science fiction where there are no crazy heel-shoes for any male characters, even if the technology COULD improve their mobility and help them run faster. Like it or not, Metroid may be sci-fi but it isn’t the kind of crazy fantasy world that can get away with stuff like this. This isn’t Gurren Lagann or Bayonetta. It’s supposed to be more grounded and low-key than this.

Also, “putting aside this whole business that Nintendo isn’t gonna change this late in the game” is an even BIGGER cop-out answer. As is insinuating that people who dislike a negative thing about a character design should just stay away from it. This is the most frustrating part about this entire discussion- to use a simile, if someone pissed in the pool it’s like people are telling the people who complain about the piss that they’re “ruining the fun for everyone” because they happen to be really into pissing in pools. Shifting the blame not onto the person who pissed, but the person who complains. That is not how you win an argument, that’s how you make yourself look like an utter tool who can’t really come up with a counter-argument. Insinuating that you’re going to have more fun because you approach things with a non-critical approach isn’t mature or above anything, it just tries to end an argument without really acknowledging anything being said.

Nintendo are not immune to criticism, or making poor creative choices. Need I say anything more than “Other M”? That game, in combination with a Nintendo that seems to put more and more emphasis on a Samus Aran outside of her armor and in a skintight outfit that now also features high heels and a bunch of contortionist anatomy for no sensible reason. It all sure seems to me to add up to a Nintendo that isn’t quite sure what to do with Samus, so they up her skimp-appeal because what else do you do with a female character, durr?

If this makes me sound cynical, then so be it. But it is what I see, and it is what I shall point out because just sitting back and doing nothing because “it’s too late to change things NOW” isn’t how I roll.

    • Spirit Macardi

Me either. They don’t even look so much like high heels to me, it looks more like the mechanism Chell had in the Portal games that kept her legs from being liquified by high falls.

    • MrJechgo

Only thing I kinda hate is that… isn’t there a Nintendo game where a laser sword is actually featured in? If so, then why not use that one instead?

(NO, NOT THE MONADO! IT GOES WITH SHULK, WHO I HOPE GETS A SPOT IN THE ROSTER!)

As for Samus’s boots, I don’t understand either, because there’s nothing wrong with them IMO. However, it’s another story once you get into the technical details:
      - running, jumping and fighting in high heels all sound like a VERY bad idea, even for a combat-trained woman like Samus. Risk of ankle twisting, lower back muscle strain and more impact on the tip of the feet don’t look like good things to have in battle.
      - Jet boots never existed in real life [as of now], but controlling both shoes at once would require a LOT of coordination, reflexes and strength, which might affect your combat skills, especially if your legs get tired just for controlling the shoes.

IMO, ZS Samus should have gotten a small jet pack instead:
      - Keep her flat-sole boots, similar to Brawl
      - Give her a jet pack, similar to the varia suit’s
      - Keep everything as is for her, since she can rocket herself with the jet pack
      - Give her the ability to hover for a short time, like Peach can

Finally, Samus doesn’t need high heels to be “defined” as a woman… unless people are much too blind to notice the breasts and the softly-defined face. I’m not against the idea for her having high-heeled rocket boots, I’m just glad she’s in and selectable without any trick. I just think that it could have been a little more thought out once you got into it.

      • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

That Jet Pack idea is not a bad one. I wonder if they just wanted to keep the clean look of the ZS without hindering any overall body mobility or look of the character. As for the heels and maneuverability/injury, if anyone could do it, Samus could…Bayonetta certainly can (which was the first thing I thought off when I saw the heels)

I think as we see more gameplay footage, we will see what they were aiming for. However, in the meantime, I think it just brings another ability to an already cool character.

      • Symbol de Au

The jet pack idea wouldn’t work because the shoes were specifically added to give her more kicking power, which was stated by Sakurai in the direct. As for the technical stuff.

You don’t run in fights but she wouldn’t need to anyway because she could fly.

Kicking in rocket powered heels would hurt more than a flat bottom. They’re also made of metal with a sturdy base so they wouldn’t strain her foot like a regular heel.

She has Chozo training and DNA which gives her enhanced reflexes etc. so I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t have problems controlling them.

Aside from all that Rockets in real life require a tube in order to function so the heel part is required.

Aside from all THAT most of the stuff in Smash bros. isn’t practical in real life in the first place. The real reason people are tearing it apart is obvious. By the by only someone that has a problem with the look would say that they’re to “define her as a woman” no one else talks like that.

        • Armane

          “You don’t run in fights”
It’s Smash, everyone has a dash, Samus will run in those heels.

They could have used a different design. Just like they could have not given her a whip in Brawl. But that’s what we’ve ended up with.

          • Symbol de Au

Yeah, you run in Smash but I thought we were trying to hold this to real life standards. If you’re going to complain about the impracticality of her running in heels shouldn’t you complain about the impracticality of her running in the first place when she has rockets strapped to her feet?

“They could have” So? I like this design. They could have gone with the classic Samus that wore swimsuits. I don’t care what they could have done. The heels don’t even look sexy and I highly doubt they’re supposed to. The flying kicks she was doing in the direct looked sick as carp though.

      • Aaron K Stone

        Doesn’t seem to impede Peach.

        • Symbol de Au

Peach isn’t a “strong female character”.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Super Princess Peach says otherwise though.T_T

          • Symbol de Au

You mean the one where Bowser steals her vibr- *cough* vibe scepter? ._.

          • Aaron K Stone

Well she kicks ungodly amounts of ass with her… ass in Smash Bros. And I object to Peach not being a strong female character. She was no less strong in 3D World than any other character, Characters in Mario games are merely what the individual game requires them to be, like whether Luigi is a coward or not.

          • Symbol de Au

To be honest I was more mocking the term “strong female character” than I was saying she’s not one. I don’t really see her as one but I also don’t give a karp if she is one or not. I’m pretty sure I remember her stating that she was trained to be delicate in Bowser’s Inside story or one of the Paper Mario games, so there’s that. She can fight just like Mario etc. can if she wants to so there’s that too. I just don’t really care. =/

        • hawk222

Last I checked, Peach’s heels weren’t quite as high as Zero Suit Samus’ appear to be. (Then again, I never really looked into it too much, so there’s that, too.)

  • Namuro

Seeing that picture makes me think that there should really be a dual swords weapon for Link in the next Zelda game!

By the way, they got Samus’s pose for the paralyzer attack wrong! They should really have done some more research, as we all know what the real pose looks like…
