Mario Kart 8 Has Voice Chat And Lets You Upload Clips To YouTube

By Ishaan . April 30, 2014 . 7:30am

This morning, Nintendo revealed new features that will be present in Mario Kart 8. The publisher touched mainly upon new racers, new items and the game’s online multiplayer mode. Read on for the details.

Online Multiplayer:

Mario Kart 8 will support up to 12 players online across four different multiplayer modes. Nintendo confirmed that players will be able to voice chat with one another in multiplayer lobbies before the start of a race, using the microphone on the Wii U GamePad. You’ll also be able to chat via text phrases.

Mario Kart TV:

Mario Kart 8 will allow you to watch highlight racing reels, rewind them, play them in slow motion, or upload them to Miiverse. Alternatively, if you have a Google account, you can also upload your reels to YouTube.

Players also can create public or private tournaments for which they can specify the day of the week, the time and the rules. As in previous games, you’ll be able to race against ghost data from friends and the top 10 worldwide racers. If you happen to beat a ghost from the game’s development team, you’ll get stamps to use on Miiverse.

New Racers:

Pink Gold Peach is a new heavyweight racer in Mario Kart 8, and is the female counterpart to Metal Mario. Meanwhile, Baby Rosalina is another newly playable racer. All in all, the game has 30 racers in total.

New Items:

Another pair of new items has been revealed as well—the Super Horn, which blows away all other items and racers (and Red and Blue Shells!); and the Crazy Eight, which operates similar to the swirling group of different items from Mario Kart 7.

Mario Kart 8 will be available in North America and Europe on May 30th.

And also this promo for Europe and NA!
In North America the choice is between New Super Mario Bros. U, Pikmin 3, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD or Wii Party U.

  • Herok♞

Man all I have to say is Nintendo is on a roll, I hope this sells really well and sparks a wiiu buying spree

  • pokeroi

Nintendo surly knows how to push all your buttons~

  • ZnTxn

Another baby and another metal character, welp, at least we have the Koopalings, but I wanted King Boo to return. Or at least kept the Honey Queen.

  • Spirit Macardi

Now THIS is my idea of a next-gen game! Using power and tech to create something that doesn’t simply look amazing, but has an astounding amount of creativity and can show some incredible worlds that you’d never see anywhere else!

I haven’t been this hyped about a Mario Kart game in a long time, but good lord did they ever hook me this time :3

    • PreyMantis

It’s insane how much detail this game has. When they showed the customization part early in the video, you can see their facial expressions and the amount of details the karts have.

  • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Wait…So I can’t create a private lobby with my friends and invite them?

    • PreyMantis

You can. Watch the Nintendo Direct at around 20:00 mark.

      • NintendoPSXTheSecond

I did. It mentions online tournaments. But it never specifically mentioned if I can create a Private lobby for just me and my friend and a lobby for me and my friend, that we can then go que for 10 other random racers. If we can’t do that, then the online is super limited.

        • Muffum

The online menu at 22:15 specifically has an option titled “Friends,” and they specifically mention using voice chat to banter with your friends or to banter while waiting for your friends, so I think it’s a safe assumption.

        • PreyMantis

It’s there. The online was shown with the option to play worldwide, regional, friends, or tournament. The friends option is most likely the private lobby.

  • NeptuniasBeard

I think their should be a parental warning for the suggestiveness of Suzy’s… excitement noises…

  • AuraGuyChris

Yes, the Blue Shell got a new counter item!

I guess I’ll get two games at the end of the month.

  • TheGameTagerZ

This video made me cringe hard…

Looking forward to the game though

  • Göran Isacson

While at first glance the whole “anti-gravity” thing seems to be less about finding alternate paths to victory and more of a way to create visual variation in the tracks, I still admit I am liking the look of this game and its gameplay. If only for the Super Horn letting me blow those pesky Blue Shells away, and the boomerang appealing to my inner sadist. Who’s looking forward to making people think they’re safe, only to then see hope snatched away from them as they’re hit on the rebound? This guy.

  • Hehe, lucky me. They let me get a free game and the only game I don’t happen to own is New Super Mario Bros U. I was going to wait to buy it really cheap used or an inevitable Nintendo Selects version, but this is really nice too. My money is kind of limited here. I can buy new games if I want to, but I’d rather save my money at any chance I get. I have Mario Kart 8 pre-ordered for a discount.

The Youtube idea is great please let this be the begining of nintendo allowing lets plays on youtube. This has long been overdue :)

    • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

Nintendo has been letting people monetize again since last summer.

      • TalesOfBS

People seems to be always well informed about anything bad regarding Nintendo and very bad informed about anything good they did.

        • Mugiwara

          Yeah. I wonder why?

          • Chris Evan Jonance Ingeniero

you cant blame them~ A LOT of gaming websites alwasy bashes nintendo~ you wont see anything good for them in sites like kotaku, polygon or ign

  • Epic Markell Joshua

One issue why do we have to talk into the gamepad and not be able to use headsets?

    • XypherCode

You can use headsets with mics. It supports all games with voice chat features like CoD. You can test it out with ‘Wii U Chat’ and some games that uses voice chat. If it doesn’t work…well too bad for us.

    • CozyAndWarm

I think you can, you could for MH at least. The gamepad is much easier though imo, the mic is already right there.

      • XypherCode

Do you have to place the GamePad closer to your mouth or does it read your voice clear enough not to?

        • PreyMantis

No. It’s surprisingly sensitive even on medium volume.

  • Aaron K Stone

Bbbbut… but everyone tells me Nintendo can’t do online.

  • XaviIniesta

My biggest question about this game is if we’ll be able to add CPU opponents when we race against friends Online.

You were not able to do so in Mario Kart 7, which could make online playing sessions pretty unplayable.
Without 8 players constantly slowing each other down with items or passing each other, the game doesn’t function as it normally does, which can lead to you never being able to see any of your opponents again for the duration of all 3 laps if you get knocked out by a shell once, since you don’t get good items as frequently when you’re in position 3/3 as you would if you were in place 7/8, and there are no CPU opponents in between you and behind you to change things up with the items they pick up.

As an example, one time when I played MK7 with two of my friends, we all ended up just far away enough from each other that we could see, but not interact with each other. We drove like that for all three laps. No interaction at all, except for the occasional red shell that was blocked by a shield of green shells.
That was very dull, and not at all what I was used to when there were also CPU’s on the track in the other games when you play Offline.

I really really hope they let us fill in the empty spots with CPU opponents this time.

  • Leonard Norwood Jr.

Well I’m still getting impressed about how they use that tech and creativity to make sure that Mario Kart 8 is the game to get. This provides an example of how you use your tech to full effect. Anyway, my prayers go to Nintendo giving It all they’ve got to hang on.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    Best idea ever!

  • Junko Enoshima

Birdo will be missed…but not forgotten.

    • Necr0naut

They took away my Bowser Jr. :( Oh well, Roy will have to do.

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

dont worry DLC characters may come

  • SetzerGabbiani

You can really tell that this is Nintendo’s “ace in the hole” they’re going all out to make sure this game sells systems. Good for them.

  • s07195

Japanese Niconico users are feeling a bit displeased with the lack of Niconico uploading support. :/

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

well they got NicoNico Miiverse community so they can cry for it there

  • SlickRoach

Huh? I thought Nintendo was against uploading to Youtube? Well at least they’re making use of their features with voice chat and what not. Now the Wii U almost feels like a next gen console now.

    • Guest

You know consoles generations are just a categorization based in time-frames to ease discussion between devices, their predecessors and successors, right?

Oh, pardon me! You are using the marketing term created to try positioning a product based in bad mouthing the competition but telling nothing about the product itself. Go on then, throw a ‘blast processing’ while you are it for the giggles.

  • The only thing I hate about this game is the characters. Most of them are pointless and unecessary.

  • Namuro

Everything looks great so far! I love that spin boost idea, especially. The graphic looks good, too, with nice little details like Mario’s moustache flapping in the wind, LOL.

As for the characters, though. I think the roster’s vary enough, but I wish they would include other characters from other series, that is still considered within the Mario world. Someone like Prof. E. Gadd, Fawful, Goombella, Ashley…

Ah, well, there might just be DLC characters in the future, who knows?

  • Hagaren

I’d swap Metal Mario and Gold Peach (both seem pointless to me) for Diddy Kong and Bowser Jr. (or Dry Bowser, one of my favorites). Other than that, I’m very excited for this game. Time to get a Wii U!
