Junpei Iori Is Next Up To Bat In Persona 4 Arena Ultimax’s Latest Trailer

By Sato . May 8, 2014 . 4:31pm

In the previous trailer, we got to see Persona 3’s Yukari Takeba in the spotlight for Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. This time, it’s her fellow SEES member Junpei Iori, showing off what he’s capable of, using his bat in the upcoming fighter.

At the start of the video, Junpei is heard daydreaming and saying “I’m sorry for always causing you trouble… but if you’d accept someone like me… marry me, Chido!!! [Chidori Yoshino]”

After a few more lines, we get a brief look at Junpei in action, as he gives Labrys and Aigis a good beating with some pretty intense combos. The trailer ends with a glimpse at Shadow Iori.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax will be released this Fall for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in North America.

Well, at least he uses a bat instead of wielding a sword like a bludgeoning weapon.

  • NeptuniasBeard

Junpei Iori is a good example of a feminist, he believes a woman can take a bat to the face as well as any man! My kind of guy

    • It’s quite long, he’d get a neckful of hickeys.

    That’s my bro.

  • ivanchu77

The best persona 3 character, the man was a total bro and his character development was great, too bad he’s not popular in japan since he’s not a pretty boy like the others -_-

    • MrTyrant

I think people were just mad at him for being envious of the protag while wanting to be a hero and leader. I agree that his development was great and he wasn’t a bad character in fact I linked him a lot. He was funny.

      • Maria Francisca Mena

He get a lot better when you play as female protagonist

        • DeadLineDance

You said it. My wife was so mad that she couldn’t date him.

          • miju

I wanted to too, but then I remembered Chidori exists and no one should really get in the way of that. Especially since she’s such a massive catalyst to his character development.

    • Japan hates facial hair sadly.

    • Brimfyre

He’s a fantastic character but a horrible best friend. Couldn’t even call me by my first name.

    • chroma816

Definitely a better best friend/”Magician Arcana” than Yosuke, that’s for sure.

  • Drew Hendrix

Is Chidori going to be referenced

    • Yatol Charles

      he just did

      • Drew Hendrix

What exactly does he say about her

        • Mr_SP

The first lines of the trailer. He apologises for being trouble, asks Chidori to marry him… and wakes up.

  • Arcana Drill

So i guess they are using the P3 portable version as canon? i mean it seems that chidori is alive…..

    • AnotherTime

Wrong. You can keep her alive in both the original and FES. You just have to talk to Junpei since the day he met Chidori and encourage him not to give up. Easy.

      • Arcana Drill

actually only in FES, memory was a bit hazy and i confused with another character that can be kept alive in P3P.

      • Wait what

Not in the original version, no. But yeah I’m going to assume the Save Chidori thing from FES is canon otherwise this opening is really messed up.

        • AnotherTime

Ah, my bad. I haven’t played in so long I seemed to have forgotten my lore.

        • God

Everything that involves Junpei is messed up.

        • DragKudo

The answer made sure she was dead. Maybe Junpei can’t get over her death.

In the revival route she forget about Junpei and he said that was alright so I doubt he went back and tried to fall in love with her again.

          • Wait what

It’d be especially messed up if they were having a goofy comedy skit about him dreaming of marrying the girl he loved if they kept it canon in the Arena series that she was dead. It’s a messed up joke either way, but I’d be annoyed by it if she was dead.

To be honest, I never saved Chidori in my FES playthroughs. I liked Chidori, but I felt like it served the story better to keep her death like it was in the original. It’s a better story if she’s dead as opposed to an amnesiac. Plus her surviving kind of creates plot holes. But if they’re going to do goofy comedy skits about him wanting to marry her, I’d hope they are considering her alive at least.

          • DragKudo

It’s not really goofy. That’s how he felt for Chidori of course he’s going to have a dream about her like that and then when he wakes up realize oh she’s dead and now i’m sad. If she isn’t dead in this game i will be disappointed. His shadow won’t really have anything to poke at other than his jealousy toward Minato.

  • SetzerGabbiani

Junpei looks like a cokehead in some of his art for this game.

  • Steven Higgins

Oh jeez. He’s gonna be creepin’ on Yukiko now, isn’t he?

    • Jadfish

I want him to creep (and fail) on every woman he encounters.

Including a cross dressing Teddy. You know, for science.

      • Gemlit

I thought Iori already has a girlfriend, Chidori.

        • MakoSoldier7

she be dead. (unless certain things are canon)

          • chroma816

Considering his words in this trailer, the FES “save Chidori” thing is canon.

          • MakoSoldier7

could be just dreaming of her still being alive, he looks pretty bummed when he wakes up. or not, i guess it really makes no difference :P

          • chroma816

Well, it would make a difference in canon.

I’d say he looks bummed because he doesn’t think he’s “worthy” of Chidori.

  • Nitraion

At least junpei is a proof that bro’s chara can have love interest… XD
now he more like klein from SAO maybe same voice too….
    anyway what’s his “stage” name?

    • Hexodious

Surprising Slugger of Futile Swing. Or something like that.

  • Brimfyre

Everytime I see that Shadow Operatives image from Arena I really want a full Persona: Shadow Operatives game. I hope they have a role in 5.

  • Yan Zhao

SHadiw Junpei eh? Wonder what his shadow is. Probably Chidori related guilt-trippin.

  • DyLaN
  • Skeptika Crediblus

I wish they’d made the Ultimax stuff DLC instead of a whole new game.

    • Wait what

No. I want them to actually continue the story instead of just releasing DLC characters and then inevitable rereleases for complete editions. This game has a brand new story, playable Shadow characters, brand new characters, brand new modes, and balances. This is what I want, not DLC that drags the same game out for years ala Blazblue.

      • Skeptika Crediblus

No. They can advance the story and add characters via DLC, not by making me pay for another disc of largely the same content. Vanillaware did this just fine with Muramasa,

        • Wait what

It’s not largely the same content, dude. Aside from the returning fighters it’s all new content. That’s like saying Digital Devil Saga 2 is largely the same content as Digital Devil Saga 1.

          • Skeptika Crediblus

Still, you don’t need a full release for a few screens, a few new characters, and some new audio tracks. The engine looks the same, the old characters still apparently have all of their old moves. As updates go, it wouldn’t be a heavy lift.

          • Wait what

You’re failing to mention the entirely new story (which is going to be like 20 hours or so worth of new story based on the first game’s length), the entirely new modes (such as that RPG-inspired mode), all the playable Shadow characters that play differently from the regular characters, and so much more. That, on top of the brand new characters, new music, and tweaks to the gameplay…. it wouldn’t have worked as DLC or an update. It’s an entirely new game. If that bothers you so badly, then don’t play it.

          • Skeptika Crediblus

I didn’t say I wouldn’t play it, and now that you told me not to I will play the hell out of it.

Unless it’s first-person or a rhythm game, because that’s a bridge too far.

          • Wait what

lol. I didn’t tell you not to play it, I suggested you not play it if it bothers you that it exists. But, uhhh, good for you, man. Glad I helped Atlus get a sale I guess? haha

I was so done with this conversation days ago, btw.

          • Skeptika Crediblus

Great! Then let’s talk about something less incendiary, like politics, sex, or religion. :P

          • Wait what

That sounds like a great idea!

        • Hexodious

You realize that those DLCs characters only for story purposes, right? And those are four characters. That doesn’t even come close to what Ultimax are going to have, it got new modes which can’t be simple created through a simple DLC, ton of Shadow characters and new characters, new content, Golden Arena Mode which a DLC can’t even fix at all, they need to personally develop that into the game, not everything is fixable with a DLC. Just because it looks the same, doesn’t mean it is the same.

  • chroma816

I guess this means that saving Chidori in FES was canon, then? Good.
