There Might Be Hope For SMT: Digital Devil Saga As A PS2 Classic In Europe

By Ishaan . May 8, 2014 . 10:00am

There was a point in time when U.K. publisher Ghostlight intended to release Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga and Digital Devil Saga 2 as PS2 Classics in Europe. Unfortunately, in 2012, Ghostlight stated that the two games were suffering from emulation problems, which was preventing their release.

That might—key word: “might”—be changing in the future. Over on Ghostlight’s blog, community manager Ross Brierley writes:

A quick word about the recent release of Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer’s Call (aka Nocturne) on PSN in North America. While I can’t comment on whether this title will be released in Europe, I’ve been hearing a few stirrings regarding a possible European PSN release for Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2 as PS2 classics. I can’t promise anything just yet, but I’m hoping that this might mean the conflicts with the emulator which prevented us from releasing the game on PSN last year have now been fixed. I will of course provide you with more news on this as soon as I get it, so as always, keep watching this space!

Meanwhile, Atlus USA have been teasing more Shin Megami Tensei PS2 Classics, following the release of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne in North America.

  • Yeah, it sounds like it’s possible to me. Digital Devil Saga ran off of the same game engine as Nocturne, which is why I’ve been figuring that these’ll come eventually. I guess either Atlus fixed a code somewhere, or Sony pushed out a PS2 Classics emulator stabilizer or something.

“It means we’re going to eat French good, girl.”

  • Already got DDS and DDS two , what I’d really like is both Raidou games xD

  • Revorse

Will the Digital Devil saga be coming to the US as well?

    • We asked, Atlus USA wouldn’t say.

      • Landale

They might not be saying it, but this little error shows they’ve at least toyed with the idea. There’s not really any reason that description would be typed up if there hadn’t been plans to use it.

        • He was asking about DDS, though. Raidou is a different series altogether. The Digital Devil Saga games were the ones that were specifically pointed to as having emulation problems. We don’t know to what extent those issues affected the other SMT games on PS2.

          • Landale

The description is key there. That’s describing DDS, despite the fact that the game there is not DDS.

  • MaximDualBlade

Yes please. How about all 7 Shin Megami Tensei of ps2 on all regions :D Especially Devil Summoner 1 and 2, Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2 and Nocturne.

    • Ninten

If I was Atlus, I would release these games in every region to maximize profits.

      Still, this is good news.

    • idrawrobots

I already have them, but I would like more people to have them.

  • RawrWata

You’d think with the game being a Digital only release (durr) they’d just take the North American version of the game and release game onto the EU store, surely it can’t be that hard.

To my understanding the NA and EU PSN store has plenty of PS1 classic games that are Japanese.

Hell, I think Castlevanina SotN on EU PSN is just the North American version of the PS1 classic release.

    • All Fiction

It’s Atlus you’re talking about, even if Ghostlight asked for a build to put on the EU PSN, Atlus would do absolutely everything to delay the release fo years.

    • decus

Yes, there is an import section. But as much as people whine and bitch at Atlus, Atlus would get whined and bitched at by Ghostlight if they did that in this situation and I don’t imagine Atlus wants to lose them as a publisher willing to localize their stuff in the EU.

Basically, Ghostlight would make money off of putting their published version of Nocturne and whatever else on the PSN. If Atlus went “lol, let’s put the NA version Ghostlight wasn’t involved with at all lol on the EU PSN lol” then that would cost Ghostlight sales/money. I’d imagine agreements are such that this isn’t even an option for Atlus, unless that stuff expired.

These games being on the PSN (or maybe coming to it) is really good news. I remember hunting them down years ago after I played Nocturne on a whim and not only where most of them around the 100$ mark but they took a while to find an unused copy as well (I don’t buy used games, a personal preference since every one I ever bought crapped out on me by some means ).
I kind of wish they would have considered doing this many more years ago… Don’t get me wrong I tend to prefer a physical copy of a game but if it would have saved me 50+ bucks on even a singular game I kind of think I would have just gone the digital rout

    • Guest

Atlus did a reprinting of Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga back in 2008 and have continued distributing it ever since . You can still find the physical versions of each, brand new, on sites like Amazon for $15-$20, or GameStop for $30.

      • revenent hell

I didn’t mean for these games in particular. Nocturne just happen to be the first game I tried out of the SMT labeled games and looking up ones like The Soulless army and such was an expensive thing to find hence my comment

        • NimbusStev

Yeah, Nocturne and DDS aren’t so bad, but Raidou was insanely expensive a few years ago. That’s the main reason I never played it.

          • revenent hell

I bought both Raidou games plus Persona EP at the same time and I do believe I was set back 300$ for the three of the games hence why I remember buying them so …not as fondly.
The things one spends their money on eh?

          • NimbusStev

Hey, if that’s what makes you happy, nothing wrong with spending money on something you enjoy. But yeah, that’s quite a bit more than I willing to pay for them haha.

  • Atlus been robbing my wallet lately

  • Vash bane

these two game and p3 are what got me into these types of games (I don’t remember are they also the same company?)

    • vincent_vincent

      Yup, All Atlus baby

  • Bojan Njegomir

This makes me happy, never really got a chance to play this! Now…if i would see ”Shadow Hearts franchise coming on PSN” i would literally cry from happiness! :)

  • CleruTesh

Yeah these games need come to US PSN. Also Ar Tonelico 1 & 2, Mana Khemia 2, and Steambot Chronicles, of course. Most importantly Ar Tonelico 2. I bought that new when I had a b/c PS3, but it was the MGS 40 gig model, and that game ended up being incompatible. So sad! I know, not Atlus so kinda unrelated. PS2 just had so many great games unplayable on modern PS3s.

  • Skeptika Crediblus

Hey Atlus, here’s an idea; release all three everywhere.

Or just for the Vita. Whatever.

  • SMT

I just hope Ghostlight fixes the game if they intend to release the EU version… The 50Hz conversion was atrocious and there was no option to play the game on 60Hz, so the frame rate is choppy (It’s noticeably slower), the audio is out of sync with the visuals, and for some reason the colors were more “murky”.
