It’s been a long, long time since we heard much word about Korean developer XL Games and their tie-up with 2K Games to make an online Civilization game. We almost assumed it was vaporware by this point. Now, after some teases earlier this year, there’s an actual date for their closed beta test: May 27th.
Interested parties can apply for the closed Korean beta from now till the 25th, with winners notified on the 26th. Civilization Online is billed as a more casual version of the 4X (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate) turn based strategy grand dame.
Supposedly, this will mean you don’t have to put in the soul-sucking hours that Civ games tend to drag on for as your mind goes “One… more… turn…” The first four races and leaders to be announced are the Romans with Julius Caesar, Egypt with Hatshepsut, China with Qin Shi Huang and the war-mongering Aztecs with Montezuma.
In an interview with ThisisGame earlier this year, founder of XL Games Jake Song, who did a lot of work on Lineage, said the game was “60% complete”. The game was announced for the West as well, with the above trailer released last year on the 2K Asia YouTube channel, but there’s been no word nor release date for it yet.
Civilization Online will be going into closed beta later in May in Korea on PC. A Western release has been announced but no date has been set yet.
