Super Smash Bros. Will Let You Play As A Female Villager, Too

By Ishaan . May 16, 2014 . 12:00pm

Just as there are male and female variants of the Wii Fit Trainer in Super Smash Bros., there are male and female variants of the Villager as well. Director Masahiro Sakurai revealed last night on Miiverse that one can choose to play as a girl Villager, too.

  • Second villager from the left is about to take my soul…

    • DragKudo

He already did welcome to Hell.

    • GH56734

Didn’t think the creepiness of the main villager (the one revealed before) could be toppled :P

  • angelx03

Oh man, I hope that means there’s a chance Lucina will be a female option for Marth.

    • fairysun

You mean, Marth will be the male option for Lucina. :P

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

      Not same character

      • Aaron K Stone

Neither is the Wii Fit Trainer.

        • 하세요

They are both empty shell characters, like Villager. It’s much easier to code a few SFX for one alt than completely overhauling interface, announcer, crowd chants, etc.

Male / Female WFT and Villager are far more plausible than giving Marth a Lucina outfit. Sounds great on paper until you’re the one actually having to code and develop that nonsense.

          • kagekiri

Eh, just leave the sounds/chants/text, make the voice mute if it doesn’t match (like Metal Mario or the Polygon/Wireframe crew, and possibly wireframe Little Mac if Mac speaks at all, are muted of their flesh-and-blood version’s voices but not other sound effects), and then it’s just a 3D model swap mapped to the same skeleton.

It’d still require testing, but it’d be less intensive to program/create, ostensibly.

Though if you accused me of being a mouse given a cookie and asking for milk, yeah, I’d have no defense :P

          • PragmaticSoul

Thank you. People don’t seem to actually think about what they say in practice. But for Smash Bros, that tends to happen a lot anyway. This whole “skin” business is giving rise to so pretty unreasonable demands. Even if Lucy was a skin of Marth, there would be backlash.

Let’s not forget that she is the #1 waifu in terms of popularity, so we’d hear “well they already have the model why is she not her own character?”

          • British_Otaku

            WTF… Wii Fit Trainer.
It’s WFT. I knew something felt off about your post. :P

Otherwise, you have a point that they would have to do a notable amount more for Marth/Lucina to work… Even if I think they could be “lazy” in an interesting way with no new announcer/crowd chants but just having the mask and alternative voice clips.

            That would work just fine.

    • Kornelious

      I sure hope so :D

  • evilkaz

    Protoman skin for megaman?

    Dry bowser?
    Dr mario back?
    Secptile/grovle skin for greninja?
    Skyward Sword zelda?

I hope they’re putting a lot of effort into these skins.

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

They have to be either same character or clothing.

    • Secptile throwing water shuriken with other water based moves and moves in general sceptile doesn’t use makes sense?
Dr mario and dry bowser would be good though.

      • Hunts Rattata

You could swap out the water effects with spinning leaves. Probably too much work just for the sake of a costume though.

    • J_Joestar

Protoman would be cool, but i’m sure there would be those disappointed that the shield would just be for show.
That and the Final Smash would lost a lot of it’s impact.

      • kagekiri

Just go further and stick all the iterations of Protoman in that Final Smash!

I don’t recall a Mega Man X version of Protoman, but .EXE and Starforce have versions of him instead of Zero, if I recall correctly.

If they really need 5 shooters for the Final Smash to make sense, Mega Man Zero and Mega Man X’s Zero could sub in…

Of course, this is probably ridiculous, but I can dream, right?

  • TheGioG

Slasher smiles. Slasher smiles everywhere… c:
On a serious note, these gender swap costumes are looking pretty damn neat. Now there are no excuses for not putting FE Awakening’s Tactician in the game. At this point, I don’t even mind if they use their default appearances.

    • Kornelious

Man that would be awesome, Although since Robin is a “Created character” I’m not sure if they’ll put him/her in…..But who knows, lately Nintendo has been full of surprises….kinda :P

      • BlakShiranui

Villager’s a “Created Character” too, so Robin is still fair game.

        • Kornelious

Really? Well i guess there’s hope after all! :D

      • Reiswindy

Remember they said they would add “some sort of customisation”…..

I’m all in for customizable Robin.

        • Kornelious

If they took out story mode for it it’s probally has a pretty deep customization. I’m all for it as well! :D
          …………………..Also………….Shulk………..That is all :P

    • PragmaticSoul

      Here’s an excuse… Chrom’s the main character.

      • Ixbran

Here’s an excuse… Robin is far more interesting and actually has a chance at diversifying the SSB4 roster. Chrom would just be another blue haired pretty boy swordsman.

        • Suicunesol

“far more interesting” is subjective. Robin was a blank-slate character designed to represent the player. As a Fire Emblem representative, I think there are far more qualified characters.

          • Ixbran

But its because she/he is a blank slate that they would have the most creativity with her/him. By going with a character with a pre-established fighting style and personality, their limited with making a fighting style that fights the characters style and personality.

With Robin they have freedom to have her/him do what ever they want them to do. Going with Robin over Chrom would give Sakurai more creative freedom with her/his move set, which in turn enhances her/his chances of being something completely different from what we already have.

          • Suicunesol

And what freedom would that be? Swords and/or magic, right? Other characters besides the Tactician can do that. Like Anna.

I’d wager it possible if the Tactician had some kind of ability where he cycles through common Fire Emblem classes when he uses down B. But I don’t see that happening because of the work and effort involved.

          • Kornelious

I always felt that Fire Emblem’s story was about Robin, but was being pushed forward by Chrom. Robin had a lot of story to him and most of the game focused on him. If you can find it in yourself to hate a character YOU created then something is wrong with you…….

          • Suicunesol

I don’t hate the Tactician. I thought the My Unit feature was a lot of fun.

I just think he’s not a good representative of Fire Emblem as a whole.

          • Kornelious

That is fair, but I feel that if we put Chrom in he’ll just be another Ike…(Heck he may even have the same Final smash) But with Robin there is so much more room for new stuff. Imagine what kind of moveset a Swordsman/Mage will have :D

          • Reiswindy

Summoning Grima as a final smash would be amazing!

          • Suicunesol

Oh, I don’t think Chrom will be another Ike. However, I am afraid that Marth, Chrom, and/or Lucina would be too alike. They’re all of the same bloodline and they all wield Falchion. It would be redundant for them all to be in SSB.

I can imagine the moveset of the Tactician. Could be cool. But man–I hold my ground! I want a character where people go, “Hey! I know her! She’s from Fire Emblem!” And she’d not be an alternate skin either, but a real female representative because we’ve not had one yet. And someone with character who does not look real generic.

          • PragmaticSoul

Agreed on having Chrom, Marth AND Lucy would be a bit much. But having Chrom and Marth is fine.

            Gameplay wise:

            Marth’s a swift swordsman

            Ike’s a brawler

Chrom’s somewhere in between the two. While Chrom’s technique may be a bit on the brute side, he still has refined enough form to teach Lucina how to wield Falchion like an expert.

They can think of something. The difference would be akin to Mario and Luigi or Fox and Falco.

Best female rep would be Lyndis.

          • Kornelious

That is true as well. I personally hope we at least get one character from Fire Emblem Awakening Preferablly Lucina
(1 Because she was my Avatar’s waifu
            (2. because she is another female representative
            (3. She is so BADASS!
…………..Though as long as my number one wanted character gets added then I have no regrets…….SHULK!!!

          • PragmaticSoul

            Gangel Arc: Chrom

            Valm Arc: Chrom

            Grima Arc: Robin

Chrom owns a vast majority of the game. It’s just that the last segment just so happened to be focused around Robin. We saw the first 2 arcs through our Avatar’s eyes. While Robin was a VERY important ally in Chrom’s story, just because it was seen through Robin’s does not mean it was Robin’s story.

            SPOILER ALERT

Dealing with Emmeryn’s death and the political tensions between Plegia and Ylisse in the first arc? Chrom’s problem.

Learning the difference between a King and a Conqueror in the second arc? Chrom’s problem.

Learning that Validar is daddy and that you are the Fell Dragon’s host? Robin’s problem.

Arguably. you could say the most important portion of the game went to Robin, but Chrom was still the lead for a vast majority of the game.

No one hates their Avatar, but I do think it is stupid to suggest Robin over the Lord that was on the game’s freaking box art as the new Fire Emblem rep.

          • Kornelious

I guess that makes sense…I guess I felt that his role was pretty important because what happened in the end. But mostly because the only other game I’ve seen that had a set protagonist AND a avatar protagonist was White Knight Chronicles…..And we all know how much of a role our character played in that game (Hint: None) But Fire Emblem pulls it off awesomely :)

If I had to take a guess, Lucina will be a skin for Marth and Chrom will be the new representative. But hey….Why not both? They have Mario and Luigi, Fox and Falco, Ness and Lucas….Why not Chrom and Robin? :D

          • PragmaticSoul

Having both would be too much. Lucy is very fencing oriented, same as Marth. There’s enough of a difference between Chrom and Marth to put Chrom as his own character.

The reason for having Mario/Luigi and Fox/Falco is that all the reps from their series are from the same game. All the FE reps are from different games, so picking reps is a bit different for them.

          • Astromime

Oh man, Anna deserves that spot. Give me my mascot character Sakurai. Help make the world a better place.

          • PragmaticSoul

Tactician Weapon Selection: Sword and Tome

No, they would not let Robin pull an Erza Scarlet and just start dynamically switching classes mid combat.

Considering the fact that Chrom has an established sword style, while Robin kind of just swings his/her sword and casts fire, I’d say Chrom is the character with more creative potential

          • BlinkingRune

I would never, ever want to play with Robin after some of those bland, forced support conversations. I agree with you, there are so many better ideas for representation.

          • David García Abril

            Lucina, damn it!

        • PragmaticSoul

Robin was a self insert blank slate. If you considered him/her more interesting, it was most likely in your head.

    • Prinnydoom

*Makes same argument above before scrolling down to see this* God dammit -___-

      • k.b.a.

Robin could be amazing except one wild card: Sakurai. Sword and magic?! either super optimized or maximum wacky. No reason for Zelda to only be good in brawl. Though personally robin is third from the bottom in my preferred list. Tops? Lyndis, hector, Ephraim. Eirika. Any magic user. A mercenary. Tired of marth and whoever is the poster boy. Hell I have nothing against a classic character I’d rather sigurd, just… Ugh repetition

        • Ixbran

Why not have Robin wield both?

Spell book in the left hand, and sword in the right. A spell sword style character who uses melee and magic attacks in tandem, akin to Zelda only with sword slashes and such. When picking up and using items, the items could just levitate next too the wielder while glowing with an aura generated by the spell book.

          • k.b.a.

To me its the most obvious choice, but even still something like that can end up in application ridiculous at best and uninspired at worst. By ridiculous I mean things like time charged attacks like wario fart rob laser or silly setups like villager tree. I suppose uninspired isn’t the right word, but I think first of Zelda, the resident mage. I should feel excited playing here, but there’s no flair, even when there is flair. It all remains to be seen. Robin and many other characters could be great. I.e. Project m snake is a better form than brawl snake. It could go any direction.

        • Rasputing

Isn’t Ike heavily based on the Mercenary class (like Lyn with Myrmidons)? Aether even resembles the crit animation for mercenaries.

          • k.b.a.

But a sword and shield tandem fighting style. Especially the mercs huge sheath-shield? Wouldn’t that be potentially more interesting that Ike “I gotta big sword” style? Keyword being potentially.

    • leingod

Wait. These aren’t supposed to have feet.

    • Evil-Antho

I approve of this so very damn much SHUTUPANDTAKEMYENTIRELIFESAVINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I expect them to either put Chrom or Lucina in the game actually though but damn the Tactician would be such a more amazing character! O_O using magic AND swords is all I wish for.

  • Kayseur

Gender options are always a good thing to have. Would be fun if *all* of the characters had something like that — though it’s pretty much impossible haha.

    • I was thinking the same thing. x’D

    • Internet is Crash

You are now imagining Donkey Kong with boobs

  • Aquarius

“That’s my girl, now we can chop heads together…”

    – Mayor of Choppin Time Town

  • thats amazing! a battle with 4x villagers would be amazing!!!

  • Desk

  • Jarbird

Uh, hello Nintendo? Why can’t I play as a gay villager in smash Brothers? I’m boycottin’ this thing.

    • CptPokerface

What ever do you mean? they all look plenty happy to me.

    • Aaron K Stone

None of the villagers have dark skin either…

      • They really need to add that option right on the train instead of pretending that tanning is a viable substitute. vuv;

I mean, even taking away western audiences, that’s kind of a slap to everyone not pale as the moon in Japan.

        • British_Otaku

Something really nice would have been letting the player use models from Animal Crossing 3DS or Wii U (Is that out? I’m sure one was announced or something) in the game.

And again, I don’t consider it that poor a decision if a darker skinned villager isn’t present. Smash Bros may be reflecting a series that as far as I know has a ton of options, but typically we only get 4/5 costumes (default + enough to match each team colour plus extras) per character with the exception of Wario in Brawl. Aside from Wario, some Pokemon and current character, palette swaps was about it with no model or asset changes between looks.

This game isn’t going to reflect everything that it could.

          • Oh, that would have been really cool! Though, I don’t think one is actually confirmed or even announced for Wii U; I think it just works under the assumption that we know it’ll happen because it’s always been on everything after the Gamecube.

Haha, I don’t mean the option in Smash, but that in AC itself they should add some option to allow that on the train. It’d be super easy. Working to get a tan and then hoping to keep it just isn’t efficient and is kind of . . .hurtful, in a way? Lol, I am hurt/disappointed myself, since it’s been this long and it still isn’t an option.

        • GH56734

Realistically, do you expect a fighter to bring up a character editor screen whenever one chooses the villager before starting a match?

          • Huh? I meant in Animal Crossing itself. ouo

    • Wow, really? That’s unnecessary; you don’t need to bring that up, and that tone is not necessary either. :/

      • Nanaki

It’s just an attempt to troll about the whole Tomodachi Life debacle. It’s still unnecessary, I agree.

        • I know, and it’s obnoxious because it’s incredibly short-sighted and narrow-minded. Not to mention bringing needless drama to a fun, drama-free post.

Yeah. People just have to be ~clever~ though.

          • Yeah, why can’t people just say the stuff you want them to say, when you want them to say it? These people act like they have minds of their own. Weird.

          • I know, imagine having differing opinions and feelings and stuff! Even. . . entitlement!? When did people evolve that much!?

        • Jarbird

If the definition of troll is to use satire to illustrate a rediculous level of outrage over the lack of gay characters in a lighthearted kids game by demanding that every subsequent game Nintendo makes now include the same standard, then yes, I suppose I did “troll”. I thought it was called a comment.

    • Do a battle royale of pure Male Villagers and bam, gay party.

      • Too many dicks on the dancefloor stage?

Besides, true equality would be a pair of lesbian villagers and a pair of gay villagers~. (So many Modern Family jokes in my head.)

        • Well, they don’t reaaaally have to state their sexuality me thinks, pair em as you want as long as nothing is established.

  • Huzzah~! When they first mentioned palette swaps or something, I totally figured they’d add female villager(s), and of course the default pink one. Such a qt patootie~. I’ll probably main both the girls now, actually. >u<

    • NeptuniasBeard

  • Will Jay

    Turnip Dress Villager best Villager

  • Addy

  • Prinnydoom

Ok with this recent news, I think we can assume that the whole two genders thing means that both female and male MC from Fire emblem Awakening is a possibility. Sakurai would be crazy not to do it given how well it did.

  • leingod

This brings the necessary question…. what if Zelda was a girl?

  • JohnNiles

Awesome! So many variants- the dewy-eyed “me so kawaii” villager, and the “I don’t sleep” villager.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

It would be awesome if you could get a tan the longer you play as them :D

  • manowaffles

CALLED IT! Even before Wii Fit Trainer showed off her alternate skin as a man, I figured that this would happen.

  • s07195

    If you give a mouse a cookie…

  • Mind0105A

Oh nice, I’m really hyped for the game…

  • Altumn

I kinda figured they would, but i’m annoyed they didn’t have the other guy be the one with the purple droopy eye lids.

  • Yay! How cute!

If only they would announce Ashley, or or Jill, or Lip, or Dixie Kong some day. But I guess Ashley won’t be in this Smash Bros. And Lip won’t be in because her wand was shown.

Well, this is pretty nice anyway.
