Super Smash Bros. Won’t Change Your Colour Depending On Your Team

By Ishaan . May 26, 2014 . 10:02am

Most of last week’s Super Smash Bros. screenshots have already been detailed in separate posts, save for one little tidbit.

Director Masahiro Sakurai posted the above screenshot, stating: “In previous games in the series, if you chose the red team in a team battle, your Mario would have been red. But now you can choose any color you want! The color outlining the characters will show their team affiliation.”

  • Ooh! That’s a rather nice addition! But I actually try to stay away from team battles since they can easily be turned into an unfair one sided match depending who’s on who’s team.
    Still, nice addition nonetheless.

I only play with Team Attack on so 2 v 1 can still be doable if you play your cards right. I’ve done Teams on campus a lot and my partner would die but I’d still manage to pull a victory by manipulating opponents into hitting themselves.

With Team Attack off, yeah it’s pretty unfair as both players can just go nuts.

  • Afro7uffy21

I really don’t see the point of this, It’s cool I guess I don’t think it was ever that hard to tell who was on whose team

    • ronin4life

It wasn’t hard because people were forced into team colors. Now the color is applied to the border instead.

      • idrawrobots

What does it matter what you look like? Isn’t it the character that matters?

        • 하세요

For some, yes. For others, they feel a stronger bond when they use the colors they like the most, like a trademark.

        • Kaitsu

People like to customize. It’s not a problem. It’s just nifty now.

          • idrawrobots

I’m concerned about knowing who is and isn’t on my team more than which color I am.

    • 하세요

I think that’s the purpose. Now there’s just a little line to tell what team you are on and you can enjoy being whatever color palette / alt you want.

    • SlickRoach

I guess it’s just to appeal to the extremely nit-picky players.

      • Oh c’mon, we’re all nit-picky to an extent, don’t lie Slick ;D
For example in driving games – surely people have a colour preference for their cars? Whereas in Smash Bros, it’s more than about colour, but rather references and personal flare.

        • SlickRoach

Driving games are understandable since they usually center around customizing your car to the tiniest details like rim size and engine type while most fighters usually don’t go beyond costumes and color tints.

          • I think you invalidated your own argument right there. There are quite a lot of people that play certain characters in fighting games based on design alone – heck back in Tatsunoko vs Capcom, I mained Tekkaman Blade because he looked badass as f*ck, and subbed Roll because why the heck not!

Try to think of the characters as cars, Bowser would be a Chevrolet, whereas Sonic would likely be a Porsche. The pallets would be the customisation on top of that. It’s not all that hard to picture, but I do get the angle you’re approaching at here.

        • LanceCS

“we’re all nit-picky to an extend [sic].”

          Well not really, no.

  • 하세요

This pleases me, especially when we play teams and I want to pick Kirby. I don’t know why, but I’m adamant on using monochrome Kirby (probably because most of my Kirby history is GB games) and refused to use him on teams because I hate Red / Green / Blue Kirby.

    • Mastery

Agreed. This is probably the biggest reasons I don’t play team battles: I pretty much need to be able to pick my own colors. I usually get distracted and start sucking if it’s not a color I picked personally: Marth NEEDS to be wearing wedding white, Sonic NEEDS those gold bracelets, Mario NEEDS inverted colors and Ness NEEDS his Hot Topic Mr. Saturn shirt.

      • 하세요

There are some characters I didn’t mind any colors for, such as Link / Toon Link since I’m a fan of Four Swords, though I prefer Red and Purple. Zelda, too.

As for Falcon though, Pink Falcon or bust.

  • DeAndre Atchison

Black pit on a red team? I’m cool with that

  • Dark Lord Ash

You’re doing God’s work Sakurai. Bless you sir.

  • friendly neighborhood_dude

Where’s my Chrom Nintendo!? You gave us a gorilla Ike instead of the latest game’s protagonist?

    • lol “Gorilla Ike”. I personally liked the original Ike, too.

      • friendly neighborhood_dude
        • yeah but japanese gamers are also fat shaming the new Godzilla xD

        • Luke Blackwood

That`s just a stereotype problem. Here in the west, where the male character stereotype is big bulky musclehead, RD Ike isn`t overlystrong or something. Since in Japan male characters are usually thin, skinny and with somewhat more feminine features, RD Ike is gorilla-like xd

    • Afternoon Intergalactic

Radiant Dawn Vanguard Ike is best Ike.

    • Timovisch

      We like Ike!

Anyway I haven’t played FE:A so I don’t really care about Chrom but I do think he will be playable.

  • But wait.

What if you turned the outlines off? Or are those forced instead for team battles?

    • Rasputing

Most likely, you just have to remember who’s on your team and who isn’t.

    • Ronldbx6

I didn’t know you could completely turn them off. I thought you could just make them really thin.

  • Based Ignacio Puppo

I… don’t actually like this. Teenage Mutant Ninja TUrtles Smash up went with this approach(But maybe due to laziness since characters didn’t have alternate colors) and, in my opinion, didn’t work too well.

    • 하세요

If it really bothers you, you can always just choose the color along with it. No one’s stopping you from using Blue Mario on Blue Team.

      • ZetaSiren

No man you go red Mario on blue team just to screw with them ;)

        • Internet is Crash

          That Mario’s a SPY!

  • HerosLight

I am completely fine with this.

    I barely play Teams anyways.

  • Lloyd Christmas

Manly Ike, you will be my main.

  • J_Joestar

wait, so will teams add outlines to the Wii U version?

  • Deekei

I think this might push the idea that characters has the ability to change models if you want them to have some sort of stylings. I’m still hoping that you can model change Marth with Lucina/Ike with Chrom.

    • 하세요

I think people are jumping the gun on this. Then again, everyone takes a little bit of info and blows it out of proportion when it comes to a new Smash game.

  • fireemblembeast

Ahhhh more screenshots of Ike~ <3

  • Bandana Dee

I actually did play team battles a bit, and I would always try to match the color of the team with the characther (Red team if Mario, Green team if Link, etc.). So I’m really glad that they did this.

  • Daniel

Anyone actually beat Path of Radiance i managed to yet it felt like a hollow victory to me…that stupid black night bs having it after a pretty lengthy fight (for me at least) and basically only being to beat him if you criticaled the crap outta him, suffice to say i wasnt able to beat him but as fate would have it i recently procured another copy and that s.o.b. is going down
and i was towards the end of the 3rd part of Radiant Dawn before stupid 3rd party memory card decided it hated me and all of my progress

    • RajaNaga

You just have to know to make sure you train Ike and Mist well before that battle. I didn’t beat it my first playthrough, but I MURDERED him on my second.

  • keithmaxx

So now we can have red Luigis, green Marios, pink Rosalinas and blue Peaches? Nice, but confusing. Then again, it wouldn’t matter to the color blind.

  • DoctorButler

Seems unnecessary, but sure, why not.

  • Vash bane

o.O is…is that ike? holy crap he looks awesome

  • Snorlaxation

For those having trouble understanding why this matters:
A very large percentage of this games fans (i’d actually say the majority, that’s what i feel to be true) enjoy all the possible character colors to choose from, the possibility of customization with their fighter (even if it is still kinda limited when you think about it). This transcends to many different games across the gaming spectrum.

Also, considering the game was created with so many color possibilities, (like Dark Link, or fire flower Mario) I think it was the creators desire to have them in there just as much as the fans. This new feature is probably for them too, so everyone can appreciate the work they put in and not have the characters color locked at any time.

For those having trouble understanding why people don’t care about this feature: hey, some people don’t care about this particular level of customization. Either in this game, or others. I personally have battled against friends who never fought/melee’d/brawled with a customized character. They just picked who they wanted, and were ready to go. I wondered why (usually silently) but
Different strokes (of color, in this case?) for different folks.

I personally love bumble bee-looking Ness, and monochrome Zelda (reminds me of maid Sophia from Star ocean 3), and many more. But yeah.

    • If everyone “double-argued” both sides like you just did (is that even a term, &^%$ it, i just invented it just now, so there XD) then we wouldn’t have unnecessary internet forum/comment section squabbles like the kind we see every day, so “jolly-good-show” to you my good sir for that comment. :)

      • Snorlaxation

I whole-heartedly agree! And thank you very much for that :) I appreciate it.
