Final Fantasy III Now Available At Steam Store

Square Enix sure likes tossing re-released ports onto the Steam Store without release dates. Accordingly, Final Fantasy III for the PC is now available for sale on the Steam Store and elsewhere. Last mentioned back in April of this year and price-confirmed earlier this month, the game appeared there and on other digital retailers just this morning.

Final Fantasy III is priced at $15.99/€12.99/£10.99 at the Steam Store, but digital retailers GMG and GameFly Digital both have site-wide 22% off (Update 7/25: Best deal now is 20% Off) codes that work on Steam keys of the game. Details below:

The game has been updated with Steam Trading Cards and the usual Achievement stuff. (Yay?) Screenshots shown at the retailers make it seem likely that the PC port differs very little from the smartphone version, so there won’t be an updated graphical experience as far as I can tell.

If the 20% off isn’t enticing, we suspect the game will eventually reach the 33-50% off level by this holiday season. (It took a while for FF VII and FF VIII, but both titles eventually dropped below the $6 level by around the 10 month mark.) At the pace Square Enix is going, all titles will eventually appear on mobile platforms and the PC – probably not a bad thing for those of us wanting to revisit some nostalgia.

I assume this is PC only? A curse on my Macbook.

    • CBanana

There are lots of ways to play this game on a MacBook. The easiest way would be to set up the BlueStacks emulator and buy/play the Android version.

      • Monterossa

PPSSPP, the PSP emulator will run FF3 better than BlueStacks for sure.

        • CBanana

Maybe, but the PSP unlike Android OS is not open source so emulating it breaks copyright laws. Also, buying a used copy of the PSP FF3 to make it somewhat more legal would be more expensive than buying the Android version..

  • Combo

I’m not too big on FF3, but it’s cool that they’re doing this. Hopefully FF4 will follow soon, although the fact that they’ll probably use the DS/iOS version instead of the great PSP version is kind of a bummer ;v

    • Morricane

That’s because 3D graphics make games automatically better than 2D. (wait…whyyy does this thought remind me of the good old beginning days of the 32-bit consoles? :D)

  • Bunzi

Kind of wish they gave a damn with the achievements – there’s a lot of really crazy/obscure stuff you can do in their RPGs and yet most of the achievements are pedestrian as “learn your last limit break” or “beat this bonus boss.”

    • Monterossa

well this game has a fairly hard list of achievements, picking up all the treasure chests in the game for the example.

  • Internet is Crash

Is the game region free? If it is then I can finally flip my laptop in rage instead of throwing my DS when I die to CoD.

EDIT: Went to Steam Store earlier to check the launch trailer but is inaccessible in my region. I’m in the Philippines.

    • DanijoEX ♬ the Cosmic Owl

Well…only the DS and PSP versions are.

    • Monterossa

the game is not available in Asia but you can buy it from GMG.

Im hoping that FFIV will be releases on Steam. It doesnt look right playing it on my 3DS since my DS broke. FF4 is a great title story and character wise one that many Final Fantasy fans deserve to play, also they can see the original Dragoon Kain and compare how much his armour looks like its FF14 counterpart

  • Quan Chi

And it’s another terrible port unfortunately…
-No graphic options (texture filtering, screen filtering, AA)

    -No gamepad hotplugging

    -No xinput in-game visuals

-No psp version features (gallery, auto-battle)

-Missing motion blur effects when battle is initiated like the DS version

  • Masa

Just bought it…expected it too look better….it looks like poop!

  • Haganeren

    So… It’s a port of a port of a port

    • Sora96

Port of a HD remaster. :)

  • Hmmm, I just spent a lot of money on games for the Wii U. And I going to buy Mario Kart 8 soon.

I’m really looking forward to this, but unfortunately I’m going to need to wait until my next paycheck.
I am really looking forward to it, though!
