Sony To Cover Indie Game Area Costs At Tokyo Game Show

By Ishaan . May 28, 2014 . 11:32am

Sony Computer Entertainment will foot the exhibition costs for developers at the Tokyo Game Show’s Indie Game Area this year, the company has announced. (Thanks, Gamasutra)

Applicants can begin applying now, and the ones that are selected will be able to showcase their games at the Indie Game Area. Due to Sony cutting a deal with the TGS organizers, these developers will not have to pay exhibition costs themselves.

Additionally, Sony’s Brad Douglas clarified via his Twitter account that Sony have no say in what games get selected for the indie area—that decision is entirely up to the show’s organizers, so non-PlayStation games are covered as well.

“We don’t care if the game is on a PlayStation platform or not,” Douglas tweeted. “The more indie games, the better! Just bring cool stuff!”

Tokyo Game Show will be held from September 18th – 21st this year.

  • That’s… really cool of them! Good job Sony.

  • Jason

    Bro move by sony =D

  • Ninjagoon

  • Eder García

“We don’t care if the game is on a PlayStation platform or not” the games will end up in a PS platform anyway.

    • darke

Yeah, that’s the benefit of an easy ported to platform. “Game looks good. Xbox/PC only? Whatever. Here, have a dev kit and see how you do.” :P

  • kyrt

great move by sony…they definitely seem to be the most friendly indie wise of the developers. Nintendo isn’t too far behind but I am surprised Indie Developers even bother trying with Microsoft.

    • subsamuel01

Microsoft is definitely the worst when it comes to dealing with indies but they are the next best option in terms of install base so I guess indies don’t have much of a choice.

  • Kai2591

    Good Guy Sony

  • VeniVidiVici

Damn Sony. Wasn’t expecting you to actually PAY for the exhibition costs. I guess there are some people who aren’t greedy ALL the time. Good on you.

  • urbanscholar

    Very classy

  • 하세요

I really like that promotional poster.

    • Yeah, it’s the first time in many years that I’ve actually liked the TGS mascot. Last year’s design in particular was terrible.

      • ishyg

I agree. The Supporter’s Club free shirt is kind of terrible too. I don’t get the horn stuff.

  • otakumike

After this they’ll pay for the drinks and hookers!

    • zaidandzhadow

  • Hexodious

If they keep this up they might even localize Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, God Eater 2 and the upcoming Digimon Cyber Sleuth themselves for free!

    …Okay, that’s just wishful thinking.

    • darke

I see no indie games there; so I’m sure some company will pay for the localisation themselves if they figure it’s profitable.

    • PreyMantis

Don’t even start with me; I’m almost at my tipping point…

  • Somebodyissilent

    Way to go Sony!

  • new_tradition

That’s great. I hope we see a push for Japan-made Indie games too.

  • devilmaycry0917

this is for the Indies, this is IndieStation 4!!!!

  • ishyg

This’ll be the first time since I arrived in Japan that I wouldn’t be on TGS. T_T
F***ing Shimane transfer. Why does it have to be so far, on the 47th most famous prefecture of Japan?!

Good Guy Sony. Hope I have a business trip that week, so that I can go.

  • Kornelious

Now that is how to be a good company. Way to go! :D

  • Thats nice of them
