What can I say, I’m pretty attached to the old anime’s designs, they where honestly very well suited for the kind of series sailor moon was.
This on the other hand is much closer to Naoko’s style and that’s a good thing, but it sort of makes me and (I suppose) many other fans of the old series feel kinda disconnected or put off by it, kind of like how some us felt about the Hunter x Hunter remake of 2011, though that series turned out to be as good as the older one, and maybe even more with the addition of the newer manga content turned into fantastic episode, which of course won’t happen with sailor moon.

    • Shippoyasha

I don’t see how anyone could be put off by HxH. It’s like people being ‘put off’ by the new JoJo shows for not being the exact same as the OVA.

I think some people are being a tad melodramatic about the change. Yeah, things are different now. But I think most fans can take to the differences. It’s been like 20 years. It would be really abnormal if they stuck 100% to the old style. Even Slayers had a bit of a change when it finally got a new season a few years ago.

      • MaidKillua

People will always have nostalgia blinders no matter what it is that’s being remade/ rebooted/ brought back. It’s just the way things go. Like, I would personally go as far as to say that HxH 2011 and the new Jojo are both more enjoyable than both the older versions AND the manga, but some people would decry them as utter trash for not being exactly the same as previous versions in every possible way. These people probably also enjoyed every single re-release of Dragonball Z -.- lol

    • Judging by Tumblr it’s a bit of a split. I’m iffy, but I’m also hella excited for it. However the eyes look ..vacant to compare from the old anime.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

        No they don’t

  • VWinds

It looks like the manga walked off the page, animated and in color.

  • DungeonRPG

sounds like mitsuishi kotono is back
    i’m happy…

    • Aunna Terrell

She is. She’s the only returning cast member so far.

      • M’iau M’iaut

But will she play Usagi this time as a drunk mech mechanic?

    So many memories…so many parodies.

    • M’iau M’iaut

4 VAs voices nearly ruined — in both JP and ENG.

    • fyi1191

Oh yea, so many memories of those large shoulder pads.

  • How has it been since Ive logged in? Anyway, already saw this on tumblr. While I’m ecstatic about SM: Crystal and while the style is Naoko’s aesthetics there was something that bothered me about the new designs (besides her long legs) and I realized what it was.

It’s the eyes. The eye style looks vacant compare to the old anime.

Not sure if anyone mention this, but while VIZ got the license to BSSM, it wont probably see dubbed to some time next year at the earliest., I’m calculating it right, since it’s two episodes a month. *still on the Hype Train*

    • Aunna Terrell

idk, since it’s only 2 episodes a month, Viz could~ catch up. But first, they need to do the 200 episodes, the movies, and all the specials. Though we’re getting the dub cast list sometime soon. (Anime Expo, I believe?)

      • My bad. I meant Sailor Moon Crystal. That’s being aired twice a month.

        • Aunna Terrell

Oh, I know, lol. I DID say only 2 episodes a month. The original anime is 2 episodes per week on Mondays.

          • Oh okay, ^^ I know about the episodes on Mondays, Been watching it religiously, every Monday so far! I rather wait for Crystal to finish airing, before any dubbing is discussed. Though I have a feeling that the new dub for the old anime would voice the Crystal.

          • Aunna Terrell

Yes, I figured it would be too. Especially since Viz is advertising that the new dub is approved by Takeuchi herself.

          • Yeah, yeah! I heard about that. I heard from my meetup group that Takeuchi needed them to sing as well.

  • Okay now, I’ll admit: Some of the bits look awkward animated. Especially the obvious “expression having transformed the first time” part, which really looks… Strange.

But I’m still super excited about this. I’m excited to see a lot of the things I enjoyed about the manga getting animated. I’m excited to see how this plays out.

Also, can I just say I liked the little touch of Usagi putting the hairpins into one of her buns? It’s like her hair makes sense, now!

Edit: As a note for folks interested, it was confirmed at least that Sailor Moon Crystal will be hosted on Crunchyroll for streaming! It was announced at Fanime. This has been the only note on distribution over here so far.

    • I’ve been super hyped for a while now…especially since I heard the version of the OP sung by MomoClo…

      • Haha, yeah. Admittedly, I’m surprised this isn’t gonna be the opening song as-is!

        • Yea, they’ll probably cut it like I did here…

          Like I said, I was super hyped…perhaps a little much…

        • Aunna Terrell

The new opening (Moon Pride) is sampled in the trailer.

          • Yeah, I figured that. It’s why I said I’m surprised this isn’t the opening instead. XD

          • Aunna Terrell

The ending was announced too, lol. I wonder if that’ll be in the next trailer? They still have Artemis and the baddies to announce.

        • Wait! This isn’t the opening! D:

      • I wasn’t too sure about MomoClover since I literally never heard of them before until the very first announcement. Then the live cover of Moonlight Denetsu happened…

But I’m already in love with this song and I want it. Now.

    • It does! For me personally, and I’ve said already, but its the eyes. Their eyes aren’t expressive enough to match.

Then again I’m judging by the trailer and art designs I’ve seen floating around on tumblr.

      • Shippoyasha

Eyes looks great to me. Doesn’t Tumblr complain about every little thing?

        • Aunna Terrell

Like the fabulous rant and boycotting of how Viz isn’t using DiC’s names?

          • Good lord that is the most ridiculous boycotting. Though I’ve seen a worse one now. (There’s a tumblr now going on a food strike against NISA for splitting DR1+2 Reload for the West, and it’s actually a lot more worrying than funny.)

          • I’m just now hearing about the boycott. Are you serious.

I saw the hunger strike. Im like..

          • It’s seriously ridiculous, and it’s… seriously worrying. No one should really do something like that. I hope someone around them at least talks sense into them.

          • It’s one thing not liking how a game (or anime) was dubbed, but to go on a Hunger Strike because of it! That person needs help.

The person who ran the blog even said that they wont get help until NISA doesn’t touch Dangan Ronpa or something like that and Im just. I hope that whoever that person lives (hopefully parents) will send them to the a psych ward because it’s beyond stupid and attention seeking and riddled with entitlement.

          • Pinkemon

I decided to assume that the food strike tumblr is a troll for the sake of my faith in humanity.

          • Tienron

welll when you have grown up with names then they suddenly change to suit the japanese version it will piss people off, its like suddenly changing megamans name to rockman??? i think the names were fine and it’s what people were use to

          • Considering that one of their arguments is that “Usagi” isn’t a real name (and that it should always be rendered as “うさぎ”, cause to them, romanization shouldn’t exist), I’m more on the side of entirely disregarding them.

Show me this. I would rather not Google this if I don’t have to.

          • – Here’s their site.

I tried to look up their tumblr, but either they edited it or they stopped answering all of the people telling them how ridiculous it was. Either way, it does seem legitimate on their own part, as they’ve been wanting “Serena” for years.

          • I am so glad I live a normal life.

          • persona_yuji

Now wait just a sec… I don’t really know much about Sailor Moon, but isn’t “Serena” just the dubbed version’s name for Usagi?
Just what in the name of all that is sane is going on here!? I mean, if it was a completly different character I guess I could kinda know what the complaints were about, but if it’s the SAME character, what’s the fuss about?!

          • No, Usagi mean rabbit. BLame the translator fr changing every name character. Just imagine Gon to be name Luke in english version anime.

          • persona_yuji

I know that usagi mean rabit, I mean Usagi as in Usagi Tsukino.

          • Blame the translator for changing the names.

          • Aunna Terrell
          • Ah yes, there it is.

          • Gracias. I will use this information well.

          • Aunna Terrell

If you visit her main page, she also responded to some people who sent her mail.

          • Tis the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen in recent years as an anime fan.

I grew up watching “the classics” back then as a kid, Sailor Moon being one of them, and I for one am happy we are getting the original uncut version of the show which includes a new dub with the characters’ actual names.

“Serena” was used to bring us to where we are today: to appreciate this “anime” we knew nothing about back then with a more open mind due to “americanized” changes whether minor or major and today we can not only continue this but embrace the original show we have come to appreciate from way back then.

Seriously tho, if the people back then who really DID literally “grow up” watching Sailor Moon as it aired during those times are throwing a fit NOW about a name change back to it’s original form and are complaining, then they really haven’t grown up after all these years and are still living in the past.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

It’s really weird too since she’s trying to use racism as a reason for why it should be left alone, because apparently trying to keep names japanese would exclude other nationalities.

          • Tienron

i can understand where she is coming from, in all honesty they should of changed the voices but kept the names the same because its what people grew up with, it donst matter about the original because it’s still original content. i for one think bunny is a stupid name… but in English she was called serena so i didnt mind a bit. but now thats all gone

          • Guest

            *goes to link*

Wow… dumbest shit I’ve seen since the invention of the USB Pet Rock…

          • Don’t because it’s utterly ridiculous

          • I wouldn’t call it fabulous… that’s giving the poster and its legion of followers way too much credit XD

          • Aunna Terrell

            lol sarcasm. :3

        • I figured that was their mantra to do just that.

        • True, but this what I’m concerned with. If it looks great for you, by all means be happy. I just find that the eyes look static. But I’m reserving full judgment until I’ve seen the first couple of episodes at the viewing party my Sailor Moon meetup group is supposed to do.

          • Shippoyasha

I think people are being too harsh on the new style personally. Especially some sites using cycled animated gifs of Usagi being dumbfounded as the ‘proof’ that she looks empty-eyed. Kind of an unfair conclusion if you ask me.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

            They are

        • lol never take tumblr seriously my friend, it’s not worth doing so XD

Trailer looks ok, but like the guy a few posts back said: some trailers make a show better than what you initially hoped for and in this case, it’s quite the opposite.

Trust me, they ain’t gonna come out guns blazing on a simple trailer, especially the first one. We’re just getting a sample here of how great it’s really gonna be :)

      • Yeah, I don’t think the trailer’s ever a good example for things. I’ve seen some baaaaad anime trailers. (The World God Only Knows one that came out as the initial trailer was TERRIBLE.) And the artwork is a bad example too since they’re sorta meant to not be very expressive. They’re examples/poses, that’s all.

I think when we get the actual episodes going we’ll actually get more expressive motions about things, at the least. I can see the complaint about the eyes being expressionless compared to things, but admittedly… We’re also not seeing the more humorous portions where such things will be more obvious, in this trailer.

        • Trailers are just that trailers. (why do I sound mean o.o) I’m waiting for the first few episodes (then again at the viewing party) before I make judgment.

Actually wait scratch that. I’ll reserve judgement when the last episode for Crystal airs.

          • Ha, well hey, as long as you give the show a chance before truly judging! I hope you and your viewing party enjoys it though.

          • That’s my stance anyway! ^^ Thanks! I’m sure we will.

    • I thought Viz confirmed that it would be on Neon Alley too?

      • Neon Alley actually has not been confirmed yet! Crunchyroll is actually the only place where it’s been confirmed, and it was after the initial announcement.

Neon Alley was only confirmed for original Sailor Moon.

        • Oh, huh. I thought I saw it mentioned too in their interview. That’s a shame~. (But at least we know that they also have the rights to it, so we’ll get some kind of other release!)

  • TheManWithPants

Maaaaaaan, it’s been YEARS since I’ve last seen Sailor Moon. Barely remember anything about it, haha. I’ll be sure to check this out when it’s released.

    • If you want a reminder on the series, check out Hulu! They’re putting up two episodes a week on Mondays now for streaming. They just got to the episode with Sailor Mercury.

      • M’iau M’iaut

I’d prefer they spend time with StarBlazers.

  • fyi1191

Geez, you made me somewhat interested in it now.

  • I fee a slight kick to the stomach to see how well this is made. Sigh I wish they did the same thing with Dragon Ball Kai. But eh

    • Anime10121

Why would Toei waste time remaking DB when they can simply repackage it a thousand times and it STILL sells like crack :P

      • A fan can only dream can they… A fan can dream…. Plus I really dont mind It’s almost like spilled milk. No worries right?

  • All right, so let me ask doods: say I’d venture into this series… should I wait for this reboot, which adapts the original manga or do I go start on the original anime, which is getting Hulu streams every week? ‘Cuz while I am aware of this series, never got a chance to see episodes. All I can remember from my childhood is Dragon Ball Z and Yu Yu Hakusho. That’s about it XD

    • The original series is really up to you.

Now, the original one is close to many people’s hearts– and I think it’s entirely worth going through, especially now that it’s getting put up in it’s entirety at a reasonable pace. But it’s a long series, and there are a LOT of faults with it. But it has it’s bright points, too.

Best I can truly say is to go through the first season and see if you like it, otherwise, don’t force yourself on it. But at least you can have a good comparison point as a result.

      • All right, thanks for the tips. Anyway, got lots of time on me so we’ll see what the fuss is all about.

        • You’re welcome. Enjoy the show, at least!

          • All right. Even if I’m a dude, a male… I’ll give it a shot. I’ve watched a lot of things many call cheesy these last few years, so hey, no problem for me.

          • Dude, who cares if you’re a dude! There a plenty of dudes in my Sailor Moon group that love it! So if you decide to venture into, like because you like. Who cares if you’re a guy.

          • XD It’s like the thing with MLP. So if there are Bronies… there Broilor XD hahahaha okay I’ll just stop.

Better be prepped when my neighbor sees me watch Sailor Moon. He told me Clannad and After Story were cheesy and yet he’s in disbelief how I “survived” that. XD funny… I like Clannad and After Story. Ah well, to each their own.

All right, thanks for the encouragement.

          • Nanaki

Did you just compare the male-audience of Sailor Moon to My Little Pony?
No. Please, stop there. Watch the anime. Then you’ll realize how silly that sounded.

          • XD no no no I didn’t mean it like that. hahaha XD no no. I didn’t mean it like that. Just a joke. After all, Sailor Moon came out YEARS before MLP so sorry.

I already knew how silly it sounded when I read what I wrote. XD Man, gotta be careful with what I write.

    • Aunna Terrell

If you DO start with Crystal, please understand that it’s only 2 episodes a month for 13 months. So you have a long wait.

      • Ooohhh… 2 episodes a month? Quite a long wait…. All right, will think this through.

        • Anime10121

I vote the original (though if you want the legit shit, watch the subs, as a LOT of stuff was changed in the dub), simply for the fact that you get more time with the characters and they’re all great characters to spend time with! Plus, with the original, you get the whole story, outer senshi and all, and not just a focus on the first arc.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

The original anime is twice the size and would take longer to complete if you aren’t going to be marathon more then 50 episodes at at time.

        • Aunna Terrell

I understand that. But it’s still easier to find the whole original anime series (especially in Italy; they got the remaster before anyone else outside Japan) than waiting for 2 episodes a month for Crystal.

  • デ オオカミ

The anorexia is strong in these pretty soldiers.

    • Anime10121

Thin does NOT equal anorexic :/

  • Suicunesol

Oh boy… here it is… this might be tough to watch, but I must.

Yeah, it’s the eyes. They say the eyes are the windows into the soul, and it’s no different for anime characters. The 90s anime eyes were really big and expressive with all manner of eye reflections and detailed, lusty eyelashes. The original anime didn’t stick to one eye style either. Their whole faces changed shape when they got angry or sad, just like cartoon characters, and it made them very, very animated. That’s why I’m worried that sticking too much to Takeuchi’s face style will result in their faces becoming stiff.

Also, I’m sad that Moonlight Densetsu will not be the theme song.

    • I won’t say anything on the eyes, since I went into detail elsewhere here on my thoughts on it but.

Man, I am sad too that Moonlight Densetsu won’t be the theme! I mean, yeah, I’ll have to live with it and all, but it’s one of those things that sticks.

Though it reminds me of back when I was watching through the whole series subbed– when I got to Stars, I was so bothered, because suddenly the theme song changed! Imagine being younger like that and having that trust crushed, man. :(

      • Kumiko Akimoto

I wish the opening was something I could enkoy,

    • I’M GLAD IT WASN’T JUST ME ABOUT THE EYES!. Sorry the caps.

    • Raymond

At lest he’s not this guy. XD

      • Uhhhh… is that some kind of metaphorical sequence or is the guy really that Titan-like XD

        • Shippoyasha

Slightly metaphorical. The guy is a genuine monster. He would fit in perfectly with any number of horror or action story. Really great villain.

    • Shippoyasha

Well, Momoiro Clover is a good band doing the theme song. I have faith in them.

    • Göran Isacson

You and me both about the eyes, man. They just stare ahead. Like empty wells.

  • jugss

Is Sailor Venus holding a sex toy?

    • No god the image now. Yet it fits her…

But now it’s from the manga. Forgot the actual name for it but she uses it in her attacks like a whip.

      • It’s the Venus Chain! (such a simple name, I know.)

        • Suicunesol

          Venus Love-me Chain!

        • I knew it Venus something xD I always said Venus Whip tho!

  • So happy to be able to watch this in 2014. Sailor Moon was an anime I always loved to watch, and umpteen years later here it is again. Can’t wait to see where they’re going to go with the series from here. Also after watching the trailer, my first reaction was

  • Arcade Bumstead

    Twice a month what

    • Aunna Terrell

Think of it like Initial D Fifth Stage that ran from November 2012 to May 2013. That was two episodes a month on a PPV channel in Japan, lol. But those aired back to back on the same day, unlike SMC airing on the first and third Saturdays for 13 months.

  • Alestaos

Looks so awesome man i loved the original so much so im glad it looks beauitful. It truly does look like the manga, thats amazing im super exicted. Hoping it does all the manga i wanna see the heartbreaking scenes,in this form as well as the outer scouts!!

  • Those faces are awful, but it looks very nice otherwise. I’m bothered by the lack of TOAST and Moonlight Densetsu. It’s on of those songs that would work perfectly even in modern J-Pop style.

    • Aunna Terrell

Well, since this isn’t a reboot of the anime, but just a new adaptation of the manga that was released at the same time the anime was made, of course they wouldn’t re-use the song Moonlight Densetsu.

      • The song itself grew out to be much more than just the opening to an anime. In a sense, remaking the song would’ve been a true tribute to everything Sailor Moon.

    • InvestedInYourFuture

There’s no toast in the manga, since it would not fit manga-Usagi’s personality.

  • aizen310

Well… I like the eyes. The Sailors look more refined now. It is strange at first glance, but it’s more faithful.

Also, epic guitar riff at the end? Will this be in the opening?

Mmm… may the ero mangakas get new inspiration by this new series 3:)

  • TheDarkEmpress

    Sailor Mercury <3!!!

    • Freakmasta

damn straight. All those other sailors got nothing.

  • artemisthemp
  • Keiko Haaaaan~!

  • I remember watching DIC’s dubbing as a kid, then watching the subbed versions, and then reading manga. I <3 them all but the manga is still my favorite way to get my Moony fix. Here's hoping this new anime is like the manga.

    • doubleO7

From what I’ve heard, Crystal will closely follow the manga. Its basically meant to be the SM equivalent of FMA: Brotherhood.

      • Just Tim

A la DBZ Kai, back in 2009?

        • doubleO7

Kinda, but it really leans more towards FMA:B, which was a brand new series that stuck closely to the manga. DBZ Kai was mostly comprised of footage from the old DBZ anime re-cut and edited to fit the manga’s plot.

The new SM is definitely not reusing footage from the 90’s anime.

  • I’m so excited! I love Sailor Moon!

  • Alexander Marquis Starkey

The characters look like sticks…model sticks…

  • Nue

I don’t think Sailor Moon ever drove an SUV

  • Michael Richardson

Same wispy, anorexic character designs as the manga. They look beautiful when animated. I’m curious to see where this will be going.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    simply beautiful……

  • fairysun

Damn, I forgot how long their legs are for junior high school girls.

  • Slayven19

    I’m ready, bring it on!

  • icup ✔️

i prefer the 90s anime round face design. this looks pretty low budget.

    • doubleO7

It looks like the original manga.

      • icup ✔️

notice the two huge highlights in the eyes and the small lines on her cheek. the reboot looks like the original you say…

        • doubleO7

Ok, I admit, side-by-side there are some notable differences, but the 2014 anime is still a much closer match to the manga designs than the 90’s anime, eye highlights notwithstanding.

  • John Hayabusa

It has the same style but brand new. I would love to watch this.

  • J_Joestar

It looks so classic Shoujo (although i guess that does make sense that it would)

  • Oltheros

Did they keep the voice actors? Sounds like it, pretty cool

    • Aunna Terrell

Only Usagi has the same actress. Everyone else announced has been recasted.

      • Suicunesol

Didn’t Luna’s VA come back too?

        • Aunna Terrell

Nope. She’s recasted too. Luna and Tuxedo Mask’s seiyuu were announced during the NicoNico stream this trailer premiered. Luna is being voiced by Ryou Hirohashi (Aria, Clannad, Mysterious Girlfriend X, Star Driver, Working) and Tuxedo Mask is being voiced by Kenji Nojima (Highschool DxD, Psycho-Pass, Shakugan no Shana, Zero no Tsukaima).

  • Göran Isacson

Colors are neat, but man them fish-eye stares. Hope the actual show has a lot more wacky and lively animation, like the old one.

Also, regarding everyone’s comments about Venus chain, well… she’s always been an imaginative one.

  • MaskedHeroxx

What no fan service -_- no thx

    • Shippoyasha

I miss the free wheeling days of 90s anime. Too much politics with anime these days.

      • Just Tim

        Western-style politics…

      • MaskedHeroxx

I agree … if I like a anime I like it, if I dont just dont simple as that

Some ppl just try so hard

  • OniLuigi

I love these colors, they’re very vivid! Like some fans, I don’t like the skinny limbs. They were too skinny for me in the official art and the trailer didn’t make them better. It seems they’re going for a slightly elongated look which also exaggerates the fingers. The defined fingers are nice, because it will make the Senshi’s hand gestures really pop right before they do their attacks.
So they’re trying to emulate the manga with the skinny legs? Alright, but the legs and arms are little too skinny for my taste. The score and theme song are pretty exciting though.

  • Kuromadou

maybe i’m the only one here who doesn’t care about moonlight densetsu being replaced because i’m so happy that Revo is the one who work for the new opening :)

  • zeta
