Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse Shows Off New Items And Bosses

By Ishaan . June 9, 2014 . 2:10pm

WayForward Technologies have released a new trailer for Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, which is now in development for both Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse is inspired by the Metroid games in the sense that it will feature an interconnected world and require you to acquire different kinds of items in order to access new areas in the game.

The 3DS version will feature stereoscopic 3D, while the Wii U version will utilize HD artwork. Both versions of the game will support a touch-based inventory management and a real-time mapping system on the second screen.

Additionally, the Wii U version of the game will also support off-TV play.

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse will be released in late Summer.

Dem sexy sprites yo, good looks amazing

The wait has been long, but is going to totally worth it, just release the game this year please.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

All them breasts and ass. Can’t wait for this. Gameplay looks so fluid now that magic is gone and I’m hyped for the soundtrack.

Join forces with risky? does that mean we will be able to play as her? anyway it looks great, getting it for wii u day 1.

    • I think that was mentioned before. Yes.

  • She’s been a Nintendo Exclusive character for a long time now. I believe she should be allowed to be a playable newcomer in Smash Brothers. That WayForward decided to have some of the other games in some other platforms last year, it shouldn’t matter as an opposing factor to the idea.

  • Ethan_Twain

I… think I would rather play the 3DS version. I actually own a Wii U so I could play the console version of this, but the thought of WayForward layering all their sprites they do so well in a ton of 3D Layers just sounds really appealing! Besides, it’ll be cool to have the entire Shantae trilogy on my 3DS together.

Edit: By the way, since most people haven’t played the Gameboy Color original I’ll just mention that there are a ton of throwbacks to that game tucked away in this trailer. It’s the kind of fanservice nudge you might see in a Mario game, except Shantae is super niche. I kind of love that they’re including those callbacks for the VERY few people who will get them though :)

I see some enemies that were in the first game but not in Risky’s Revenge (like those dark shadow blobs and the zombies), an action sequence in Scuttle Town (looks like an assault by the Ammo Baron rather than Risky Boots this time), a kicking attack instead of just hair whipping, a snow area, a BARRACUDA JOE (lol) coming out a waterfall, genie statues depicting the genies like in the ending of the first game, those mouths that launch Shantae in a certain direction until she hits a wall and I think that’s it. :P

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

Conclusion? Then what does that make 1/2 Genie-Hero?

    • It comes after this one. And that one has multiple storylines. Some of which could be standalone.

    • D-Omen

When asked, WayForward stated this is the conclusion of a “pixel trilogy” of sorts for Shantae. Half-Genie Hero is a new beginning, either set afterwards or as a reboot (we’ll know when that comes out).

      • Göran Isacson

The “pixel trilogy” being the first game for the GBA, Risky’s Revenge and now this, I take it?

        • wyrdwad

First game was GBC, actually. Kickin’ it old-school!

  • rurifan

This game looks extremely fun, but my eyes cry at the pixelated art. Surely they could’ve at least given a teaser of it in HD.

Is there any reason to think this won’t hit PS4/xbone eventually (contractual issues etc)?

    • CozyAndWarm

Don’t you be talkin s*** about pixel art, I will fight you

      • rurifan

They said this coming will be in HD on WiiU, which says the original assets are HD. Scaling them down to junk resolution makes them better?

        • Michael Synodis

Lol, no this game was developed first with pixel art. It is apparently being redrawn in HD like they did to the Mighty Switch Force series.

You can’t actually scale down HD art into genuine pixel art. It would look… atrocious.

  • D-Omen

I got the main artwork out of the video at full resolution! Eat it up, folks! :D

    • Namuro

Thank you, kindly! Shantae looks extra cute in this picture!

Also now I face a dilemma of which console to get this on, HD graphics? or 3D? that’s tough… I have a linked account, so I wonder if I can just have both? lol.

  • alixraen

Really loving the new art style!

  • zzzSleeping

    Looks gorgeous.

This game look like so much fun
