Here’s A First Look At Pac-Man In Super Smash Bros.

By Sato . June 10, 2014 . 9:37pm

Siliconera attended the presentation with director Masahiro Sakurai for the new Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, where they revealed that Pac-Man is a playable character in the upcoming games. The new trailer gives us a first look at his fighting style.

Pac-Man hungers for battle, and he immediately shows us some of his moves that involve the fruits and ghosts from the classic Namco arcade game. As previously reported, Pac-Man can shoot water from his fire hydrant and also turn into his arcade self as a side attack.

Looks like Kirby might also have some eating competition, as Pac-Man can also grow huge and eat things. Sakurai also emphasized Pac Man’s older design over the new one, as he’s one of the oldest characters in games.

“On that day, Smashkind received a grim reminder. We lived in fear of the Pac-Men and were disgraced to fight them in these cages we called Final Destination.” (pic.)

    • Cheesy12

Sonic is blue, Mario has blue suspenders, and Megaman is blue. Poor pacman, he just wants to be like everyone else, he was just created the wrong color ;(

  • Lilburrito

The four most iconic video game mascot characters of all time duking it out in one game. Please Nintendo… Take my money… TAKE ALL OF IT. Heck take my credit card and house while your at it as well! If you want, I can even throw in my future virtual waifu while I’m at it!!! That’s just how big this is!

    • Hector Velar

I was thinking the same, I never tough that in my lifetime I will see such miracle. But if it had to happen it had to be on a Nintendo system, that I knew.

  • notentirelythere

Those super cute animations (especially the stalls) and Namco nostalgia trips immediately warmed me up to this. When pics were getting tossed around with Game & Watch and him circa the Ghostly Adventures I WAS WORRIED but this’s got me hyper than hype. I’m sure he’ll work as a retro Namco loveletter.
Which is more powerful, though? G&W’s hammer #9 or a Xevious base to the face?

  • idrawrobots

    LOL, at Pac-Kirby!

  • Then, the circle is complete. All four icons of the video game industry altogether in one game.

  • Still no Konami rep. Bring a Belmont! That way, with their powers combined, they can summon Captain N!

    • yomachaser

      I like how you think!

    • Hector Velar

or Ryu Hayabusa from Tecmo/Koei , lets face it there has not been a single most kick arse ninja than him, back in the 8 bit Ninja Gaiden was king and still king, Black Mantra then later Shinobi gave him some competition but he still out there ruling the ninja games.

      • With all the team ups between Nintendo and Tecmo (and specifically Team Ninja) lately, this is one thing I feel I have been realistically hoping for… maybe even more than Bayonetta being added. The only thing that put a thorn in that foot for me was when greninja was announced. It’s been far too long since Hayabusa has walked along a 2D plane, I’m dying to see that happen again.

And Castlevania seriously needs some loving lately. Everyone talks about Mega Man being dead but I feel like Castlevania’s been non-existent since Harmony of Despair back in 2011. At least Mega Man’s had regular VC releases and other nods here and there… but I admit that for one entry from the Konami camp it’d be a tough choice between Bomberman and a Belmont.

        • Shia will be confirmed. She’s one of the 3rd outsourced characters to be inserted into the Zelda Canon, after all.

      • NTaiyokun

See, opinions like these is why half the fanbase got unhappy when Pac Man was confirmed

Remember that Snake only made it in because he was REQUESTED by Hideo.

    • Kaitsu

Bomberman is owned by Konami. I’m putting my powers towards him.

messed up……..soo messed up.. senpai didnt want to notice

    • Robert Kupper

I am actually okay with the new sonic design, but lets be honest, all three of these are fallen idols, left behind in the streets, broken alone and drunk.

  • Bandana Dee

I have to admit that Pac-Man looks more interesting and fun to play than what I thought he would be.
Out of all the new characters I am definitely looking forward to play as him the most. :)

  • Lloyd Christmas

I, for one, love his inclusion. Keep hating internet.

    • I’m frankly quite surprised by the backlash.. is it just young whipper snappers? lol… Actually Pacman was released before my time too.. my parents told me about how they played pac-man on my uncle’s atari. I didn’t get around to finally playing Pac-man until the early 2000s, followed by Pac-Man World 2, Pac-Man VS, and recently Championship Edition which has become one of my most favorite games. But even if he hasn’t had as much success as he’s had since his first game, that first game is still a tremendous masterpiece of gaming which I still love to play till this day. Hell, just his iconic stage being added is enough reason for his inclusion to be awesome.

Just add Tetris in some form and this is the best Smash Bros ever, imo. I don’t need Melee or Brawl again, I love how crazy this one is turning out. The way things are going I’d expect the freaking Punching Bag to become playable before an obscure badass rpg sword-wielder, and I’m finding that awesome.

      • Lloyd Christmas

It’s just the nature of the internet at this point. Anything and everything will get hated on. Watch, if the cure for cancer were to be found tomorrow I can bet there would be someone out there would complain.

Also Tetris stage. It could work.

        • I just remembered that there was one or two awesome renditions of classic Tetris music in Brawl, for some reason or another that made it in… so I wouldn’t say a stage would be out of the question. Or even a tetris item… or playable Alexey Pajitnov! He was actually in one of his own games before, believe it or not…

        • God

That’s quite a strange theory, considering that none of the other characters, not even the Villager, recieved any kind of backlash, it’s just some people like only the old Pac-Man, and feel like he isn’t really a fighting character…

      • Judgephoenix

I like his moveset so I give him a thumbs up. He has a nice Sonic and Mario feel.

    • anthony apduhan

Hate? LOL! his perfect! 1 more 3rd party character for Konami and then it’s a done deal!

  • SetzerGabbiani

    Dat black Zero Suit!

  • Ethan_Twain

Well, that’s kind of it for an era isn’t it? That’s every significant video game console mascot up through… up until Castlevania and Final Fantasy I guess. And Dragon Quest in Japan. But those are kinda second wave NES games. A little bit more advanced, a little more ambitious in aesthetic.

Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest are obviously never going to happen in Smash because Square Enix is busy trying to monetize that nostalgia themselves, but I could kinda see a generic whip dude from Castlevania showing up. There are a lot of those games on Nintendo platforms and “2D platform heroes who use a distinctive weapon” are kind of Smash Bros’ bread and butter.

I don’t really care which Castlevania hero shows up, I think it just has to be one with a whip for nostalgia reasons. Maybe the one from IV? Simon’s Theme is pretty rad music.

    • Aisha Lee

I won’t go so far in saying that we couldn’t see a Square-Enix character in Smash Bros. because Nintendo and Square-Enix have actually worked together in the past (i.e Square-Enix -at the time named Squaresoft- help develop Super Mario RPG, not only helped develop Mario Hoops 3 on 3 but also had playable Final Fantasy characters in the game, and Nintendo having a cross-over Mario party game with Dragon Quest characters in the form of Fortune Street). So I say there is still a chance.

      • Michael Cortorreal

But exactly, what character would go from Square?
I once thought of Sora from KH, with a moveset made from his Chain of Memory game (in that game he had A LOT of moves).
Also thought of an old FF character like Cecil…but then no one else came to mind.

        • Aisha Lee

Well Cloud came to mind for me

          • Michael Cortorreal

Not possible, since Sakurai said something like “the characters that appears in this game, made an appeareance in a Nintendo System” Cloud not even remotely close to that, -.- would be easier for one of the FFIII, IV and Crystal Chronicles to make the cut than Cloud.

          • Aisha Lee

Well Pac-Man never really debut on any Nintendo system and the Metal Gear series where import to their console along with that Sonic isn’t even remotely related to Nintendo other then Sega once being Nintendo’s rival. Cloud just came to mind for me because of the Iconic path Nintendo has been going with this game, but they could probably use a Dragon Quest character or one of the Original class in Final Fantasy. Heck maybe even a Bravely Default character.

          • Michael Cortorreal

You sure Snake never appeared on a Nintendo console before the PS era?
Cause if I remember correctly…Metal Gear first game was on Fanicom (Nintendo) console system on the 80’s; so the slant “first has to have appeared on a Nintendo console” applies to him really well, as for Pacman, since this is a Nintendo/Namco collaboration, and Namco owns PM, it would be weird that he didn’t make the cut; also Pacman did appear on a Nintendo console, if memory serve’s me right; he had a Gamecube game made.

          • Michael Cortorreal

Well konami original had a system of their own with metal gear debuting on that system. The system didn’t really hit commercially and game was import to the famicom. But I could see were your getting at with appearing on a Nintendo console.

        • Macreen Smith

Neku Sakuraba from The World Ends With You could work.

Man Fuck Pac-man wheres Jack Frost?

  • Strain42

Didn’t care that much until I saw he has access to Mappy as one of his attacks. Mappy is awesome.

  • Anon-non

Love that they used this design as opposed to the new one. The new one is disgusting.

  • Prinnydoom

Ok while i don’t mind pac-man he’s not what I would have included. Ugghh Still waiting on a new fire emblem rep, praying and hoping.

  • Ardus

Didnt they just kinda of off-handedly confirm Mr game&watch as a returning character at the end?

    • He has been recurring since Melee. That, and he was the also the first recurring walking reference to 8-bit limited animation.

  • Chaos_Knight

I couldn’t help but think of this.

    • OveReAction

EXACTLY as I thought since Megaman’s debut!

    • J_Joestar

all we need now is the fanservice

  • SlickRoach

Sweet, I figured Pac Man would be in here but I had no idea they’d represent him so well with his moveset. Looks like I’ve found my main, a cross between Olimar & Mr. G&W who looks like is re-confirmed by the end of the trailer.

  • Hinataharem

The Pac is on a snack attack

  • Revorse

I wish that picture with the four of them clashing was big enough for a wallpaper. That’s just amazing.

  • Kornelious

Well……everything is just as expected here, Still cool that Nintendo is listening to there fans………Mant even enough to give us Shulk, Robin and/or Lucina :D………Please?……

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

They made him adorable!………. omg I wasn’t on the pac-man train before but now I am :D His FS is perfect

  • fairysun

Man, this is the Smash with the most variety cast of character… and I love it.
Now if only Square Enix(Terra from FF VI) and Konami(Bomberman or Contra) want to lend their characters here.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      Neku TWEWY fits

  • Brimfyre

Pac-Man vs. Donkey Kong vs. Mario Brothers

A Battle over 30 years in the making. Can’t. Wait.

  • Spirit Macardi

Hmm… The most I can say is that at least they went with the older, still charming Pac-Man rather than the current one with the creepy teeth and semi-realistic eyes.

Now that I’ve actually had a chance to rest and put my thoughts together, let me see if I can phrase my point of view in a more eloquent manner:

Ordinarily a character inclusion like this wouldn’t bug me. I was okay with Snake in Brawl even though I dislike Metal Gear and there were a number of Konami reps I would have rather seen. And if Namco treated Pac-Man the same way they treated their other franchises, I dare say I’d have been cool with this too. But the problem is they don’t.

I can’t rightly blame Nintendo or Sakurai for this: They’re just adding an iconic character, and I get that. But if I were to purchase the game, I fear that in a small way I’d be supporting that misguided attitude of Namco’s that keeps Pac-Man around despite poor sales while other series are canned for the same reason.

If you’re going to buy the game, then more power to you. I just can’t bring myself to.

    • Leonard Norwood Jr.

It is sad to see you won’t buy this game, although what bugs me is that your reasoning does make it seem that you are a bit gone into thinking just because Sakurai just put Pac-Man in the game is your main reason why, and even then, you probably still won’t buy the game of your own reasons, even if it is poor in my eyes or others. I do remember all the game I’ve played including Pac-Man. Of course as I grew up, I do know the meaning of the word nostalgia, but I wonder if should I let it affect my thinking with absolutely everything in a franchise, and I figured I always shouldn’t, but I should try to give a game a shot to see what were trying to do, what worked and what didn’t work. And I try my best to research and come to a fair conclusion after taking time to look into things, the developers, their franchises and licenses and so forth.

Anyway, that Pac-Man Tv show definitely wasn’t Japan’s idea, but somewhere in either Europe or America where the animators developed the show, I can’t hold it against Namco of Japan or even America or Europe, usually ideas come to their attention, and they do give the license for people to do something with their mascot, a TV show, game or etc. I just think some people including yourself don’t take the time to think, you probably just watchedomething then immediate judge before you put the pieces together. By then, anything that even brings up Pac-Man’s name, seems to be troubling.

I don’t mean to be insulting, it is just that i’ve seen too many immature people with immature thinking lately, and I get concern if they really are in the right or just playing. Anyway, it would be okay if you keep it in mind if you at least bought the game to support that Sakurai is doing a good job if you like what he created. Just don’t be so focused on other things in the gaming world that trouble you so much, that it is enough for you to not buy the game.

      • Spirit Macardi

        You completely missed my point.

My problem isn’t that Sakurai put him in, my problem is with Namco themselves.

Namco will shelve beloved series if they ever fail to perform to their standards at retail, yet they grant Pac-Man complete immunity to this, even though his recent 3D games have bombed hard. It’s like they view the series as one that can do no wrong, and that if it doesn’t succeed it’s the fault of the market for not realizing its genius and they’ll just keep making more until people realize.

Again, if this double-standard wasn’t the case or if Pac-Man was still a profitable series I wouldn’t have an issue. I’d still have characters I’d rather see, but I’d accept it and still buy the game. But as it stands, I have the fear that if I were to buy it, Namco would take that as justification for their continued self-destructive attitude and start milking the series even harder. Though granted that’s probably going to happen anyway; I just don’t want to feel that I was in some way responsible for it.

        • Leonard Norwood Jr.

Sorry to have missed the point, but unfortunately, you’re not buying the game because of the reasons that I think is just plain BS and you’re trying too hard overthinking it. Ad besides I know Pac-Man may not be the only one, Megaman with his cancellations, Sonic struggling to keep to the expectations. And other games that seem to have some trouble.

Video game developers, especially those who have been around for 30 years, definitely should know they have to get their acts together with all their franchises. After all that, some franchises Namco has seems to get canned because some developers who had a shot with them didn’t do much that could have done to excel them to what they could really do with them. This applys for all companies. And I know that sucks whens something doesn’t go well.
But it doesn’t stop me from buying this Smash Bros game. I’m buying the game to show support to Sakurai at least, and I just want to kick butt and have fun. I don’t want to rob myself of any game that I play that could be really good. If I get afraid to be play a title because what is going on with a video game developer, then I’ll never know if they got it right or not.
I’ve been keeping an eye out for all companies, but I also have to give them a shot when I can, Your thought of Namco with their franchises, well you are concerned what they are doing, and that’s why they have to change, but until then, you gotta ask yourself, are you letting yourself not buy a game that Sakurai created because Namco and probably other companies, in your mind and opinion, haven’t got it together and you refused to support them because of their questionable business actions they’ve done so far, that you think that you are encouraging them by buying the game? Or are you trying so hard with that thinking of yours that you are missing out on a game that you know you’ll probably enjoy.

I still think you are overthinking it, Of course Namco hasn’t been on the ball lately, I wish they just get some guys that know what it is all about, and change their decisions to make sure they’ll feel on top again. However, I’m not going to NOT buy the game because of the things I know is BS that’s going on in Namco, whoever is making the decision with the franchises needs to be replaced with new management.

          • Spirit Macardi

Well, I’m sorry you think it’s BS, but it’s something I’m doing on personal principle. I can’t rightly claim to be against Namco’s decisions and then do something that could justify them. That’d make me just as much of a hypocrite as them.

  • Michael Cortorreal

At first i was worried on how they would fit Pac-Man into the mix, but now that i have seen some move’s, i can say that…he’s a solid character (so far) with a good moveset.
Now…if they added Goemon (instead of Snake) i would be happy…not that i hate the guy but, i feel he would fit into the mix.

  • Snorlaxation

I wasn’t sure about his inclusion, or at least how i felt about it, (I know a lot of people have been hating on it, obviously) but i gotta say, this trailer makes me smile. I’ll definitely be using Pac-Man….
Wonder if one of his alternate colors is Ms. Pac-Man…

    • Göran Isacson

Heh, Ms Pac-Man would be pretty cool. And an easy re-skin as well.

  • Benjamin Tyler

I’m happy for the news. My only thing is I can never trust anything Nintendo says ever again considering when they revealed Bandai Namco as their developing partner for SSB4 they explicitly stated no BN characters would appear.

  • Göran Isacson

Everything is old school, and nothing hurts. All I want now is Simon Belmont for maximum nostalgia bombs, but that would demand Konami caring enough to request him and I do not think they care to do so.

  • Lucky_x

Megaman, Sonic, Mario, and Pacman altogether! Amazing. I’m kinda surprised there is so much complaining. His movement looks pretty cool, and Pacman is cool so what’s there to complain about really! Great addition.

  • leingod

I saw some stuff from Pac-Land there… and the Bosconian ALARM! That was pretty cool.

  • I’m super salty about this I would’ve loved some klonoa recognition

  • Anthony Birken
