Nintnedo revealed their figuring project, known as amiibo, during their E3 digital event. It works similarly to Skylanders and Disney Infinity figures, where each figure comes with a special chip, recognized by the Wii U GamePad.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime annonced that when you touch amiibo to the GamePad, the character data gets downloaded into the game you’re playing, which then sends information back to the figure, which allows for new gameplay possibilities, such as leveling up the figures.

The first set of toys will be getting a release alongside Super Smash Bros. later in the year. In Smash Bros. for Wii U the figures will have their own unique stats and fighting style, and will also evolve as a fighter, as it develops its own attributes and skills.

According to Reggie, the amiibo figures will be released for other Nintendo games, such as Mario Kart 8, in addition to more to come.

More details on amiibo will be revealed soon.

I know a lot of people really hate this practice with stuff like Skylanders and Disney Infinity because it just feels like greedy corporate moneygrubbing…and it totally is, but honestly, I’m pretty okay with it.

When I was a kid playing Pokemon, I desperately wanted Pokemon toys. The idea that kids today can get toys from their favorite video games and actually use them in the game itself is actually pretty awesome.

Plus c’mon…Nintendo characters. I wonder just who they’re gonna do for this.

maybe something for pokemon like exclusive event figure for events like e3 and tokyo gameshow

I can definitely see that, they would probably have a golden stand or something to differentiate from normal amiibos like special guest Miis have gold pants.

        • James Todd

          that could work too

I couldn’t give less of a crap about this, I’m only glad it’s not something like unlocking characters or content in general, just a sort of tamagotchi.

Okay Nintendo, Just take my bank details and mail me every one you make. It’ll make it easier for both of us.

Anyone who complains about this, just don’t buy them, at least with these you can actually play the game without them, unlike skylanders and disney infinity.

I’m so getting Samus’s figurine, first of all!

And now Nintendo jumps on the Skylanders hype train, CHOO-CHOO! XD

I actually would be more interested in this though if Nintendo has some good characters from Fire Emblem of Xenoblade…That would be awesome! :D

Ugh, I really do not like these things. I hope it is a separate thing in SSB, I don’t want to use figurines or have a friend bring over a lv 20 mario figurine or whatever and be super strong. $5 says there will be exclusive characters?

I thought that they would be smart toys, but I didn’t realize how smart. It sounds like they have an AI that learns how you play. That’s really amazing. I think that smart toys are really nifty.

I really hope that this will allow me to play as more characters I really like. I can’t wait to buy some!
