See How Nintendo Are Taking On The Competitive Shooter With Splatoon

By Ishaan . June 13, 2014 . 11:28am

Competitive shooters are the one genre that Nintendo don’t dabble in very much, but they’re doing it now with a game called Splatoon for the Wii U. Splatoon is a 4-on-4 team-based third-person shooter where the goal is to cover the arena with as much ink of your team’s colour as possible.

The ink isn’t just for show, though—it also affects gameplay. For example, you can spray walls with ink to access hard-to-reach areas. You can also “dive” into the ink to camouflage yourself or move faster, and covering more territory with ink unlocks weapons that can then be put to use to give the opposing team an even harder time.

Splatoon has been demonstrated several times by Nintendo throughout the course of this week during their E3 livestream, and you can watch one of these demonstrations above. The game is planned for release in the first half of 2015 and will include online multiplayer.

  • Gotta say this has my interest pretty piqued for a Wii U. I just hope this is priced right when it debuts.

  • urbanscholar

It’s literally uber glorified paint balling & that’s very fun

  • TrevHead

    my game of e3

  • NeptuniasBeard

I think at this point, the only genre Nintendo hasn’t done is like, a visual novel with ecchi elements.

You’re welcome Nintendo, get on that

    • KoRLumen

I would buy that in a heartbeat.

    • lackofstyle

A game that lets you court and eventually bed any of Nintendo’s many characters, like some crazy sexy super smash bros, male or female protags, straight, gay, harem routs included. i’d buy that

      • I would buy 20 copies.

        • Ric Vazquez

      • NeptuniasBeard

        I’d hit that

      • Ric Vazquez

I’d buy that for the chance to have a waifu harem XD

      • HershelLousyton

Only if I can have sex with Ridley.

        • lackofstyle

No, he is too big lol.

    • TheGioG

You mean… a pervy version of Hotel Dusk?
Kyle Hyde: “You can run, you can hide. But one way or another, I’m coming for that booty, Mila.”
      Mila: “…”

Get the former members of Cing on that right NOW Nintendo.

      • Nirvanes

…Please, don’t do that with one of my favourite games ever…

      • David García Abril

Well, in that image Hyle is in his early 30s, while Mila is barely legal… so… yeah…

        • Ferofax

          Works for me.

    • John Diamond

yeah let’s hope they don’t do that

    • AndyLC

duuude have you played Super Princess Peach? It’s about her using the ‘Vibe Sceptor’ to deliver ‘intense emotions’ to herself.

The ending of the game has the vibe scepter get lost and tells the player that the next time you hear your mom ‘laughing’ by herself, she might just be using the vibe scepter.

      • NeptuniasBeard

Super Princess Peach is easily the dirtiest game to ever be rated E

    • 古戸ヱリカ

Nintendo once ran a love hotel. They don’t need to make games out of it, they’ve lived it.

    • Love+ ? Okay, isn’t really echi but has a visual novel side.

  • J_Joestar

It would be awesome if they had some anime crossover DLC
    de geso

  • CptPokerface

Nintendo ‘ s creativity is as strong as its ever been. As someone who periodically enjoys shooters this looks like a really well deserved fresh take on the genre.

  • salazar547

im not really into shooters but this game looks really cool , finally some new ideas instead of “generic shooter 2000”

  • John Diamond

sorta wish it was 6 vs 6 tbh

    • FlameEmperor

Game is still in development so they could add more modes and bigger matches to it.

      • John Diamond

yeah on further thought, 4 vs 4 suits the map size… it’s just that 6 vs 6 is pretty much the standard in some shooters

        • FlameEmperor

Yea I know. The game looks super fun and I’ll be picking it up for sure. Can’t wait to see how they improve the final product!

  • Kaetsu

This is going to sound really weird but I can actually see this game having a competitive scene as long as Nintendo supports it. I know it seems weird for a game like this but I can actually see this at tournaments and having teams compete against each other.

EDIT: A representative at Nintendo said that Splatoon will have voice chat, further proving my case that this game could have a competitive scene.

    • TrevHead

I would love for there to be a competitive scene around Splatoon, the lack of K/D would be a breath of fresh air.

I hated the fact that despite having a 360 which is supposed to be THE place for shooters, yet I find most popular 360 shooters (and MP games in general) to be very boring. While anything quirky and unique that I liked on the platform was dead within a couple of week.

  • HershelLousyton For the record I have no beef with the Call of Duty series. I just found this picture hilarious.

  • Nirvanes

If I had a Wii U it would be one of the first things I would buy. This was one of the best new IP’s in all E3. Great, non-violent, competitive game.

    • mojack411

Well it’s not coming out until some time in 2015 so you got plenty of time to grab one. With Zelda Wii U and Xenoblade Chronicles X also coming out in 2015, I think that’ll be the best time to buy one.

      • Nirvanes

I’m really not eager to buy another console… I already have a PS3 and a 3DS. I’m more of a fan of ‘portable Nintendo’. I really like to have two absolutely different consoles so… my next step would be PS4… Maybe one day.

  • Ying

This looks like it is going to be so much fun!

  • James Enk

looks like a lot of fun but i need to see more before i am convinced it has enough meat to it

  • mojack411

I’ve made this same comment I dunno how many times now but I’ll say it again. Leave it to Nintendo to take a genre I had long grown tired of, twist it around, and reimagine it into something completely brand new, fresh, and exciting. This was easily the best new IP I had seen at E3 and one of the best games period. 2015 can’t come sooner.

On that note, you know it’s something else when squid girls beats out 95% of the other AAA titles shown at E3.

  • This game looks great! I soo want to play it!

  • Kaetsu

The game gives me a bit of a Jet Set Radio vibe in terms of the theme which is really cool.

  • TrevHead

Hopefully the devs refrain from using a sniper weapon in the game or atleast curb camping in someway.

    • RinaDawg

There is a sniper weapon, but the point of the game is to cover as much ground as possible, so you’d be wasting time and points for sitting around waiting for players to come to you instead of painting the ground.

      • drproton

It’s also a waste of time in many other games with objective-based game modes, but there’s always that guy.

        • TrevHead

          My thoughts too

Besides from that I think long range 1 hit kill weapons are such a shit weapon to put into an MP action based shooter. Been sniped isn’t fun just frustrating with no real 1 vs 1 dynamics of other weapons and is all about camping rather than been a team player.

I’d be very happy if most online shooters banned it.

  • Göran Isacson

Man this looks fun. Think I saw someone call it “the most interesting game people are probably never gonna pick up” though, but man do I ever hope they’re wrong and that there is an audience for this game, somewhere out there.

  • Izzeltrioum

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I’m going to spend hours playing this with my peeps..yummmm

  • DarkLight

We need more games that think out of the box like this for different genres. This looks like it’ll be lots of fun.

  • TheHolypopeofgaming

I’m not a Nintendo fan, I don’t buy Nintendo hardware I don’t support that. HOWEVER I hope this game sells well, because so many people complain Nintendo never tries anything new or does much outside Smash Brothers, Mario and Zelda. Here we finally have a new and promising Nintendo IP and in order to encourage them to try new ideas, this games NEEDS NEEDS to sell very well.

  • I wonder if they were inspired by de Blob in any way :)

  • T-X

I hope they developed a firefight mode and kick ass campaign. I can see this making a few huge additions and improvements already if sequels become an option or if they support the community long enough.
