Virtual-On Mech Fans Might Want To Keep An Eye On Jump Tanks

Jump Tanks is a still-in-alpha PC action-RPG shooter, but claims it’ll pair the twitchy shooter styles of Virtual-On with the customization of Dark Souls. You can catch an alpha trailer above.

The 5-on-5 shooter puts players in 20 feet tall futuristic (and clearly, very nimble) tanks. Interestingly, developers Mechanical Butterfly Studiosare looking at a way to allow players to actively dodge the spam of missiles and other projectiles, rather than simply having them be instant-hit weapons.

Players will be able to customize their tanks with various chassis, weapons, shields and more for their preferred playstyle. This ranges from spread-shot pellets to lasers to vulcan cannons. The parts will be available in a “collectible action game” format, which the devs liken to Magic: The Gathering and its sealed card packs.

While the game has no publisher yet, the devs have said they’re considering options—including our favorite, Kickstarter—and hope to potentially release the game as early as later this year.

This looks pretty fun. I will definitely keep my eye on the game.

Was playing old Virtual-On in an Arcade on Hayling Island, so the nostalgia is pretty high for me right now. I would jump on this immediately.

Hell yes. As a long time fan of the original Virtual On in arcades as well as Virtual On: Oratario Tangram for the Dreamcast I’d be all over this in a heartbeat if the gameplay is the same. Conceptually tanks that can jump are nowhere near as cool as actual mechs, but if the combat is anywhere near as fun as VO I’ll definitely check it out. I’d refer to Virtual On: Marz as well but that one wasn’t all that great lol.

this looks nothing like VO, other than jumping tanks, no dash attacks, no jump cancels, no melee attacks – but that aside, this looks fun, but nowhere near the depth of VOOT.

  • Zachary Ortiz

While it looks fun, without mechs it just doesn’t interest me as much. I’ll pass.

    DO WANT!

  • Oh my God, I didn’t realize how much I missed colors in my mech games, you guys! Even though we have Hawken and Project Nimbus and stuff, I’m TOTALLY onboard this one! COLOR! This is looking like so many cool games – somewhere between Jet Set Radio and Phantom Crash/S.L.A.I… I didn’t even know that’s a combination I wanted!

MikuruX below is right though; it absolutely needs Tachikomas/Logikomas/etc! The Taiko drums don’t exactly FIGHT the comparison, now do they? :)
