Other new games that made it into the top-ten were Wolfenstein: The New Order and Kirby: Triple Deluxe, and alongside Watch Dogs and Mario Kart, contributed to an 800% increase in dollar sales over May 2013.

Based on percentages said by a journalist, though wii u increased it seemed to not even get to a level to put it in line with the previous performance of the current next gen consoles.

Expected Wii U to sell multiple hundred k’s due to how strong MK8 is, but I guess the people who buy MK8 already owned wii u’s since day one. oh well. Wonder how the system will fare until smash bros, doubt hyrule will really move hardware nor the other minor games this summer, and then of course what next, since zelda seemed to be stated that it would be out after next e3.

Sony exclusive MLB is pretty strong.

    • Kaetsu

Zelda is huge plus the Dynasty Warriors fanbase will jump on board along with the Zelda fans. I think it’ll do well. Maybe not a system seller expect for in Japan but I think it’ll do very well.

      • subsamuel01

I don’t even think it will move units in Japan. Console sales in generally in Japan suck now. I think Smash Bros. Will move more units than Mario Kart. A lot of the people who opted to buy a PS4 or X1 will probably by a Wii U just for smash.

        • Aaron K Stone

I don’t think Smash will do better than MK.

          • Slayven19

Smash will do a lot better than mariokart in japan. It will pull better launch numbers than mariokart in the U.S as well. However, mariokart is a longer lasting seller so overall it will surpass smash.

    • Daniel

I think Hyrule warriors is gonna sell like gangbusters in japan and last i heard it was rated #1 on amazon japan as early as maybe a month ago. But yeah i had a wii u before MK 8 as im sure a bunch of others did too

      • darke

Yeah, I’m expecting Hyrule will move more new WiiU sales then MK8 did, since it seems most likely of the new series using nostalgia characters to bring in new blood; whereas MK8 seemed much more targeted already to Nintendo faithful.

  • Considering how skewed the NPD charts tend to be, due to grouping by game and not by system: dang, I’m surprised Kirby managed to hit the chart!

  • raitouniverse

It got the #2 spot on just 2 day sales? Nice!

    • darke

Probably would have gotten there on first day sales alone; preorder sales are huge for games that are ‘anticipated’ like this.

  • nonscpo

I’m surprised the vita moved as many units with a Borderlands game in need of patches. Safe to guess that the boost probably had more to do with people excited over the new redesigned vita, wanting that extra hour of batterylife and the better value of an 8 over a 4 GB memory stick (still feel that they should bundle them with 16GB or 32GB instead).

    • Zalin

What I have herd though about the new vita is the screen is not as bright or as clear looking then the older model. If that’s true I have to say the new model is pretty crappy compare to the old.

      • subsamuel01

I have both and yea, the screen for the slim is worse than the original because they went with a cheaper LCD rather than the traditional OLED. The battery life on the slim is a lot better though.

        • nonscpo

Yeah but if its your first vita you won’t notice the difference. Also my understanding is that the difference is moderate, suposedly the biggest difference is with darker colors, right?

          • subsamuel01

Yea, if the slim is the first one you get it still looks really good. The trade off was worth it, the slim is a lot cheaper and the difference is barely visible.

        • Zalin

I would honestly prefer the original then honestly I never had a problem with running out of battery with this thing and I love the screen on it.

          • darke

I do like the newer display, despite the fact I noticed it actually looks ‘lower quality’ and ‘blockier?’, but the black splotches of the original OLED annoyed me.

          • Zalin

Nice to know my vita is not the only one with black splotches. But hey can’t see them when its on.

          • darke

Kind of. The reason I came to hate them was the loading screens of Ys Celceta I think, or any games where the screen goes totally black except a little note in the corner saying ‘loading’.

You spend quite a lot of time regularly staring at screens with obvious splotches with nothing else to do, so it gets a little annoying. :P On regular game play screens, even the darker ones, it’s fine though.

    • Daniel Rossevelt

I bought a borderlands bundle, but i really just bought it for Akiba’s Trip 2, and Digimon Story: Cyber Slueth, and someother JRPG’s, oh and 8GB was way to small, its almost all ready full :(

      • darke

I grabbed the bundle since unfortunately in australia you couldn’t get the new one without a bundled game. Thankfully you didn’t have to get the crappy borderlands 2 port, but of all the other games on the list, the only one I didn’t have or didn’t think was terrible was that new “Pets” game. I haven’t tried it yet, but it’s been sitting in the cart slot since I got it. :P

  • KingGunblader

Why is The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on the chart twice?

I’m one of the people who bought Watch Dogs at launch. I ended up being severely disappointed by it. Would recommend waiting until it’s cheaper (like, 50% cheaper) for those haven’t jumped in yet.

    • subsamuel01

Really? I bought Watch Dogs at launch and loved every minute of it. Close to getting the Platinum trophy on PS4 too, the game had some flaws like the driving physics and lack of customization but other than that it was great. The game looked beautiful on PS4 too, for a new IP it was very well done, I expect better for the sequel though.

      • KingGunblader

To me, this game was a classic case of a wasted premise. I’ve already had this conversation too many times, so I’ll just leave it at that.

        • subsamuel01

It was the same situation with the original Assassins creed. It was over-hyped and people felt disappointed. Besides the obvious graphically changes the final product was just as advertised through the countless demos and gameplay videos they revealed during the past two years since E3 2012. Most people just have a problem with the game’s story which I could related too.

          • darke

I think the whole press-X-to-hack thing annoyed a lot of people too. Would it have killed them to have a little minigame with every different type of ‘hacking’? Tag people/things with different difficulty levels and after you’ve ‘hacked’ X amount of personal details of people, then make the ‘easiest’ of that hacking automatic, then repeat for the higher difficulty levels just to make sure the game doesn’t get any more repetitive then it already it, but also to make it so that it isn’t ‘free’ so people hack everything.

          • subsamuel01

I think people would have got annoyed if they added a mini-game. A lot of people hated the CTos hacking Mini game. On the hardest difficulty it was ridiculously hard.

    • chibidw

If you have it on PC, get the mod for it that’s been floating around recently. Apparently someone figured out that the difference between the E3 version of Watch Dogs and the release version was as simple as effects that were intentionally toggled off by Ubisioft on the PC version. A mod was released to enable them and the game looks just like the E3 demo version they made us think we were getting to begin with.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

I don’t really care about the graphics I just want a music mod.

      • KingGunblader

My issues with the game aren’t technical (though for the record, I played the PS3 version).

  • Zalin

Like always not much diversity here.

  • subsamuel01

I’m surprised Spider-Man is still charting. I bought it day one because I thought it would be good, it was mediocre at best.

  • Spirit Macardi

Considering MK8 is a Wii U exclusive and it beat out a bunch of multi-console releases, I’d say that bodes quite well. And it’s only second place to Watch Dogs, one of the most overhyped games.

    • Guest

And with only two days tracked! Pre-Luigi’s Death Stare :P

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

Mario Kart 8 with two days sales for May. Is insanity

  • James Enk

i want to see hardware numbers

  • Dago

    Nintendo is doomed #not

  • Kornelious

    Woohoo! Watchdogs! :D

I’m actually one of the few people who really enjoyed this game…My only big gripe is that you can’t melee outside of stealth take-downs….I know the graphics weren’t what they were like at E3 but I’ve never been one to down a game due to graphics, plus it doesn’t really change anything,

As for the Amazing Spider-Man 2…..It’s not the BEST Spider-man game i played but I think it’s pretty decent…..I think Sam Riegal’s voice acting helps me get through it :D

  • nekolife

Who are all these people still buying minecraft?
How is there anybody left who doesn’t already own it after being in the charts so long?

    • Daniel Rossevelt

Seriously though, are some people like buying a third time or something?

    • Grape Monet

Kids. Kids are buying it in droves.

    • darke

There’s been 15 million sales of the PC version, and apparently in the last 24 hours over 15k people bought the game. So given over the entire lifetime of the PS3/360 I persistently heard that “the PC is dead”, you’d have to figure on consoles that it’d sell at least that many as well. :P

  • Ann Weschenfeller

It’s really nice seeing Nintendo making some good cash out of Mario kart 8. Totally deserved.

  • Eder García

GAF says Vita did 56k this past may… rejoice Vita adepts!

    • nonscpo

Is that worldwide or a specific region?

      • Enzo

I assume it’s just United States. Keep in mind that number isn’t a weekly number, but a monthly one.

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

Glad to see Wolfenstein in there. Developers, we don’t need tacked on multiplayer modes.

    • passthegrenadeplease

I definitely agree with you on not every shooter needs to be shoehorned with multiplayer and seeing the new wolfenstein without it, it was pretty refreshing seeing that the main focus was just the single player experience and not try to add multiplayer just for the sake of having multiplayer. And I thought Machinegames did an admirable job with the story campaign: I thoroughly enjoyed the shooting mechanics and the story to boot. Would love to see a sequel in the long run being that it sold pretty well and Machinegames was considering making a sequel if it sold to their expectations, which, obviously, the proof is in the pudding with how well it sold now.

  • keithmaxx

The fact that Mario Kart 8 was out only on a poorly selling platform and still made it to Number 2 is proof of its brand and selling power.

    • mymartyrcomplex

It also came out the 2nd to last day in May…

  • Damn… MK8 came out on May 30th too and it got to #2 for May!

  • Watchdogs and Wolfenstein: The New Order were both pretty good
