Here’s A Look At Mega Metagross In Pokémon Omega Ruby And Alpha Sapphire

By Ishaan . July 14, 2014 . 7:20am

The Pokémon Company has released a new trailer for Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, showing off the recently revealed Mega Metagross in in-game footage.

Mega Metagross is a Steel/Psychic-type. Upon Mega Evolving, his Ability changes to Tough Claws, which increases the power of attacks that make physical contact. He also has an increased Speed stat, with additional increases in Attack, Defense, Sp. Atk, and Sp. Def.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will be available this November.

Fuck Pikachu I want to Dress up Liligant and Mewtwo. I don’t remember the Elite four at all. Kind of wish they would have not shown the E4. Now I won’t be surprised.

    • Luxalpha9812

a dressed up mewtwo XD i would love to see that

    • How could you not remember Phoebe!? Just look at that character design! *drools*…Oh! *wipes his mouth* Sorry about that. ^_^;

      • DragKudo

I seriously remember and The elite four was the best in the game for me.

  • Sounds like Pokémon still have the most annoying click in the world. -_-

  • andref

Meta metagross somehow creeps me out, I don’t know why but it just looks…. wrong

    • Luke

I think it’s the chin spike

      • andref

Possibly though the way it floats just makes me think of metagross wanting to hug its opponent and that image is mega gross

  • Taylor Greene

Woo this trailer has me hyped! Glad they showed the elite four. I must have played through them three of four-hundred times in my Sapphire version. Can’t wait! Dat music.

  • ShinNeoGranzon

I’m surprised they haven’t made a Mega Pikachu yet, considering that Pikachu is the series’ mascot and so the show can be all Pikachu evolves but doesn’t really evolve. Anyways, the gym designs are looking pretty good. I’m hoping that Flannery’s gym will be easier to navigate in this game. Took me like 2 hours in the original games.

    • Leon Saw

All mega evolutions so far are for fully evolved Pokémon.

    • PreyMantis

Mega Evolution it’s only for those that reached their final evolution. Pikachu has a final evolution, so it won’t work.

      • ShinNeoGranzon

I know its fully evolved only, but I suspect that one day they’ll say screw it it’s Pikachu and give it a Mega Evolution anyways.

    • 하세요

It’s actually a running gag in the XY anime from Team Rocket that Pikachu could maybe Mega Evolve.

  • Tsuibana

The new artwork for the characters looks so good…

  • Luke

So something subtle from the video, shifty uses leaf blade, which he cannot currently learn!

    • John Smith

Maybe there’s a move tutor who can teach the move Leaf Blade in ORAS

  • Herok♞

They increased all of metagross’s stats without reducing any? it was powerfull before but now this is kinda broken.

    • LastFootnote

Stat decreases actually tend to make Mega evolutions more powerful because those points get reallocated into more advantageous stats. I think Tough Claws is a bit overboard, though. I’m just glad Metagross has two more weaknesses this gen (Ghost and Dark).

      • Raltrios

I dunno, if they just slap 20 points into each stat I don’t think it will affect too much. It’ll be vulnerable to Intimidate now, too.

        • LastFootnote

Yes, I just realized that Tough Claws adds 1/3 more damage to contact attacks, not 1/2. That’s reasonable.

It’s significant that it still has Clear Body when it comes out, though. Opponents have to switch in to intimidate it.

    • J_Joestar

not really, every Mega got a boost of roughly 100 points to their over all stats, any stat reduction is typically just stats relocated to another one.

  • NorthernPatches

I better be able to put my male Pikachu in a dress.

    • shytende

Did you notice that all those pikachus are actually female ?
      Look at their tails.

So, if my female Pikachu can be a rockstar, I don’t see why my male Pikachu can’t be an Idol.

  • DanijoEX ♬ the Cosmic Owl

Hm…so Mega Metagross getting increased stats…I’m kinda seeing this being easily exploited.

    • LastFootnote

ALL mega evolutions get increased stats. Exactly 100 points of stat increases, in fact. Makes up for the fact that they can’t hold an item.

      • DanijoEX ♬ the Cosmic Owl

Well, yeah. but I’m talking about Metagross in general. With his stats increase, it means using a different moveset if you’re using him.

Or a different strategy when against him. Especially considering Metagross’s high Attack and Defense.

        • 하세요

But in Gen VI, he was actually pretty bad because of the nerf on Steel types. His Def didn’t mean squat to Shadow Ball / Dark Pulse etc. This is yet another case of “looks good on paper, but we need to see it in action” kind of things.

          • triablos

I hate this nerf because steels are my favourite types. :( I haven’t played competitive pokemon since gen V though so I’m not even sure what has changed outside of the obvious new type.

          • DarkRoxas

Well, this changes everything a lot, since Dark and Ghost type moves are so popular in this generation, specially Knock Off, Sucker Punch, Shadow Sneak and Shadow Ball.

          • Raltrios

The fact that many of those moves are Physical allows a Metagross to make use of his somewhat high Def to tank a hit while using Agility, and get a pseudo-Shell Smash from Weakness Policy. The abundance of Earthquakes helps, too.

          • DarkRoxas

Yup, and there is also the fact that Knock Off’s effect isn’t activated if the opponent is holding a Mega Stone, and Shadow Ball isn’t really this common, since the most popular users of these moves are Aegislash and Gengar. Since MegaGross will receive a “great” boost on it’s speed, maybe it can outspeed Gengar and take advantage of Gengar’s Psychic weakness… I think the only real problems MegaGross will have to face are Sucker Punch and the “weak” Shadow Sneak.

          • Raltrios

It’ll certainly be interesting to see if the stat changes and Tough Claws is enough to warrant losing an item. If ‘gross gets Drain Punch in the new games, I’ll be a very happy man.

          • Joseph Fontana

No way its gonna outspeed gengar….unless he gains atleast 70 speed which i highly doubt. Also with mega charizard runnin around and everything running earthquake this guy isnt gonna last unless he becomes tyranitar 2.0 with retarded high base def and attack.

          • DarkRoxas

Well… Gengar has “only” 110 base speed and Metagross’ speed will be GREATLY increased on it’s Mega Evolution… Unless Choice Scarfed Gengar is really common now. Well, I really don’t know, I haven’t played competitively for a long time :c

Btw, Mega Charizard X is slooooow :c If “it’s speed GREATLY increases” means what I think it will (about 40 more points on it’s speed), then those Equakes won’t be a problem for MegaGross, unless they come from a Choice Scarfed Garchomp. Now, this one really is a menace haha.

      • Kevin

not true alakazam only gets 90

        • DarkRoxas

That’s because Alakazam itself got 10 more points on it’s Special Defense, so tecnically he still gets a 100 base stats boost.

          • Kevin

what stat gain it receives before mega evolving is irrelevant as there are about 30 other pokemon this gen that got either +10 or +20 to base stats and by that logic it would mean they too would only receive a 90 or 80 increase when or if they were to receive megas. I’ll admit this is possible but if not that would mean that alakazam only received a 90 increase in stats by mega evolving. Also I said the stat increase to his non mega self is irrelevant because one has the choice to not mega evolve, he received those +10 in order to make the ordinary version more viable.

    • triablos

A mega getting increased stats? Blasphemy!

Just kidding, since he’s only getting boosts (no stat reductions) then I’m guessing he’s basically gonna be just a faster, stronger and bulkier version of the tank he is.

  • phayroent

The 3D versions of the Gym leaders look like kids. Why did they have to make all of the characters looks so much like children?

    • Cazar

Are you serious? The original overworld sprites were even more super-deformed than these 3D models.

      • SlickRoach

Agreed. Much better than the character’s heads being 60-70% of their bodies. Embrace the 3D change and leave sprites in the digital dust!

    • Snorlaxation

What really gets me is how young they look now in their character art…

  • 하세요

So hyped for this. Loving the 3D designs.

  • Strain42

Roxanne, Flannery, and especially Phoebe all look MUCH younger in their new artwork than they did before…hmm…oh right, Megagross. Yay, that. Lets focus on that.

  • Nagi

Change gothitelle clothes or riot XD i wonder if i can change other pokemon too :< idol liligant or stripper lopunny

  • Kroz

mega metagross design is way too busy…

  • Slickyslacker

    Oh dear, Roxanne. Those twintails.

Brawly’s new punkish look is stylin’, and I see Watson is even more…convivial, this time around. Much like Scott in the anime.

Why is Phoebe so cute? Even if I’m apparently alone about this, I’d like to see Glacia, too…

    • 하세요

I want to see everybody. I want to see this whole game. I even want the game icon on the 3DS to be a 3D trumpet.

      • Slickyslacker

The game’s 3DS icon should just be a gilded, trumpet-shaped waterslide.

  • J_Joestar

    Is it limited to Pikachu?
JoPangoro would so win any “Badass” contest
or at least make sure all the Pseudo-Pikachus can dress up at least.

    • God

Pangoro is already a badass Banchou without cosplaying, a 3D can’t handle the awesomeness of such a visage.

  • Alexander Marquis Starkey

  • Yan Zhao

Every Gym leader should have a Mega Evolution-able pokemon and use it against you. To make it funner/harder.

  • John Smith

Mega Metagross is a giant floating mechanical spider that can literally rape you with it’s metal….spike now.

  • Lynx

I really never thought about Metagross being a physical attacker so Tough Claws really makes no sense. Then again, I always had one, that for some reason, was Special Attack based.

    Should’ve gotten Levitate instead.

    • No sense? Metagross’ base physical att is 135 while its sp.att is 95. It was always more of a physical poke. And with Mega increasing its stats, that switch in ability would make its physical attack even more monstrous.

      • Lynx

        Read my post.

-Then again, I always had one, that for some reason, was Special Attack based.

        • You don’t get it. Your Metagross may have more IVs on SpAtt than Att but that doesn’t change the fact that your Metagross has a higher base Att. As base stats do not vary among a Pokemon’s own kind. Meaning regardless of what stats you see on your guy, the only reason you’ve seen it better as Sp.Att is due to its poor luck with IVs when it’s better suited to be a physical attacker in general.

Actually you also may have inadvertently EV trained it to be SpAtt on top of those IVs.

  • Joseph Fontana

Say hello to tyranittar 2.0. already has 130 atk/def and a pretty good sp.def with tough claws you can go straight wall and hit like a monster. Prolly gonna be the same as his old moveset. hammer arm/drain punch if he gets it, agility, zen headbutt, and meteor mash/or fuck even bullet punch with this beastly base attack.. Or even thunder punch for talon and charizard and ice punch is available for even more coverage along with earthquake
