Fan Designed Insect Glaive Makes It Into Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

By Ishaan . July 27, 2014 . 11:00am

Some time back, Capcom held a weapon design contest for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate in North America and Europe. Fans in both territories were asked to design a weapon for the game, and one winning entry from North America and Europe each would be recreated by the development team and included in the game.

Earlier this month, Capcom announced the winning entry from Europe—a hilarious Hunting Horn dubbed “The Emperor’s Speech”. Shaped like a pig seated atop a throne, the weapon makes pig noises when you use it.

This past weekend, they got around to announcing the winning entry from North America as well. The bold individual that won the American contest decided to venture into uncharted waters and come up with a weapon design for 4 Ultimate’s new Insect Glaive weapon. It’s called the “Clockwork Contraption” and you can see it in action above. Additionally, the submitted concept design can be viewed below.

That design’s good enough to fit in bioshock or any other videogame, but it could’ve used an extra layer of Capcom polish to really fit in with the rest of Monster Hunter.

The IDEA is OK, there’s been plenty of tech weapons in Monster Hunter like the gunhammer and the whole gunlance line, but the execution isn’t at the level expected of Capcom.

    • Ruins72

But it was meant to stand out, it’s distinct and quite unlike anything else we have in MH, and I’m sure that’s why capcom chose it.

      • AndyLC

It’s a good IDEA. It’s a neat tech weapon, like a gunhammer is, but it’s also got neat glowy green Necron-esque stones.

It’s execution is rough though, that’s what I mean. If you look at the Monster Hunter artbooks it’s filled with rough sketches of good ideas that eventually get polished to a suitable Capcom level, taking away unnecessary details and emphasizing good distinctions.

This gear insect staff is at the rough idea level, it’d look better if it could have been polished to a Capcom level design.

        • Ruins72

You realize the final model WAS polished and refined by capcom right? Look at the model compared to the original sketch, the bug more than anything.

Not everything “fits in” with the world of Monster Hunter to begin with. They’ve always had weapons and armor that don’t appear to belong in the world. Not everything is bone and scale – there’s definitely fantasy and modern elements sprinkled in.

      • AndyLC

The IDEA is fine, the execution is lacking. If it looked as good as a gunhammer I’d be enthused to use it. But it’s not a polished design, it’s only a raw idea.

That’s what I mean. The green stone and metal gears are a neat idea, but I want to see that idea executed at a level deserving of a Capcom game.

    • Zazon Zenzy

Actually, personally, the design fits well in Monster Hunter’s world. There are steampunk elements in the world itself, you know? Switch axes and all. It makes Monster Hunter’s world distinct.

I like the design, but being a lover of actual insects, I don’t think I could bear to use it.

    • Dascylus

So… as a lover of insects, you don’t like the concept of using an insect as your combat assist? Sounds contradictory to me.

      • biskmater

Oh, no, what I meant is I could not bear to use a mechanical insect, over a real one. I’m more than ready for the insect glaive.

        • Dascylus

I’ll just pretend it’s the beetle from Skyward Sword… in fact, why isn’t there a Zelda-themed insect glaive :/

  • Namuro

That is a very good design!

Hopefully, this can also inspire CAPCOM to come up with even more crazy designs of their own.

Would be good to have some more special-type insects that aren’t insects, like the cloud that comes with Nami’s staff.

I don’t know, I think they gave it a pretty good “polish” already. Also, if the contestant’s design was altered too much, I think they’d feel pretty sad…

Speaking of which, what’s your favourite hammer?

        • AndyLC

One of the first hammers I ever used was the jail hammer on the PS2. I saw its preview image and thought “whoah, it’s a cage! What a strange design… and it paralyzes things!” I mostly stuck with greatswords though for tail snipping.

After getting the MH artbook, their concept art shows notes on how you’d catch different bugs to stick in the cage and depending on what bug you had it’d electrocute, poison, and so on.

It’s not the strongest, but the jail hammer line stood out to me for being one of the first hammers I spent effort acquiring because it was so weird/cool.

          • Namuro

That’s a pretty cool concept! They must have went through a lot of designs, even for the really simple looking ones.

Man, you’re gonna love the hammers in MH4!

I especially like the Seltas Hammer, and Zamtrios Hammer.

  • 하세요

Now this one is actually pretty cool.

  • Godman

Can we get it in orange?

    • Spider-Man

      I like you.

  • KuroNathan

I like the gear sound effect when it’s swung

DAMN IT! I NEED THIS NOW!

  • Mr doom

Much better than the silly euro one.

  • Ban The Jackass

How come they didn’t ask for the fans to design the armor as well? Imagine the clockwork armor design! Dayum, will do many runs to complete the armor-weapon set.

    • 5parrowhawk

Is the Artian armour, or a variation, going to show up in MH4U? Because that pretty much fits the bill. Here’s hoping for a *full* Artian set rather than just a couple of parts…
