At Sony’s PlayStation conference at Gamescom, Konami showed off a new gameplay video of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, featuring the return of the cardboard box and the different ways in which you can use it. You can watch the video below.

  • Kroz

This box tech is next gen!

  • Shippoyasha

People getting all up in arms over how Kojima is making a darker game and then he suddenly makes the game funnier than ever. Swerve Master at work.

    • I don’t understand why they’d complain. Need a little bit of comic relief every now and again, eh?

    • Ni ~Algidus~

it seems like they missed the interviews where KOjima stated that the main missions will be dark with a little of humor while the side mission will keep the gold old goofy moments

  • Ric Vazquez

Can’t wait for this, game of the year material.

  • Hector Velar

the image boxes to seduce enemies and the horse pooping now we know we have reached a monumental achievement in gaming history, take it away Kojima.

  • Yatol Charles

    SJW are crying

    • British_Otaku

Is there a reason why Social Justice Warriors have a reason to care about or be angry about this?

What am I missing on the interwebs? Some controversy about models being on the boxes I presume… >_>

      • Shippoyasha

There are some people, yes. But I think a lot of Kojima fans realizing this is a fun schlocky element to his games is kind of putting a stopper to that from becoming pandemic in forums.

        • British_Otaku

It would be odd if people caused a pandemic over this when all of the previous Metal Gear games I remember (I only own MGS4, but am aware of elements of prior games) experimented with this sort of humour and mechanics.

Then, God of War Ascension’s trophy name happened… >_> The line was truly crossed.

  • Armageddon

The cardboard box no metal gear would be complete without it. XD

  • Kalis Konig

Kind of silly but I guess he needed to add some light-hearted elements in there somehow.

    • Black Heaven

Metal Gear Solid series has always been known for its incredibly goofy quirks like these. They never wonder why a cardboard box seems to be out of place in the middle of hangars, corridors, toilets; Enemy Soldiers always fall for dat sexy Magazine suspiciously placed on the floor (it’s the box now though); Codecs usually have the craziest easter eggs, and more.

Despite that, it’s still quite heavy on the story.

MGS is never taken *too* seriously, it is what sets it apart from its similar games like splinter cell. :)

      • Jadfish

man I hope they somehow implement those crazy codecs calls in Phantom Pain. Ground Zeroes had a few ones, but they were more like funny little comments on something, not talks about energy recharging mushrooms like in MGS3

  • Tarkovsky

The Social Justice Warriors are going to have a field day with this. XD

  • Jadfish

The box seems overpowered this time around :D

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Why on earth does the US army not use boxes? no one would expest a box of being a better then a Tank or Nuke Konami: CBOD Cardboard Boxs of Duty
