Super Smash Bros. Has An Endurance Battle Mode Where You Fight Every Character

By Ishaan . September 2, 2014 . 9:00am

The new Super Smash Bros. will have an “All-Star Mode” where you can challenge every fighter in the game, taking multiple ones on at a time. Director Masahiro Sakurai explained how the mode works over Miiverse.

“This time, you can challenge every fighter in All-Star Mode from the moment you turn on the game!! This is a survival battle with limited recovery items and no option to continue,” Sakurai wrote.

“However, this mode will be incomplete until you’ve unlocked every fighter… Until then, you can only play against characters that are already available. This is a picture of the bottom-screen menu, with a padlock indicating that the mode is still incomplete.”

“In these battles, multiple opponents appear in one stage, and you clear the battle by defeating a number of them,” Sakurai explained.

“The rest area that appears between battles displays the next opponents and the year the characters made their first appearances, and it also holds recovery items and an occasional reward.”

“The characters you fight against appear pretty much in chronological order. Behold, the history of Nintendo games!!”

So it’s a repeat of what they had Melee?

    • KingGunblader

And Brawl. I don’t know why Sakurai keeps writing posts about returning features as if they’re new.

      • Jorge

New for a portable I suppose….I guess the chronological feature is new

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kevassa02 kevassa

Brawl’s All-Star mode was chronologically arranged too, though.
But Brawl had continues for All-Star, if I remember correctly

          • Jorge

I obviously didn’t retain too much Brawl knowledge haha

      • Gael Summers

If there’s aesthetic and technical changes I see nothing wrong with posting about it

        • KingGunblader

I’m not complaining about the fact that he’s posting about them. He just keeps saying things like “this time” or “introducing” as if we’ve never seen them before, which I think is a bit weird.

      • James Robert Thompson

People complain about obviously returning features not being shown far too much to be fair, heck there were people who though Yoshi was cut prior to the Direct; he’s just showing things to set their minds at ease.

        • Mugiwara

Oh I know! Like Ness right? :D

      • Laith Rem

’cause being able to play All Star with an incomplete roster is new and worth knowing about?

      • HarakiriKami

Actually every post he made this week is related to the leak

    • Rasputing

And in Brawl. Except that you don’t need to unlock every character before hand and will simply fight all of those who aren’t.

      • Jorge

You don’t need to unlock every character in this one either

        • doubleO7

That’s what he meant. You don’t have to unlock them all this time, but you did have to in Brawl and Melee.

          • Jorge

            Whoops I misread

    • MagcargoMan

      Melee had no chronological order.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

lol Shulk,Captain Olimar and Bowser Jr are the only fighter that will be under the 2000s

    • Princess_Eevee9

I don’t see Bowser Jr. In the shot. And you forgot about Rosalina+Luma, Lucina, and Robin.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        leeks

        • Princess_Eevee9

Mean nothing to me until official.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

how could I forget about Rosalina+Luma!?

        • Princess_Eevee9

          And Wii Fit Trainer. Xp

      • MagcargoMan

Bowser Jr hasn’t been officially revealed but has been seen in leaked footage.

        • Princess_Eevee9

Until I see him officially revealed I say he isn’t in the game leaked footage or no.

          • MagcargoMan

Are you denying the leak’s legitimacy?

          • Princess_Eevee9

            I am.

          • MagcargoMan

HOW!? How can people still be in denial about the leak?

There’s footage of Shulk. The official trailer shows Shulk using the moves he has in the leaked footage, like Air Slash and his down smash where he spins three times with the blade extended. His official render matches the one in the leak too.

Depends on what other fighters we expect.

      If there’s a Rythmh Heaven rep…
Or well a Golden Sun rep, or a Hotel Dusk rep :P

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

opps I forgot about Ike,Lucina,Robin and the Miis ><

        • Codename: D.A.V.I.D.

          Oh, right, those too xD
          Edit: Wii Fit Trainer too!

          Rosalina and dark pit too.

Oh, boy! Ice Climbers are 1985… they still have a chance…? ·_·

    • James Robert Thompson

The lock means that they haven’t unlocked all the characters in this screenshot, so anyone could still have a chance by theory.

    • http://negima.wikia.com/wiki/Asuna_Kagurazaka Asuna Kagurazaka

Because of a certain leak, they’re apparently DLC with Snake, Chorus Men, Lucas and 2 others I think. The leak is supposedly meant to be real, but I don’t know too much on it, so just take it with a grain of salt.

      • Rasputing

The DLC portion of the leak was investigated by several smash board members and proved false (http://smashboards.com/threads/dlc-leak-disproven.365401/). However, the pictures and video seem real considering Shulk’s render matches.

        • http://negima.wikia.com/wiki/Asuna_Kagurazaka Asuna Kagurazaka

Whoelse was seen on the leak? Dr. Mario, Dark Pit and… Ness? As well as that Duck Hunt Dog.

          • doubleO7

Bowser Jr, Wario, Jigglypuff and Game & Watch were also part of the leak, but haven’t been announced yet.

          • http://negima.wikia.com/wiki/Asuna_Kagurazaka Asuna Kagurazaka

Ahh, Ganondorf was also supposedly caught during one of the Trailers too.

          • doubleO7

Oh yeah, G-dorf was part of the leak too. Forgot about him, as well as Falco and ROB, lol. Ganondorf has since had an accidental appearance in a recent Japanese trailer.

          • Laith Rem

Game & Watch was announced with Pac-Man though.

          • doubleO7

He was teased, yes, but not announced. He’s not on the website, and Nintendo has stated that his appearance in the trailer was not a confirmation of him being playable.

  • AuraGuyChris

No continues and you have to do this over forty times…

Yeah, Sakurai, I don’t think your KI:U boss rush rule should stick to this game as well…

  • http://negima.wikia.com/wiki/Asuna_Kagurazaka Asuna Kagurazaka

Fighting in chronological order is very awesome! Witnessing the History of most of the greatest game characters known to man and getting to fight ‘em. Just awesome!

Gonna be maining my goddess Palutena, and also Shulk!

  • Chaos_Knight

The way DK and Luigi are positioned…

    Cannot unsee.

    • J_Joestar

and Luigi is pointing at Little Mac’s rear

    • SlickRoach

      [Dong intensifies]

    • http://negima.wikia.com/wiki/Asuna_Kagurazaka Asuna Kagurazaka

Now you made the viewers, who didn’t see it like you did, see it as you did. Now I cannot unsee it either.

    • blah

      my otp is canon

  • Black-Moustache

I know this isn’t one, but i really hate these separate modes and things on the different systems. 90-100% I’ll never get the 3DS version so I’ll never play these other modes as Smash Bros. to me is a couch multi-player game rather than an online one.

    • SlickRoach

Why would you not want a 3DS while having a Wii U though? Unless you’re holding out for the New 3DS which is understandable.

      • Black-Moustache

I have a 3DS, seen the New 3DS and will probably get the New 3DS, but Smash on portable ruins it to me. It’s like when they put the downgraded Lego games on Vita and 3DS. It’s just like “Why would you waste your time?” I know the 3DS isn’t downgraded, but seems less fun.

        • SlickRoach

I feel ya on that. Smash always has and will be a couch multiplayer game to play with friends. I just need my fix of it ASAP and maybe I might like it as a portable alternative when I can’t play the console version on the go.

          • Black-Moustache

            Maybe i guess.

        • Snorlaxation

Smash will always be a couch game, at its best when your kicking back and kicking ass (or getting your ass kicked), but honestly, I’ve always wanted/imagined being able to take it on the go. Even though the flat out beauty of the Wii U’s version makes the 3DS look a lot Less by comparison, I still want it. Just to experience it, see if my dream matches up with the reality.

          • Black-Moustache

They’ll have to have a very good deal to get me to buy for 3DS. Ah well~

        • HarakiriKami

Because people in japan play multiplayer games OUTSIDE their house.

Smash 3DS and Smash Wii U are different games anyhow

Handheld games get played far more than console games btw

          • Black-Moustache

They’re basically the same game apart from the games modes i mentioned. Didn’t really ask where Japanese people play their 3DS’ just stating why i think it’s dumb to have these separate modes on the different platforms so….

  • https://www.youtube.com/user/BaoZakeruga BaoZakeruga

Seems almost like you guys are implying this is new.

    • Snorlaxation

Right? The missions in Melee and Brawl were pretty much This already.

      • DEnM

Hell, this was already this already. All-Star Mode has been in the game since Melee.

    • 하세요

I think the purpose of it was to announce that we can do All-Star mode from the very start, it’ll just be missing characters you haven’t unlocked yet rather than remaining locked / hidden until you unlocked every character.

  • Mugiwara

People complaining about Sakurai posting obvious returning features(This is All Star but without continue), but then again people complain about “No Ness!!111 Won’t buy!11!”. >.>

  • Steven Hunt

Hey I think the chronological order thing is pretty neat!

  • http://negima.wikia.com/wiki/Asuna_Kagurazaka Asuna Kagurazaka

It looks like Bowser’s like “Respect Little Mac!” with the whole fist thing, and Little Mac’s like “Whoa there, you stay away!” I would mention the erotic looking pose between DK and Luigi, but… I’d rather not, it worries me.

  • NintendoPSXTheSecond

why the hell is “All-Star Mode” and “Endurance Battle Mode” in quotes or anything?! It’s obviously All-Star Mode that’s been in Smash since Melee! Get with it Siliconera, this isn’t new!

  • Sentinel

I like the chronological touch. Very nice.

And on another note, BRING BACK THE ICE CLIMBERS!!

  • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

This doesn’t make sense, though. The revealed Menu screen shows no All-Star Mode…well, either way, I like how it let’s you fight them in chronological order again.

    • Krisi92

It’s probably in the Smash or Games & More menu.

      • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

Could very well be, but it’s not just that. The Menu looks incomplete and cluttered, like there’s a hidden game mode or something. I always thought, if it was a game mode, that it was All-Star Mode.

        • Krisi92

Yes, but Sakurai directly said that this time, All-Star mode will be available from the moment you turn on the game.

          • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

*sigh* I know that. That’s what I mean by it doesn’t make sense. All-Star Mode is unlocked from the start, yet the revealed Menu screen doesn’t have it on top, but under another menu option. Add to that that the revealed Menu screen looks cluttered and incomplete like there’s a hidden mode or something. I initially thought before this Pic of the Day that this hidden menu option would be All-Star Mode, but that is no longer possible.

    • MagcargoMan

Melee made you fight them in a completely random order (except for Mr Game & Watch always being last). There was no chronological order.

      • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

        I haven’t touched All-Star Mode in ages. I got Melee’s All-Star mode confused with Brawl’s.

  • http://youtube.com/kuyamagix iKen

Even though it’s nothing new. It’s always nice to get people hype with new and improved stuff.

Seriously whatsup with that weird pose on the screenshot with DK & Luigi :S

    • MagcargoMan

They’re in the middle of their taunts.

  • Hyero

If it’s going in chronological order does that mean Pit and Game&Watch will be up in the first few fights?

  • Kornelious

Heh, It’s like you already knew how I was gonna do this Sakurai XD
