Super Smash Bros.’ Conquest Mode Will Run In Beta For A While

By Ishaan . September 16, 2014 . 9:31am

Last week, Nintendo revealed that Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS would receive an update patch upon being released in Japan. This patch adds a new mode called Conquest, and director Masahiro Sakurai shared information on it last night.

Conquest mode is an interesting feature. It seems as though it’s effectively a way for Nintendo to gather data on how characters hold up in matches over a period of time.

The way it works is, the game picks specific characters/teams  for a period of time, and if you pick any of those characters in a “With Anyone” match online, you will automatically participate in the Conquest, and your wins as that character will be recorded as part of the Conquest rankings.

“We’ll be running Conquest in beta for a while,” Sakurai said on Miiverse. “Also, Conquest data where players seem to be losing on purpose will be removed from the calculations. And lastly, there’s no point in working on this mode too much on your own, so don’t overdo it…”

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS is out now in Japan. North America and Europe will get the game on October 3rd.

I smell patches to balance out the game incoming

  • Jero

They’re thinking on balancing the wiiu version even more? Maybe the next game already or a later patch for the 3ds? What’s your game, Sakurai.

Pit: Lady Palutena! We must raise our score against the Fire Emblem guys!
Palutena: It’s not good, Pit! Their Yaoi supporters are pitching in to their cause as well, hence their big percentage!
Pit: Darn it to Hades and back! I wish I looked more bishonen or buff!
Luigi: It’s okay. I’ll be sulking in this corner with my bro…

That sounds like something they’d actually say, though I doubt Pit would use dammit… maybe darn would fit him better?

      • AuraGuyChris

        Oops. You’re right.

…I really wanted Hades to make an appearance in the game somehow.

I always had a strong hope that the old Palutena leak was on purpose so that when her trailer came around, Hades broke into the trailer midway and he was the playable character instead.

        • hawk222

That would have been cool! Some people are saying they couldn’t add Hades because he’s a walking spoiler, but they completely overlook the fact that Pit and Palutena’s conversation in her reveal trailer spoiled their battle about 2/3 through the game!

This is a good move. It will allow them to update the game with patches to balance it overtime.

Hopefully they DO balance the game. My boy Ness needs some buffs.

      • Rasputing

I suggest looking up a player named Awestin. I saw him playing Ness on a stream and he wrecked.

        • Salvador Sandoval

Thank you! I’m checking him out ASAP.

What does it mean for something like this to run in beta? What sort of things are they testing for that would be improved later on? It would be cool to see some sort of Conquest only, online specific, Smash Run-like events if Smash Run isn’t gonna be online, though that probably isn’t what this mode is for >_>. On that note, how much potential for additional modes/content is there for later on? Can we actually break some targets or better, board some platforms later? Please?

EDIT: I also miss some sort of Adventure Mode. It wasn’t super awesome in Melee, obviously became super awesome in Subspace Emissary, and it seems it just became Smash Run. But it was a nice alternative along with Classic and All-Star when I had no one over (though I guess that’ll never be a problem with a good online). Maybe in the Wii U version? Like without the cutscenes and a story if that’s not what Sakurai wants to do? I wouldn’t mind that.

Whoa this sounds like a neat feature.

  • Snorlaxation

    I…. like this.

  • ndjn3979

    People losing on purpose?

Just add ranked mode and problem solved.
(I do not know if SSB already has ranked)

  • DudeJericho

This sounds really interesting, I hope this works out as planned, could be essential in terms of long term/pro play.

  • Kornelious

I….Don’t quite get it….Basically it means that the feature will at first be used as a sorta test for character balancing issues and such right?

“Conquest mode is an interesting feature. It seems as though it’s effectively a way for Nintendo to gather data on how characters hold up in matches over a period of time.”
That’s a great way to analyze most- and less popular characters aka Tekken’s % character chart. I like it.

“Also, Conquest data where players seem to be losing on purpose will be removed from the calculations.”
There’s always a group of people who likes to fiddle with the ranks. It’s always been like that in every online fighting game. Boosters will try to get all available ranks, trophies, medals, etc. online. The above solution is a good way to fix the overall %, but it doesn’t fix the fact that these players in the wrong will always be there… Unless Nintendo temp/perm bans them through their Nintendo ID (LoL, Halo shenanigans anyone?) ;)
