Shiny Gengar Now Being Distributed For Pokémon X And Y Via GameStop

By Ishaan . October 13, 2014 . 10:29am

The Shiny Gengar distribution for Pokémon X and Pokémon Y is underway in North America. From today until October 26th, you’ll be able to pick up a Shiny Gengar via GameStop stores. The Gengar will come holding a Mega Stone that is capable of Mega Evolving him.

The Shiny Gengar will come with the move Sludge Wave, which Gengar cannot normally learn. Upon Mega-Evolving, he will gain the ability Shadow Tag, which prevents foes from fleeing or switching out in battle.

As mentioned in a past report, once the Shiny Gengar event concludes, from October 27th onward, GameStop stores will begin to distribute a Diancie, and transferring this Pokémon to the upcoming Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire games will allow you to Mega Evolve it. More details on Mega Diancie can be found here.

Awesome…but since I have a Shiny Ghastly that can easily evolve into Haunter to Gengar…would be a waste for me.

Gotten that one from Wonder Trade, rare thing to happen.

    • FivePointedTheStar

“The Shiny Gengar will come with the move Sludge Wave, which Gengar cannot normally learn.”

I think it’s worth your time.

      • ネオフォトン ~ Neo

Sludge Wave is bueno, but I dunno if I’d feel like soft resetting for viable IVs, let alone nature on it. :<

Aside from the fact Gengar has a solid movepool that Sludge Wave isn't much of a first choice.

        • Guillermo Oliva III

True, but it is still a unique Gengar due to sludge wave and you should get him(besides he gets STAB for it and not only, he be good for team battles) XD

          • Fenrir

I think his point went over your head there.

Regardless of unique move, it ultimately requires a lot of soft-resetting to A) get a viable nature and B) viable IVs, namely Special Attack and Speed.

Also in team battles, if this Gengar goes Mega, Earthquake is going to laugh in its face. Even if it doesn’t go Mega, singles will always be where Gengar shines brightest, not doubles.

          • Guillermo Oliva III

I know that and you can acknowledge the fact that he can still use his time to find the right viable nature and IV’s for whatever stats that he prefers over. Also, Gengar can be used for doubles if you know how to manage it, just like how you know how Gengar shines in single-battles.

          • ネオフォトン ~ Neo

*she/her :A Though I assume with a handle name like “Neophoton,” it’s easy for the assumption that I’m a guy.

Problem is, and I can see what Fenrir is getting at is: Given how wide-spread the Destiny Knot method made 31 IVs easily accessible, and the fact soft resetting for that 5 IV is going to take far too much time than what it’s worth in competitive-viability.

In short, for how much time it takes for one to soft reset for those IVs, it takes less time to get a viable Gengar with DK + Everstone. Gengar has a wide enough movepool that it doesn’t necessarily need Sludge Wave, so it’s hard for me to chalk it up as a loss.

          • Guillermo Oliva III

True, I still think you can do your best to at least use it for fun or just enjoy it with Sludge Wave :b

          • ネオフォトン ~ Neo

            In my PC, perhaps.

          • Guillermo Oliva III

Well, it is up to you and you have my respects if you care or not to do so.

          • Fenrir

I think that’s ultimately a point we were trying to make, it’s completely up to the person whether they want to get it or not because otherwise, it’s not necessary and the unique move sorta means nothing in the long run. Particularly when a fully well-bred Gengar will be perfectly fine damage-wise with Sludge Bomb.

          • Guillermo Oliva III

Ok, I am still going to state that he can try or not.

          • Fenrir

Just like how I’ll state that it is everyone’s choice in the first place and no amount of urging others will change that.

(Also protip; you may want to read that above post again because the correct word is she)

          • Guillermo Oliva III

Just like how I’ll state “it is up to him” I did not direct an order to the person and quit bringing this discussion further to a ridiculous matter about raising “Shiny Gengar” due to its unique move, since bringing an entire discussion about the topic of “finding the right EV IV’s and nature, soft-resetting” and then “ultimately pointing out about the person’s willing to decide on it” is just silly, Once again . . . . . . “it is up to him” and he or she will not matter to me ,since I have no clue if the person is male or female and stating that out is not necessary.

          • Fenrir

Perhaps you should be more careful with your phrasing then and word your sentences as “I suggest” so you don’t come off as urging someone to get something they might not want.

Also “*she/her :A Though I assume with a handle name like “Neophoton,” it’s easy for the assumption that I’m a guy.”

          • Guillermo Oliva III

That’s still not valid to assume about someones gender and “it is still up to him” as in “the person can really decide to either choose to do it or not to do it”, the way I phrase my sentence has nothing to do with this conversation and I already told you to stop this ridiculous manner of yours.

          • Fenrir

I find it amusing that you accuse me of being ridiculous when perhaps you take a step back and observe your own words. A perfectly clear sentence over gender should be enough to say “yes, this person is a guy or gal”.

And yes, your phrasing has a lot to do with this conversation since you were urging someone to get the event Gengar when she actually doesn’t want it. She didn’t feel it was worth the time to reset for nature and IVs despite the unique move but you urged her to get it based off your own view that Sludge Wave makes it worth something. Just again, I find it very amusing.

          • M’iau M’iaut

            Okay folks. Both.

          • Guillermo Oliva III

Finding something amusing does not sum up anything that you are trying to prove over our previous conversation. Also, “urged her to get it based off your own view that Sludge Wave makes it worth something” that is amusing to state ,since I did not point a gun or stated my believe of this person to even find the time and worth to do so. Over all, you still trying to make a round-about with this conversation to prove something that does not fit into this strange arguement and already told you to stop and yet you keep on . . . . . . why dont you find something better to do ,then harrassing me and do it to someone else for another of your “amusement”? whatever you say is not going to prove anything worth of your time or mine.

      • Depends if you’re into Doubles or not, otherwise it’s not going to be much, if any, better than Sludge Bomb on a trained (good IV/EV) Poke.

    • Gorezito

I can’t get one since i live in Brazil. You can always get yours and trade with someone else. Like me. ;)

    • PreyMantis

Does it have a Gengarite mega stone?

      • AuraGuyChris

It’s not like you can’t get the stone in the game, and it’s one that’s available before you’re running around the whole place within the next hour in the post game.

      • Eder García

i think not… in Pokemon Y there’s a hex maniac who has the gengarite in laverre city, just talk to her, idk if is in Pokemon X as well
EDIT, yes Gengar has the gengarite

        • Steven Higgins

It is, I have X and Gengarite

  • Do any of these distruibed Pokemon have good IVs?

  • ネオフォトン ~ Neo

I already have a 5IV Gengar, so I don’t think Sludge Wave is really gonna make me budge. Sludge Bomb does the job in singles anyway.

  • Alestaos

What’s the point of the mystery gift and such now when everything is given out to GameStop etc for distribution instead of Nintendo Wifi

    • doubleO7

You still have to use Mystery Gift to get stuff from Gamestop >.>

And coincidentally there is a Wi-Fi Pokemon distribution going on RIGHT NOW, until the end of the month.

    • PreyMantis

As much as I hate exclusive retail store distribution, I still think it’s what keeps rare monsters more rare.

    • AuraGuyChris

Because maybe they want people to buy more games there?

      • Steven Higgins

If that’s their logic, it’s flawed, as going to Gamestop to get an event Pokemon doesn’t mean they won’t buy the game somewhere else.

  • Hakai Ouji Vegeta #BADMAN

Gengar used to be one of my favorites. Now he looks very… wtf is that?

    • Learii

is a Halloween Gengar not normal shiny Gengar

    • doubleO7

      Mega Gengar

  • Based Ignacio Puppo

I dislike how underused “Mystery Gift” is used. Not everyone has access to the “distribution centers”, which is what makes it so disappointing!

Ah well, not like I need a Gengar thanks to GTS, but still…

    • Snorlaxation

I always used Mystery Gift in the Gold/Silver/Crystal days, but yeah, it’s annoying and really disheartening how useless it’s become.

      • Based Ignacio Puppo

Oh, Mystery Gift on Gold/Silver/Crystal was awesome, I’d do it every day with my sister(She had Silver, I had Gold), and getting the dolls was always a treat. That Mystery gift system was awesome.

        • Snorlaxation

Right?! I felt exactly the same. I had Gold and Crystal, and a friend in 5th grade had Silver (and I later got Silver from that friend) and would always make doing the mystery gift a part of my day.

Then you could see the dolls and your room and everything all 3D on pokemon stadium 2

  • FlutterPie

I don’t really care about Gengar that much, but my friend does, so I might as well go and get him too…

  • ZnTxn

For the people living in México, Gameplanet is also doing a digital distribution. Go to their promotion page (http://gameplanet.com/pokemon-sg/) and put your email in the corresponding field. After that, they’ll send you an email (almost immediately for me, not sure how long will it takes to other people) with a personal link to get the code.

Kinda redundant, but not that bad.

  • Yeah no because if I go there they are going to ask me to pre-order the game just to have it

    • gilleh

I’m pretty sure you can just send Nintendo an email detailing the situation and the will send you an email containing a code for it.

      • Syn

If you would be so kinda as to provide said email address I would be ecstatic, cos I have no mean of getting to another continent to get that lovely shiny gengar…unless youre being sarcastic which in that case..*gets ready to cry*

        • gilleh

Not being sarcastic since I had the same situation where they wanted me to pre-order something for the code. They seem to have changed the system for contacting them a bit but http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/ask should be the code to use, keep in mind that the code they provide may only work on the US eshop.

          • Syn

            Thanks a million!

    • Haunter!

Store employees actually can’t do that unless that’s a detailed part of the promotion. If they do, ask to speak to their manager.

    • LuxbeyTheMechromancer

they didn’t ask me or my friend to when we went to get the codes. don’t know if that helps any (especially seven hours after you made this comment) but just thought i’d say something. hell, even if they did, just pre-order, grab the codes and cancel the orders. i’ve done it before.

  • Guillermo Oliva III

It is time to download you~ :b

  • Snorlaxation

I prefer Haunter, but I love Slude wave, so I’m in.

  • Steven Higgins

As a rule I never do GameStop give-aways.

    • ShadowDivz

      …why?
I just walked in, said “are you guys giving away a shiny Gengar”
He said yes and that’s it. Boom. Got a shiny gengar.

  • Kalis Konig

Who thought it was a good idea to distrubute Diancie at Gamestop instead of over Wi-Fi? Well we have a 12th vivillion to look forward to over Wi-fi I guess.

    • I don’t, because *like always* Nintendo forgot that it has players on countries that don’t have gamestop stores :(

      • ehtnah

they don’t forgot, they just don’t care ^^”

have you try to check the number of event with the same kind of distribution (D day in X specific place)? if you want all the pokemon you have to move… to Japan XD or learn to cheat….. what a good moral, be the chosen one, or the cheating one…..

    • Xerain

You sound as if Nintendo doesn’t want Gamestop clerks asking you to preorder, and isn’t going out of their way to help them in do their job of selling more copies of Pokemon.

      • Kalis Konig

Got damn it! How I never realized that is beyond me. The only hope is for people to stop going to these events which will never happen I guess.

  • komiko12

It’s Gamestop exclusive. I’ll never get this unless someone is kind enough to give one to me.

    • ShadowDivz

      You don’t go to gamestop?

      • komiko12

        I live in the Philippines.

  • Vash bane

I guess i’ll try and get one later…wish me luck they don’t ask for pre orders lol >.<

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

in to the box you go…..
