Pokken Tournament Is Being Made To Appeal To Older Pokemon Fans

Pokémon titles have always been made for fans of all ages, but it looks like Pokkén Tournament will be more for the older fans of the franchise, who are now adults. Tekken series chief producer Katsuhiro Harada recently shared more about the game’s target audience in an interview with 4Gamer.

4Gamer notes that the game’s official website mentions that it says that the game is  “not only for children, but for the Pokémon fans who’ve grown up and are in their 20s”. They ask what age demographic the game is aiming for, primarily.

“Naturally, it’s being developed into something that elementary school children can also enjoy, but if we’re talking about age demographics, we’re aiming for something over 18 years of age to the early 30s,” responds Harada.

“When it comes to Pokémon, everyone says they love it up until the fourth grade, and what’s funny is that there are kids who graduate from it after that,” he continues. “Well… it’s not that they ‘graduate,’ since they’re still fans, but they just don’t show [their enthusiasm], and kind of play it more behind-the-scenes.”

Harada points out: “That applies to some of the kids out there. However, for some reason, once they get into their 20s, there are more and more people who enthusiastically share their love for Pokémon.”

“This title is being made as an ‘adult’s Pokémon’ for that generation of people who grew up with Pokémon. Those in their 20s and 30s today have spent a lot of time during their school days with Pokémon, and have some strong memories looking back at the games and anime.”

“And for those people, Pokkén will finally allow them to experience what it’s like to freely move around their favorite Pokémon, and I expect it to be a very impressive title. Please look forward to it.”

Pokkén Tournament will release in 2015 for arcades in Japan.

oooooo…. nice and I am the first to comment! :D

  • Kuhile Brodeur

Kids “stop” playing Pokemon around that age because of other kids making fun of them for liking a children’s game. But once they get near the end of high school, they just stop giving a crap what people think. At least, that’s what happened to me.

    • Ni ~Algidus~

I never bothered with other children. I started liking pokemon when gen 3 hit my country and I was 11-12 years old already

  • KyoyaHibari

It’s just a pubescent pride thing, it’s the same in North America from what I gather, kids will run around talking about Pokemon until around 5th or 6th grade, possibly keep playing it but keep to themselves, then once they reach adulthood, people are more lax at that age and you can be pretty vocal about it.

  • that’s cute

  • Tre W

Well, this isn’t that that much of a shock. Barring the likes of Smash, most fighting games tend to lean more towards an older audience, anyway. So that much just makes sense.

To me, the more interesting take-away from all this? Maybe it’s a hint that their desire for an older crowd might imply that the game’s roster will be comprised more of PKMN from the first three generations than the latter three. “Obvious” later gen choices like Lucario (who’s already been confirmed) aside.

    • Frankie

I really hope so. The newer Pokemon games focus too much on new Pokemon; and I mean the spin-off games. Obviously the new games have to focus on the newer Pokemon.

      • DanijoEX ♬ the Cosmic Owl

It’s been that way since then. But that’s Pokemon for ya.

  • Strawberry Starlet

    Gardevoir bikini DLC confirmed.

    • Kaitsu

      O-oh…

    • subsamuel01

      Busty Jinx also confirmed.

    • Black Heaven

So *that’s* what they mean by ‘adult fans’! hehehe

Can we get a Lopunny there too?

  • I just hope we get more playable Pokemon aside from fanboy favorites Charizard, Mewtwo, Blaziken, etc. and that this isn’t a Wii U release, because I can’t justify buying an entire sysytem for one game…

    • Jiff

Oh yes, just one game. It’s not like they’ve got SSB, Hyrule Warriors, Super Mario 3D Land, Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3, and The wonderful 101 on the WiiU. Nope. Not. At. All.

      • What I meant was: I can’t justifying buying an entire system just for one game because none of the other releases for said system appeal to me personally.
If I decide I want Smash later, I can just get it for the 3DS.

        • Highasthesky

So on what system do you suggest they release it on. The WiiU is the only option at this point.

          • Well, obviously yeah, it’s going to be Wii U I just hope it isn’t exclusive–I wouldn’t mind playing a 3DS version of it.

          • Highasthesky

Neither would i, it would be nice to see a 3DS version of the game. I personally don’t see it happening, but hey, it’d be nice

          • subsamuel01

I don’t ever see this game coming to the 3DS, this game will probably be the Wii U trademark pokemon game if it eventually comes to the console.

        • NeptuniasBeard

Not a single one? Is Pokemon the only type of game you play or something?

          • I play games other than Pokemon, there just aren’t any other series for the Wii U I’m interested in right now.

        • Heisst

Thinking that Smash 3ds is a replacement for the console one that plays on a trusty controller instead of a circlepad-breaking, wrist-hurting, carpal-tunnel-syndrome inducing garbage that is the 3DS control scheme is like thinking that SSF4 on console is replaceable with the 3DS version. Hint: It’s not.

          • s07195

I’m playing fine and comfortably right now, thank you, and I would think others would adjust easily as well. 3DS controls do not replace controller controls, but the mere fact they are offering 3DS as a Wii U Smash control scheme proves that it is not shit, and there are people who would prefer that.

        • HarakiriKami

Except smash is everything the 3DS game is with its own exclusive modes that smash run cant touch.

          Hell its even portable lol!!
Sakurai will show you the “true potential of smash” on Wii U. http://gamerant.com/super-smash-bros-wii-u-definitive-version/

(Also, shame on anybody who hates on Pikmin. Stategy game + charming story master race)

          • Okay, I’m going to just say it: I don’t care enough about Smash.
I really don’t. I get that it’s a classic and I played it through Melee, but I don’t find any appeal in it anymore.
I’m not saying it’s a bad game. I’m not saying it doesn’t deserve the hype. I’m just saying that it isn’t something I will personally go out of my way for.

          • HarakiriKami

That’s alright. But you care about a pokemon fighting game. We arent you so we dont know what kinds of games you like. I just find the one game rhetoric tiresome. It applies to literally every console made. You’d think video game fans would be more enthusiastic rather than cynical and disinterested. Perhaps willing to try new things.

      • Jey

let’s get real, the only thing the Wii U really has going for it is *maybe* the super repetitive mario rehash games, the reshash mario kart games, zelda HD (assuming you dont own an emulator) and hyrule warriors as of now.

In other words, it’s hard to truly want a wii u badly.
in my case im mostly waiting for xenoblade X and maaaybe hyrule warriors eventually.. couldnt care less about other games

        • HarakiriKami

if all you like are the two biggest nintendo franchises in terms of advertising budget then yeah the wii u only has 4 mario and zelda games between them both

Nope certainly not the system that has 564 games to be released on it. Certainly not the system that’s lacking in those big AAA western games that delude people into thinking the PS4 and Xbox One were worth buying already, or that they have a bigger library lol. (I mean come on people. A simple look at wikipedia goes a long way) (Plus every single Wii game is playable on the thing. The Wii has many games people didnt play)

Never mind the fact the console’s turning 2 in a month nope. Platforms usually peak in their 3rd year. Usually the time to buy them.

      • darke

Yes, none of them are pokemon games.

Do you have an issue with people pointing out that there’s almost nothing on a particular system they will enjoy? Because the only thing I’m interested in on the 3DS is the EO series, so you may now mock me for not liking crappy games like SSB.

        • HarakiriKami

Yeah they dont like it because you sound extremely picky. Or you have an encroaching double standard (brand loyalists do this quite often).

All consoles “have no games” until, le gasp, they have games. Really all it requires is a little tiny hint of interest in looking up the systems library and being a fan of video games. One who carries a wide eclectic range of interests.

Its a silly complaint, and a rather annoying one no less. After all its an issue that works itself out over time. Or you’re just a dull person with no joy in their life who owns to many gaming platforms already. Or something like that.

Platform whining is truly grating and annoying. As is port begging. Ha, I used to remember the days when certain loyalists would have meltdowns about PS2 games being multiplats on the 360. (Final fantasy and devil may cry anybody?)

That brings me to my other point. resolution wars is also the dumbest. back in the 90’s two games with the same name on the different platforms could be entirely different games! Now its just insecure fanboys arguing with graphics whores over technological superiority. (Never mind the fact these new systems have weak CPU’s and midtier GPU’s)

When people have those kinds of reactions you’ve know they’ve been following gaming culture on the internet for far too long.

          • darke

Picky? Damn right I’m picky! I have very little time to play games, so I want to play good games, in the best conditions I can.

Can I get a game on the PC instead of the PS4? I’ll get the PC version!

The Vita vs the 3DS? Unless they’re somehow managed to do something magical with the touch pad to make the crap-resolution tolerable, I’ll stick with the Vita thanks.

If that guy’s only interested in pokemon games, why the hell are people saying “but there’s other games, duh!”? He wasn’t even complaining that there was nothing on the WiiU, just that he didn’t want to buy the system for one game.

People need to grow up and realise that not everyone is like them.

          • HarakiriKami

            Okay old man.

But if you’re that pressed for time as an “adult” dont you think you should act like one rather than bitch on the internet?

          • M’iau M’iaut

The discussion can move on folks. Enough round and round

          • HarakiriKami

            Yes Miau.

          • darke

I’m sure, no matter what your situation, I could say you’ve got better things to do then bitch on an internet forum as well.

In any event, I can read forums while waiting for code to compile, or standing in a server room whilst waiting for a machine to power up or the HP/Dell techs to arrive, or while staring at consoles waiting for hard-locked VMs to reboot. There’s lots of downtime working in IT where you can just read a computer/mobile screen or at a computer even if you can’t game.

Or in this instance I’m sitting here typing while my girlfriend is lying asleep in bed beside me. Since games machines are too noisy and have flashing effects on screen, whereas dim monitor screens are perfectly fine not to wake her up.

        • Slayven19

The person also never said he only liked pokemon games so why did you even mention it like he/she did?

ALso you seem to be interested in Monster hunter so EO isn’t the only game you like.

    • Pattonfiend67

I keep thumbing you down, but nothing is happening.

      • I don’t understand why simply disagreeing with my comment fuels such animosity. Did I do anything to you?

        • Pattonfiend67

My comment was just a joke. I am not sure about these other guys, lol.

        • Pattonfiend67

Where in my comment does it show anger and animosity? Lol. It was just a joke, guy.

    • Nightstar1994

Don’t worry, this will be a PS4 and Vita release.

      >_>
      <_<

    • James Robert Thompson

Don’t worry, you don’t have to buy a system for it, you can instead pay air fair to Japan, and spend a few days in Gamecentre on the arcade machines feeding it with yen, instead!

    • Guest

well I kinda agree with you but we all know its going to be wii U because its Nintendo.
(also because I live under a rock apparently and too lazy to see if they released games on any other system lol)

I remember asking a similar question before but they gave that almost exact list jiff gave. thing is not everyone likes those games (what can you say? we’re only human lol)

for me at least the only thing interesting in that list is hyrule warriors and SSB but seeing as im not a online person and bore of games like it quite fast its not worth it same goes for HW.

before we decide on anything shouldn’t we first wait and see how the game is?

    • MasterScrub

So uh… what console would you want this on, exactly? Those sure as hell ain’t 3DS graphics.

  • Eriol

I think Katie Tiedrich expressed the “graduation syndrome” in her webcomic, Awkward Zombie, pretty well:

    • Göran Isacson

Pretty much. Kinda curious what a game aimed at adult fans will look like. Like, I’m certainly not expecting anything like Tekken melodrama with FAMILY CONFLICT AND BETRAYAL AND DEATH or boob physics or anything like that, just kind of curious if they will do anything else except make the mechanics a bit more advanced than you’d expect an elementary schooler to handle.

      • Shippoyasha

I honestly wished they had some prominent male and female trainers featured as well, even though that’ll never happen. Maybe they’ll stand around as Pokemon masters on the background. Well, for those characters, some body physics (boobs or otherwise) would make sense there. I wonder how many effeminate Pokemon there will be as well.

        • Göran Isacson

Eeh, I suppose that could be a thing used for fanservice of the “hey check it out you like this character right” variation, but I don’t see trainers doing anything for the game mechanically. From what I’ve seen so far it looks like they’ll just have the players be trainers directly issuing orders, if they will even feature them at all.

Also, I think they’ll just have fan-favorite Pokemon and if some of those are effeminate, there’s your answer. Don’t think they’re going to go out of their way to include “alluring” Pokemon for that fringe audience.

      • s07195

I like how you just mentioned boob physics as some kind of certain thing. XD

        • Göran Isacson

That is, alas, where my mind goes when I hear “aiming for an older audience” in association with fighting games. Tecmo, man. They’ve put their mark on my generation.

      • Snorlaxation

I don’t have a GIF for it, but does anyone remember Nidoqueen in Pokemon Stadium? Jiggle jiggle

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

Will this mean Mewtwo will be in the game?

    • Likely a Final Boss, hopefully.

  • animefreakhq

So only fighting type Pokemon are going to be available?

    • MadokaXHomura

No its not Fighting type only.

      • animefreakhq

How will other pokemon type be implemented in a fighting game?

        • MadokaXHomura

Well they already said its not going to be Fighting Type only pokemon, and then there’s this
          http://i.imgur.com/rsLgGS7.png
which shows Jynx,Dragonite, and Hawlucha aside from known Lucario,Blaziken,Machamp.

  • Spirit Macardi

Gotta say, it’s really weird seeing Nintendo teaming up with Namco. It’d be like Team Dai-Gurren joining forces with the Anti-Spiral.

    • Norbert Gespenst

TTT 2 on the wii wasn’t the first but hey look at smash.

    • Hero_ZaFakeo

Really? Namco’s co developed plenty of other Nintendo games. Look at the Mario Sports and the arcade Mario Kart.

    • HarakiriKami

You forget that nintendo tried to purchase them before right? Well bandai.

      Then namco ate bandai

  • Go2hell66

If im still playing pokemon when i turn 30 please kill me

    • Don’t me. I’m 30 and I have OR/AS on pre-order.

      • There’s nothing wrong at all at times to be a kid at heart. :) It’s a great way to loosen up after stressful adult priorities in RL.

        • Yea after managing a department in a small business dedicated to computers in general for about 40 hours of numbing a week I don’t mind having something like that relax to.

        • NEVER! EVER! lose your childhood >:) its what makes us gamers immortals

      • ShadowDivz

        No shame?
(see my response to GOLD, before responding)

        • At this point, I’m a grown person who has their own responsibilities – you get to do whatever you want really. Drugs, sex, alcohol, things like that. What’s wrong with Pokemon in its stead?

          …Well, omitting #2 maybe.

Point is it’s not something that detracts from what I am, there’s actually quite a few people that I know in their 20s and 30s that still play it, it’s something that the majority of us grew up with so it’s really nothing that I don’t relate to. But it’s not like I’m going to have conversations with ‘normal people’ about it either; everyone’s going to have different tastes so I don’t necessarily bring it up all the time but I imagine it’s universal for pretty much anything really.

    • Kelohmello

Hey man, if you like what you like it’s fine to enjoy it. What might change is how you do, since as you can see the interview says those same fans still play it, they just do it in a more behind the scenes manner.

    • 古戸ヱリカ

I’ll try, but I have a feeling you’ll just end up fainting.

      • Ciethe

Don’t worry. With your skill set, even if he’s playing dead you’ll kill him to make a point…. ;)

    • GOLD

that’s right! you should stop doing things you like to do!

      • ShadowDivz

Makes perfect sense. You ever talked to the “normies”?
Not a day goes by a “non gamer” doesn’t have any qualms about tearing me a new one because i still play games. (mostly family and friends of family).

Yeah i know, “ignore them. etc”. But at some point, you just get fucking tired of hearing it.

        • GOLD

Yeah it’s stupid. Im an effing adult no one can make me feel bad about how i spend MY time and MY money.

          • ShadowDivz

Tell me about, but there’s just no fixing ignorance.
A cousin tried to tell my other cousin, how dumb he is to spend 59.99$ on games because the companies probably just make them in a weekend.

            *cough* years worth of work

    • Vallen

If I’m still playing Pokemon when I’m 30, please remind me to trade with my kids

  • Mika Moreno

I’ve loved Pokemon since i first got Pearl when i was 7/8, i still love it and i don’t plan on stopping soon!

  • Is Squirtle playable or one of the roster? If so, hope one of his command grab special is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAdGv89e0sE

    • Vash bane

      that’s some bite attack O_O
(I haven’t seen the special that was bite right?)

      • Ahtma

        Yeah, that was bite.

  • SetzerGabbiani

Hmm…30+ and I jumped back on the bandwagon with animated sprites in B/W.

  • Hakai Ouji Vegeta #BADMAN

Every time I see Pokken it’s that same pic.

    • Justin Graham

That’s because there aren’t many pics of it.

  • Vash bane

sounds interesting still wondering about the battle system some.

    • J_Joestar

Was thinking this exact same comic when reading Harada’s comments.
      *looks at Japan*
I guess we aren’t so different after all huh?

    • Vallen

Yup, that’s exactly how it works!

    • ShadowDivz

I actually mentioned this to a friend and he asked me if i read this comic. I didn’t actually, it was just something i noticed about the world.

  • Gemlit

I’m glad that they are making this game tbh. Then, they can take it and use it to make some sort of 2-player Power Stones/Tales hybrid game based on the Pokemon animated series.

  • SpaceCop

Wouldn’t a game directed at adult fans be fairly streamlined? Able to be consumed in bite-sized chunks, and not require multiple-hour training sessions to memorize combos? I mean, adult fans have jobs and stuff, and I frankly don’t have the energy to “git gud” at a new fighting game, least of all a Tekken knock-off.
Not that I have the patience to grind through a new random-encounter turn-based monster-collecting JRPG, either.

    • triablos

It would probably follow “easy to pick up, hard to master” like a lot of other fighters and the pokemon main games

  • Syn

I bet you Pikachu will be OP in this game…mark my words

  • triablos

I’m 17 and I’ve been playing Pokemon since the first. For the first time ever I’m not sure if I’m going to buy this years ORAS even though emerald is one of my favourites. I havent even beat XY yet lol

  • Lightdx Darkcloud

I want to know more about this game but i won’t get my hopes too high….still i hope to see Charizard.

  • SlickRoach

Older Pokémon fans? You mean most Pokémon fans?

  • Vallen

After 20 you simply stop giving a shit. If you like pokemon then so be it, so do millions of other people. Who cares what age you are. You grew up liking it, that means you’ll probably like it for the rest of your life. Limiting yourself from what you enjoy just because of what other people think is stupid. And after 20 you simply give zero f*cks about what others think :)

  • VenerableSage

As an older Pokemon fan, I don’t want an arcade fighter – I want a main series game that actually has some meat-y depth (story) to it and one that comes with difficulty modes right off of the bat.

Ideally, I could do without a happy-go-lucky badgequest too.

    • ShadowDivz

What are you talking about? The pokemon games have an amazing story, about love and friendship.

      Especially black and white 1

  • Γεώργιος Αρχαιοκαπηλίδης

I was in high school when Pokemon first generation came out. Now I am 31 years old and I’m glad that they’re finally making a Pokemon fighting game.
