Pokémon Uranium is a fan-made Pokémon game that has been in the making for six years. The game’s fourth public beta was recently released for PC.
Unlike many other Pokémon fan games, Pokémon Uranium has over 100 entirely new and unofficial Pokémon (often called fakemon) and is set in its own made-up location called the Tandor Region. That’s certainly one way of avoiding most legal issues that The Pokémon Company may see fit to throw at your fan project.
When the game is finished, the Tandor Region will have eight gyms for you to travel to and beat in order to obtain their badges as you work your way to becoming the top of the Elite Championship. The current beta has seven of these gyms and 135 Pokémon to collect and battle in total.
But there’s more to the game’s story than becoming the best Pokémon trainer in the region. The heroes Vitor and Natalie must also deal with corrupted Pokémon that appeared after a nuclear disaster (hence the name Pokémon Uranium) and that threaten to destroy the natural ecosystem.
Pokémon Uranium is being made in RXMP and so it doesn’t require any emulators to work. It has features that let you battle against and trade Pokémon with friends inside the game. You can download it for free for Windows from the links here. There’s also a guide to get it running on Mac computers.
