<< How to read and understand sales

Christmas week in Japan didn’t see much in the way of new releases. Instead, games that are popular with Japanese consumers benefited from the holiday boost, carrying the retail games industry on their shoulders.

The highest-selling game of the week was, of course, Yo-kai Watch 2: Headliner, which is now at 2 million copies sold at retail. Meanwhile, the new Pokémon releases, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, and the two versions of Smash Bros. made up the rest of the top 5.

At #6 was Square Enix’s Final Fantasy Explorers, which has now sold over 200,000 copies. Retail chain Tsutaya says that Final Fantasy Explorers has been facing stock shortages, so the game appears to be doing better than Square Enix expected, despite Japanese consumers voicing concerns about its level of polish.

The top-20 software sales chart for Christmas week can be found below. The top-20 chart for the week after Christmas will be posted tomorrow (January 8th).

At least console sales for Vita, PS4, and Wii U went up.

    • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

But on the flipside, numbers are down Year over Year for all systems [sans PS4 and XBOX One, of course]~.

    • British_Otaku

That seems par of the course and the most unremarkable thing to note on the pre-Christmas week of sales. All consoles should be going up but it is a rare treat to see most systems over selling tens of thousands.

  • SobriK

Animal Crossing: New Leaf at #12? Talk about a long tail – that game’s over two years old in Japan!

It does make sense that it’d sell well for those picking up new 3DSes (or new New 3DSes) which I suspect is the case here – given that Mario Kart 7 just cracked the Top 20 as well.

  • Namuro

Almost there… Mario Kart! You’ll break the million line soon!

  • ronin4life

You guys should also post the overall 2014 sales info for HW and SW.

Spoiler: all the top 10 software are 3ds and WiiU.

Here is a link. Just realized it is Famitsu, so Siliconera may not post it:

  • British_Otaku

Attack on Titan Chain going strong. I hope to see it reach 100K with time in addition to the 300K from the original game, the little touches they made, the Chain missions as well as the online feature (though it needs a bit of work with more communication options) are really nice.

Not surprised that Smash Bros (even Wii U). Monster Hunter, Pokemon and Yokai Watch dominated the charts otherwise.

    • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

NIntendo is more less famous for best sellers in holiday.^_^ It is not shocking after seeing this happen for almost 15 years lol.

  • JeySigma

I dont like how weakly that Vita TV/PS TV is selling.. i hope Sony doesnt abandon it and stop supporting it.
Playing Vita games on the big screen is awesome (Soul sacrifice and ahem, Senran kagura come to mind).. i’d HATE it if later Vita games dont have TV support -_-

and whats up with the japanese and their love for Yokai watch anyway? such a weird obscure title selling like hot cakes.. geezus

    • ZEROthefirst

Home consoles usually sell poorly in Japan, and with the PS/Vita TV not even having full Vita game support, it’s not surprising that it’s selling poorly in Japan.

    • Monterossa

Sony is so dumb. they let Nintendo have all the 3rd party exclusive games. Sony America is even dumber for not helping publishers to localize Japanese games. they tried to promote the Vita as a console-quality device on the go and expect western AAA games to be the main focus, they failed. they should’ve made the Vita a real successor to the PSP, keep focusing on Japanese games because that’s what the handheld fans want. they want to play localized Japanese games, not Borderlands 2 and some other western console games on the go.

      • ronin4life

Nintendo hasn’t gone after every game, but they have helped quite a few. I think they have done very well in that regard, considering Sony/MS Don’t do that at all.

I don’t see how them not doing someone elses job is stupid of them.

      • Lastlight

Huh, I wonder what you say to people that claim “The vita is failing because of no western support”

      • JeySigma

True story, and what a shame..

I own both a 3ds and a vita, but after being done with Pokemon X and SMT4 i completely let my 3ds gather dust. ( i couldnt care less about Smash or Mario #153 rehash either)
While the Vita was in the end a much better gaming device with more worthwhile games.

(2014 was amaaaazing with danganronpa 1+2 and soul sacrifice delta.. these alone should be system sellers in terms of quality)
Just needs more quality softwares in the future.

        • Slayven19

If vita had more worthwhile games it would be selling better. Its a better gaming device but it doesn’t have more worthwhile games, they do have a few good ones though but they are all almost rpgs(With some being rehashes of ps3 games at that)

          • HarakiriKami

Its not a better gaming device really

        • HarakiriKami

So you’re actually not playing the myriad of great 3DS games that are released?

But you’re playing shit like Mind Zero and old games like Daganronpa?

LOL. Someone needs to keep up with current game releases I see

          • JeySigma

Danganronpa 1 and 2 were never officially released in english until last year.. yep, “old” huh.
And no im not playing Mind Zero, maybe you are? since you randomly brought it up

I dont owe you explanations for why i prefer the Vita but stop making baseless assumptions, it makes you sound dumb.

          • HarakiriKami

Your initial post makes you sound dumb.

We all know why you prefer the vita. Its irrelevant when reality is giving you the evil eye for openly making a stupid comment.

    • AkuLord3

Its not really a weird obscure thing. You’ll know when we get it or just look at gameplay

    • decus

The only games that don’t have PS TV support are ones with a lot of touch features that wouldn’t work well as L3/R3 triggered. It’s more of a “we don’t want to sell people something that wouldn’t play well at all” kind of thing, though dunno if a PS4 controller makes it easier.

I don’t really suspect RPGs and hunting games to ever not have PS TV support, if not at launch then added later for the west.

    • Bacon_n_Lettuce

Pokemon was pretty weird and obscure back in the day, and look where we are now.

  • Le sigh, if only it was always a holiday week for home consoles. Even though I feel like there is potential to revitalize home consoles in Japan, it’s not something that would happen within the next gen or two probably (because of the gaming industry and the culture in general).

I am very glad for FFE though! I wonder if it being similar to a portable MMO that does have fun multiplayer is helping sell/carry it? That would be my guess, anyway. Given that’s an important feature in general but especially in Japan, I think that should help carry its negative points.

  • Yan Zhao

Oh my God! Xbox One sold more than 1000 this week!!!!

    • ronin4life

It’s like the Yamcha of Japanese Game HW sales…

  • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

Wuhhhhh FFEX finally breaking that 200k barrier and i had been hearing that while a group of Japanese had been complaining about the game weakness, there are also many that had been praising how the game plays well on its own strength.^_^

    • British_Otaku

I don’t think this reflects strongly on the game yet, we have seen other games with strong brands but shoody/flawed releases sell massive numbers left and right. In Japan and on the 3DS, Dragon Quest X still sold well despite not working for a considerable amount of time.

It should be a quick drop after Christmas while most of these continue to pull out stronger numbers.

      • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

I do see where u are coming here but, FFEX unlike other terrible one is actually decent filled with flaws which can be repaired on the next installment. which is why i see this one a bit different.

Of course, releasing it on Christmas is also a good idea.^_^ As at that period of time, money moves around faster.

  • SetzerGabbiani

Captain Toad is chugging along. Pretty sure Nintendo didn’t expect that kind of resilience…and it was likely cheaper to produce given the MSRP. Sequel announcement incoming :3
