While you may not think of Square Enix and Call of Duty in the same sentence, Square Enix has publishing Call of Duty games in Japan since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Activison and Square Enix’s partnership extended to bring over Blur, Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark and Skylanders: Spryo’s Adventure.
This year, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia is handling Call of Duty: Black Ops III. The Japanese version will include an option for dubbed Japanese voices and subtitles on one disc. This is different from Square Enix’s Call of Duty releases which are sold as two different versions, subtitled and dubbed.
Another change since SCEJA is publishing Call of Duty: Black Ops III means this title will not be released for Xbox One or Xbox 360. Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia also published Destiny which made Bungie’s game a PlayStation exclusive in the region.
Call of Duty: Black Ops III comes out on November 6 for PlayStation 4 in Japan. A PS3 version will also be released at a later date.
Update: Call of Duty: Black Ops III will not be a PlayStation exclusive in Japan. Microsoft announced the game will be available for Xbox One in Japan with Activision handling the publishing duties and Microsoft Japan as the distributor.
