The Effects Of Teaming Up In MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies Aren’t Always Exciting

Recommended Videos

MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies is all about pairing characters up in the single player campaign. It is a successor to Hyperdimension Neptunia U, where two characters can be paired and build up a Lily Rank relationship as you play. Here, the dynamics and results are a bit different when characters team up.

Let’s go ahead and start with the Lily Rank system. It’s present in MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies and increases as two characters fight together in the story mode’s Acts. The highest rank that can be reached is 10. As far as I can tell, it only increases the damage done when a duo performs a Lily Special. Which is absolutely a positive influence. Especially if you have a specific duo you like. My favorites are Tamsoft and Nepgear and Uni with either Noire or Famitsu. Having that extra bonus really helps out in a battle, especially against a boss. Plus, trophy hunters will be pleased to know a Lily Lover trophy is awarded the first time you max out one of these bonds.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t special conversations that arise after specifically sending a certain pair to work together. The unique text borne from such conversations happens during the pre-battle event scenes. While characters like Blanc and Neptune appear in every scene, select pairings can show up for unique dialogue. There’s always a generic duo for each segment. Let’s use the Scene 5, Act 1 dialogue as an example. Blanc and Neptune will always fill the roles of Heroine and Hero for the section and Vert and Famitsu will appear as the Heroine’s generic seniors. However, when I swapped in Noire and Dengekiko as replacements, they had unique dialogue.

Unfortunately, MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies’ character-specific lines aren’t all that special. They’re slight alterations, rather than unique dialogue influenced by that character’s personality or quirks. As an example, the text in the two screenshots below are from the aforementioned Scene 5, Act 1. The script for Vert is nearly identical to that for Dengekiko. The pairs serve the exact same role. The Scene 3, Act 3 event is the same. If Nepgear and Dengekiko are paired, they’ll act as zombies, Dengekiko will ask Nepgear for bolts, and Nepgear will tell her she’s not supposed to be Dr. Frankenstein’s monster. Pairing Tamsoft and Famitsu will have Tamsoft saying she doesn’t want to be hit by a silver bullet, followed by Famitsu reminding her they’re supposed to be zombies, not werewolves. It’s disappointing, because you’d expect something special from figuring out what pairing would give you a different event.

There’s also Backstage Talk, which is the most satisfying of the extra events. From what I’ve seen, this tends to unlock after pairing up certain characters for certain stages. As an example, I had Blanc and Nepgear enjoy some quality time together after I used both of them against the Scene 4, Act 5 boss, and then Vert and Noire had a chat after I made them team up for Scene 5, Act 5. The Backstage Talk events take place outside of the main storyline and essentially exist to encourage repeat replays of the same levels.

The funny thing is, there’s a Backstage Talk quirk. Both of the ones I’ve managed to see have the characters speaking in Japanese, even though I have the English language options enabled. At first, I found it a bit jarring. After all, the rest of the game does have English voice acting. This exemption felt a bit odd. But now, I almost find it charming. It makes these Backstage Talks feel more like a genuine omake segment. Besides, the fact that you’re getting a cute skit and a special CG image goes a long way toward making these events more substantial and valuable.

The relationship elements and pairings in MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies are anticlimactic. You’d expect something special for getting a Lily Rank up to level 10, even though it doesn’t take too much grinding to reach that rank. You’d think a script would have completely different dialogue when a specific duo was set for a level, rather than lines that are only slightly different from the original text. The Backstage Talk sections are probably the best reward for pairing up certain characters. It’s disappointing that there isn’t more to enjoy, especially since previous games have done such a good job with character interactions and banter.
