Valkyria Chronicles Remastered Is A Good Opportunity To Revisit The DLC

Recommended Videos

The main reason to play Valkyria Chronicles Remastered is to play Valkyria Chronicles again. It’s an incredible strategy game that’s held up remarkably well, both visually and in terms of gameplay. It’s a fantastic game. Getting to earn trophies for it for the first time is a pretty big deal too. The PlayStation 3 version didn’t have that option and there’s something satisfying about earning those 21 bronze, silver, gold, and platinum trophies. But, it’s also a good opportunity to play the DLC, since they were sold separately with the PlayStation 3 release.

The Valkyria Chronicles Remastered DLC walks a fine line between fanservice and providing an actual challenge to anyone who attempts them. They’re a means of singling out characters who didn’t get as much face time within the main game, as well as offering some more challenging missions and rewards. As such, they can be a bit divisive. If someone doesn’t care for Selvaria or Edy and her detachment, they’re probably not going to have a good time with Behind Her Blue Flame, Edy’s Mission: Enter the Edy Detachment, or Challenges of the Edy Detachment. If you do like those characters or want some extra weapons, then you’ll get something out of it.

I recommend starting with Behind Her Blue Flame, mainly because Selvaria is an interesting character, this campaign offers branching battles and a bonus mission, and Ruhm. It’s available under Extras as its own, separate campaign. It’s also quite challenging. People begin with Selvaria, Johann and other, basic units in Assault on Ghirlandaio. Depending on what you accomplish in this battle you unlock one of two follow-up missions. Do what you’re told to head to Rout of the Gallian Forces or destroy the tank along the way to trigger Silencing the Artillery. (I find Rout of the Gallian Forces to be the easier of the two, though they’re both difficult.) Completing the first mission and one of the two second ones will unlock Ruhm, Selvaria’s submachine gun. It has aim equivalent to a sniper rifle, incredible range and massive power. It’s perfect for your favorite Shocktrooper, like Lynn.

Selvaria’s missions in Valkyria Chronicles Remastered are also great, because they gives you something to shoot for. If you’re able to get an A rank or higher in all three, you unlock Covert Op Azure Witch. It’s your one opportunity to play as Selvaria in her valkyria form. I also find it much easier than the previous missions in this campaign.

All of the Selvaria missions are much easier than the other self-contained story. Edy’s Mission: Enter the Edy Detachment is hard. You know the Nintendo hard saying? It’s worse than that. Back when Valkyria Chronicles was first released, I only beat this mission once, and I feel like it only happened because I got lucky. (To be fair, I didn’t attempt it too many times, as I’m not a fan of Edy.) It’s a test of wills. You first have to hold the enemy back for three turns, as more constantly show up, then get Edy to a specific spot on the map while also keeping Imperials out of the space you were protecting before 20 turns pass. You aren’t even rewarded for your efforts with equipment, though there are four possible ending scenes. (I’ve only seen the C and D ranks. You don’t want to get the D rank ending.)

The Challenges of the Edy Detachment, on the other hand, are much better. These are basically additional skirmishes, and they’re available during the main storyline. You get six fights, Susie’s Challenge: The Wildwood I, Jann’s Challenge: Naggiar Plains North, Marina’s Challenge: The Wildwood II, Homer’s Challenge: The Warehouse District, Edy’s Challenge: The Arboreal Wastes, and The Edy Detatchment Challenge: Barious Ruins. Each one is fairly difficult and designed with the character issuing the challenge’s class in mind. So Marina’s map would have some situations where a sniper is ideal, Jann’s would need at least one lancer, and so on. Their difficulty varies, and each one is a fantastic means of earning experience and DCT and farming weapons. You can get weapons like the scout’s ZM Kar 8 and 9 and sniper’s ZM SG 5 and 7.

Now that we get to play Valkyria Chronicles on a console again, it’s best to make the most of it. Savor the extra experiences offered by the DLC campaigns and challenge missions. You’ll get to enjoy unexpected missions with one character, tackle one of the game’s most difficult missions, and test yourself while earning extra rewards in the process. It’s all about getting more of one of the best strategy games out there.

Valkyria Chronicles Remastered is immediately available for the PlayStation 4.
