Three Street Fighter Games Join The New Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console

The fight is being brought to the New Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console this week in North America. Three Street Fighter games are now available on the handheld, with two variations of Street Fighter II and Street Fighter Alpha 2. The Nintendo Wii U, on the other hand, gets a version of Super Mario 64, as Super Mario 64 DS has been released on the console.

While Street Fighter Alpha 2 is the most recent of the three Street Fighter games coming to the New Nintendo 3DS this week, it’s actually a prequel to Street Fighter II. It originally appeared in arcades in 1996, before heading to the Super Nintendo, Sega Saturn, and PlayStation later that year. The Virtual Console release is the Super Nintendo port. Adon, Akuma, Birdie, Chun-Li, Dan, Dhalsim, Gen, Guy, Ken, M. Bison, Nash, Rolento, Rose, Ryu, Sagat, Sakura, Sodom, and Zangief are all playable characters. It’s known for its Alpha Counters, Custom Combo System, and Quick Move Reversals. It’s $7.99 on the Nintendo 3DS eShop.

Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting comes next and is the third Street Fighter II game. It was originally released in arcades in 1992, followed by a Super Nintendo release in 1993. This entry plays at a faster speed than the previous two Street Fighter IIs, with players able to pick from four different speed settings in Turbo mode. It brought back the barrel-breaking minigame, and every character, except for Balrog, Guile, M. Bison, Sagat, and Vega, received a new moves. This entry’s playable characters are Balrog, Blanka, Chun-Li, Dhalsim, E. Honda, Guile, Ken, M. Bison, Ryu, Sagat, Vega, and Zangief. It’s $7.99 on the Nintendo 3DS eShop.

Street Fighter II: The New Challengers is the fourth Street Fighter II game. It appeared in arcades in 1993, before coming to the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis in 1994. It was Capcom’s first CP System II hardware game, allowing it to look and sound much better than the previous year’s Street Fighter II. While it took away Street Fighter II Turbo’s faster setting, it added a new scoring system, additional characters, and the Group Battle, Time Challenge, and Tournament modes. Balrog, Blanka, Cammy, Chun-Lee, Dee Jay, Dhalsim, E. Honda, Fei-Long, Guile, Ken, M. Bison, Ryu, Sagat, T. Hawk, Vega, and Zangief are all playable in this installment. It’s $7.99 on the Nintendo 3DS eShop.

Finally, we have Super Mario 64 DS, a remake of Super Mario 64. It was a Nintendo DS launch title, released back in 2004. Bowser has been captured by Princess Peach, and it’s up to Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Wario to save her. Each character has his own special abilities, with players beginning with Yoshi and unlocking the other three. Players have to enter paintings in Peach’s castle to collect stars and work toward rescuing all four captured characters. The DS version had minigames for all four characters, as well as a multiplayer VS mode. It’s $9.99 on the Nintendo Wii U eShop.
