Pokémon Sun & Moon Devs Discuss The Designs Of The Alolan Forms

Recommended Videos

Ever since the reveal of Pokémon Sun & Moon’s Alolan forms, fans have seen many of their favorite Pokémon get brand-new spins on their designs. Game Freak’s Junichi Masuda, Sun & Moon’s producer, and Shigeru Ohmori, the game’s director, recently spoke with Kotaku about the designs of the Pokémon and characters in the upcoming 3DS game.

For example, when asked which Pokémon the team had the most fun designing, Ohmori mentioned Alolan Exeggutor, and went on to explain just why the creature had changed so drastically. “When the designers first came up with the idea, the background is that the sun in Alola is so strong, that [Exeggutor] just keeps growing and growing.”

However, when asked if some of the new designs were at all meant as jokes or to mess with people, the developers laughed, saying that it was “important to have some fun with the designs because it was a special occasion.” Ohmori went on to explain further, saying “For the 20th anniversary, we wanted to have a lot of special surprises…we wanted a funny element. At the same time, we had to find a balance of cool ones, serious ones. We looked at the Alola region as a whole and thought about that ecosystem.”

Next, the subject of certain character designs was brought up, with the focus on Professor Kukui and his obvious lack of a shirt. As to why this newest Pokémon Professor seems so underdressed considering he’s a scientist, Junichi Masuda explained that the reason behind it is the Alolan region’s warmer weather.

Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon will release for the Nintendo 3DS on November 18th worldwide and November 23rd in Europe.
