Conquering Pokémon Sun’s Post-Game

Recommended Videos

As is common with a Pokémon game, the end isn’t the end in Pokémon Sun and Moon. There’s still more for you to do. The breeding and battling elements are obvious, especially if you’ve already been lurking around the Battle Royal Dome. So is accumulating Heart Scales from meals for the move tutor on Ula’ula Island and using the QR Scanner now that you have access to all areas. You might even want to try collecting all the Zygarde Cells and Cores, and perhaps even the six extra Battle Style poses for fighting certain captains again and reaching specific accomplishments at the Battle Royale or Battle Tree. Catching the four Tapus at each of their ruins is a must. But, there are few other important things to do now that you’re a champion.

Note: spoilers for Pokémon Sun and Moon are ahead!

First, you’ll want to collect what I call the “gimmes.” Once you’ve beaten Pokémon Sun and Moon, you can visit two spots to get a rare or legendary Pokémon. Stopping by Aether Corporation to see Gladion will net you a Type: Null. Leveling it up with full friendship will make it become Silvally, which you’ll definitely want for the Multi Attack move that works with the different memories you get from Aether. After visiting Gladion, pop Solgaleo or Lunala into your party and head to Poni Island’s Altar of the Sunne or Moone. You’ll be able to go into a parallel world, where the time is 12 hours ahead. While this is a good place to get time-sensitive Pokémon, you’ll mainly want to go here to visit Ula’ula Island’s Lake of the Moone or Sunne. Once you get there, Cosmog will be waiting. You can then level it up to Cosmoem, then perhaps trade with someone who has the opposite copy to get the legendary you don’t have.

From there, I recommend going on the Ultra Beast side quest. Looker recruits you to help his team capture the UBs that came to Alola after Lusamine’s machinations. What follows is a quest that sends you to each of the islands to catch multiple UBs, with 10 Beast Balls given to you between missions. You’ll be constantly tested with battles against trainers like Anabel, Looker’s partner, Mina, and Nanu. Anabel will kick things off, with a level 61 Alakazam, Mismagius, Salamance, Snorlax, and Weavile at the route 8 motel on Akala. After defeating her, you’ll get sent to catch a level 55 Nihilego (UB-01) at either Wela Volcano Park or the Diglett’s Tunnel. I found mine at the volcano, but it will spawn in either location. After reporting in, then regrouping at the Route 2 Melemele motel, you’ll go after the next UB. The next UB-02, which is level 65 Buzzwole in Pokémon Sun,  lurks in Melemele Island’s Melemele Meadow. You have to catch two to continue. In Pokémon Moon, it’s 4 Pheromosas at Verdant Cavern.

Once that’s done, you need to go to the motel on Akala’s route 8 again. Mina
challenges you with a level 61 Granbull, Klefki, Ribombee, Shiinotic, and Wigglytuff.
Both games send you after two level 65 Xurkitrees next. They’re on Akala Island. You can find them in the Lush Jungle and Memorial Hill. After that, you have to go to Ula’Ula’s route 13 motel. Again, the game diverges. Pokémon Sun players are sent to Malie Garden or Route 17 for four UB-04 Kartanas at level 65, while Pokémon Moon folks go to Haina Desert or Malie Garden for two level 65 Celesteelas. Going to Poni Island’s floating restaurant after that will send you after Glutton, UB-05. Nanu will challenge you first, with his level 63 Absol, Honchkrow, Krookodile, Persian, and Sableye. From there, you need to go to the Resolution Cave, which is past Poni Meadow. In the basement room of the cave, a level 70 Guzzlord will spawn. Your reward will be $1,000,000 in-game dollars, as well as a tip to head to Melemele Island’s route 2 motel again.

Once you go there, Looker will point you to the last legendary. Necrozma has been sighted on Melemele. If you head to Ten Carat Hill’s Farthest Hollow, there’s a chance of him appearing. Putting a Pokémon that isn’t too far away from level 75, his level, and using a Max Repel will make it easier to get him. I used a Master Ball on him, to be sure I caught him, but as long as you use regular Poke Balls of some sort, you should be fine.

After all that’s done, it’s a good time to start up with Mega Evolutions and enjoy the Battle Tree. Before you can start taking part in the battles there and earning items, you’ll have two major fights. The first is one you’ll have to deal with if you did the UB sidequest first and gets you access to the Mega Evolution ability. Sina and Dexio will appear again before you can head to the western side of Poni, forcing you into a fight against a level 61 Alakazam, Espeon, Metagross, Raichu, and Slowking. Alakazam will Mega Evolve, so prepare for that. Once gone through these next few areas, which are filled with pretty strong trainers and Pokémon, you’ll come across Red or Blue. You’re then given a choice who you can fight. Red starts with a level 70 Pikachu, of course, before also bringing out a level 66 Blastoise, level 66 Charizard, level 65 Lapras, level 65 Snorlax, and level 66 Venusaur. Blue, on the other hand, has a level 65 Aerodactyl, Alakazam, Arcanine, Exeggutor, Gyarados, and Machamp. Even though it was a little more difficult, I went for the fight against Red. Either way, you get $18,200 and access to the Battle Tree and its Single, Double, and Multi Battles.

Really, there’s a lot to do even when it seems like you’re done in Pokémon Sun and Moon. The UB segment acts as a nice little epilogue. The extra legendaries are a fun reward for your efforts. Also, getting to see all those familiar faces both on the way to and at the Battle Tree is quite a lot of fun. Putting all the effort in offers all sorts of rewards.
