Stormblood

Last week, Japan had a big week in sales with new entries including Final Fantasy XIV’s Stormblood expansion, The Alliance Alive, Farpoint, God Wars: Future Past, and a new milestone for the Switch. Japanese sales tracker Media Create shares a look at software and hardware sales data from the week of June 19 through June 25, 2017.

#1 of the week goes to ARMS, which impressively managed to keep the top spot with all the new entries this week with 28,748 units sold on Nintendo Switch

Following shortly behind is Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood at 28,731 units sold on PlayStation 4. When the previous expansion, Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward, released in June 2015, it sold 47,487 copies (38,758 on PS4 and 8,729 on PS3). Keep in mind that it doesn’t include digital sales which had plenty of incentive for the expansion and there’s no extra PS3 version this time around. Final Fantasy XIV also had a “Complete Pack” edition with the other expansions which placed #11 with 4,030 units. Added together, we can say that Stormblood debuted with 32,761 copies sold on PS4.

At #3 we have FuRyu’s 3DS RPG The Alliance Alive at 26,421 units sold. While it’s a pretty big drop from the company’s previous title The Legend of Legacy that saw 53,974 copies sold in its debut in January 2015, it still out-performed most of the publisher’s other titles in recent years:

  • (2011) Unchained Blades [PSP] – 18,256
  • (2011) Unchained Blades [3DS] – 5,592
  • (2011) Tsuku Monogatari [PSP] – 13,329
  • (2012) Unchained Blades Exxiv [PSP] – 6,793
  • (2012) Unchained Blades Exxiv [3DS] – 6,645
  • (2014) Lost Dimension [PSV] – 3,868
  • (2015) The Legend of Legacy [3DS] – 53,974
  • (2016) Caligula [PSV] – 31,243

Next at #4 we have Impulse Gear’s VR Space adventure game on PS4, Farpoint, with 17,100 units sold in its Japanese debut. Kadokawa Games’ RPG based on Japanese folklore, God Wars: Future Past, sold merely 10,330 copies between its two versions (5,291 units sold on PS Vita and 5,039 on PS4). Considering the publishers announced that the game has surpassed 100,000 in worldwide sales, we can’t call it a flop, but it certainly found its bigger share of audience outside of Japan. Let’s not forget that it’s a new IP and also a tactical RPG, which tend to come with lower numbers in general.

And finally, LocoRoco Remastered launched in Japan and it charted at #20 with 2,161 units sold, a bit on the lower end of things.

On the hardware front we saw a slight increase in PlayStation console sales. The Nintendo Switch went back to normal numbers after last week’s ARMS launch. The console sold 22,361 units which helped it pass the million-seller mark in Japan with 1,013,019 units sold going by Media Create’s numbers.
