Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus’ Co-op Mode Is Quite A Cool Challenge

Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus adds a special feature to the Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 formula. When the game came to the Nintendo Switch, Bandai Namco decided to take advantage of the system coming with two Joy-Cons. Two people can go through mazes together, handling the ghosts and collecting pellets together for the greater good and the highest scores. It is something that works quite well if both players are at a similar skill level and if each has a different amount of experience.

Here is how Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus works. When you choose the cooperative element, you can play alone or with a friend, going through a tutorial or Score Attack. There are six courses under Score Attack: Championship+2P, Jumping+2P, Mountain+2P, Original CE+2P and a Boss Rush that must be unlocked. Each one is similar to the solo options, just two Pac-Man characters are on the field. To wipe out the major ghosts, you must sandwich them between both characters.

There is a beauty in this system. If the two people are at the same skill level, it is a great way to work in tandem and handle the waves of ghosts together. One tactic is to have one player handle the ghost train, while the other gets all the pellets. Another is to try and have a nearly choreographed routine that has each Pac-Man taking the most efficient course through their half of the maze, leading ghosts on, before meeting in the middle to head to the next phase and eventually get closer to devouring ghosts and beating bosses. There are even multiple difficulty options.

This means it also works when people are at different skill levels. Going with the Normal difficulty level means things will be more manageable. If someone is just getting started, they can watch what the other player is doing and mimic their movements on their side of the screen. The person who is stronger can carry the other a bit as well. Yes, things can fall apart if they are completely unbalanced, but this can make for a situation where one can learn and grow while having a second player acting as a safety net.

What’s especially nice is that there is a single player option with Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus. In the event that you do not have someone near by to play with you, it does have an option to have an AI ally join you. And in some respects, this computer comrade is not totally lacking. It is very competent when it comes to chowing down on pellets. When it comes to sandwiching ghosts between the two Pac-Man characters, it is not as wise. It tends to get one ghost in front of it, then push it in a loop until you get yourself in the correct position. And for the boss battles, the character controlled by a human is the one who handles all the heavy lifting.

But what really matters is that the AI is competent enough to at least let you try out and get a decent score in these cooperative challenges. That way, when you do find an actual ally, you will have a much easier time of putting together high scores. It is almost like the solo segment is an opportunity to train and prepare, while actual multiplayer is more about doing your best and really working together.

Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus’ co-op mode is quite an addition. This is a really fun way to play. Especially if you have two people who know how to really play Pac-Man and have experience with the Pac-Man Championship Edition series. Even the co-op single player option is fun, as it can help you train so you are in a better place to work well with a real person It is a genuinely neat and welcome option.
