Nintendo President Confident In Hitting Switch Software Goal, Not So Much For Hardware

Since the release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, we’ve seen plenty of Nintendo Switch consoles flying off the shelves this holiday season, but Nintendo CEO Shuntaro Furukawa had more to say on that with Kyoto Shimbun.

Nintendo Switch software have been selling well, and Furukawa expressed his confidence in hitting the 100 million software sales goal for the fiscal year ending March 2019.

As we head to the end of the year, in October there was Super Mario Party then in November and December we had new entries from the popular Pokémon and Super Smash Bros. series. According to the report, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has sold over five million units within a week in domestic and overseas sales, including digital to make it the company’s fastest-selling record.

After having sold over 42 million software from April through September 2018, Nintendo released several big titles on time for the end of the year when there’s piles of demand.

The new games have been doing well and the Nintendo Switch hardware sales have expanded in its second year; however, when asked about the company’s goal of hitting 20 million Switch console sales for this fiscal year, president Shuntaro Furukawa said “It’s not an easy goal, so we’ll see how things go at the start of the year.”

As previously reported, Nintendo is targeting to reach 20 million units of Switch sales for the current fiscal year (ending March 2019). About 1.88 million Switch consoles sold in the first quarter, followed by 3.19 million in the second for a total of 5.07 million units in the first half.

With only about a quarter of their objective met at the halfway point Nintendo is going to need huge third-quarter for a realistic shot at the 20 million goal, so it’ll be interesting to see how things are looking in the upcoming quarterly report.

The Nintendo Switch launched in March 3, 2017.
