So we’ve skipped ahead in Hiiro no Kakera DS, since for a while the game just has some tension building conversations and interactions. In our last entry, the members of Logos easily triumphed over the five demon fighting guardians Takuma, Mahiro, Yuuichi, Tsuguru and Shinji, and then took off. Since then, the five guys and Tamaki have had a number of discussions about dealing with Logos and the monster appearances.

When we last left poor princess descendent Tamaki in Hiiro no Kakera DS, she had run into (literally) Shinji, the fifth of the six guardians who will assist her in sealing the demon sword. She also discovered that her unusually adorable fox Foxie was more than just a supernaturally cute pet - that he had special abilities of his own and wouldn’t hesitate to use them to defend her.

When we last left off in Hiiro no Kakera DS, Tamaki had learned her destiny, met four of the six bachelors who will protect her and made friends with a strange, white, two-tailed fox with blue markings. Now Tamaki is ready to start taking the long road to sealing off the demon blade.

Hiiro no Kakera starts with quite a bit of exposition. It begins with a detailed explanation of why our heroine, Tamaki, is suddenly living with her grandmother in a rural mountain town. (Her parents decided to focus on their careers and ditch her.)

Since kanji is abundant Hiiro no Kakera, the latest DS dating sim for girls’, it may be difficult for those with mediocre Japanese reading skills to get to know the eligible bachelors. So hopefully this short primer will help players get to know the men looking to win Tamaki’s heart.

Since most of the main menu in Hiiro no Kakera is in kanji (like much of the actual game), figuring out what each button does can be a bit confusing. Especially since one option in the options menu can erase data. So after watching the beautiful introduction movie and tapping the introduction button (and being greated with a happy “Ohayo!”), a menu with six options comes up.

Hiiro no Kakera DS is the latest visual novel/life sim/otome game for the Nintendo DS. Like other recent titles (Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side 2nd Season and Vitamin X Evolution) it is a port of a PS2 game with DS exclusive features and full voice acting.
